Involuntary school absenteeism is a complex issue in Norwegian education and can be difficult to grasp. It affects not only the students, but also their family and the school environment. This master's thesis aims to investigate the characteristics of research on students’ involuntary school absenteeism, as well as the strategies and interventions that are highlighted as effective. The study is conducted using a systematic review methodology and is theoretically grounded in Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological model.
The findings show that involuntary school absenteeism is often linked to multiple social, academic, and relational challenges for students. A lack of academic adaptation contributes to low self-efficacy and a sense of failure in the school context. The school's ability to collaborate with all parents varies, and certain parent groups are at risk of being excluded from the school community. This makes collaboration around support and adaptation for the student difficult, and students whose parents have had negative experiences with school are considered particularly vulnerable. A sense of belonging is highlighted as a key factor for the students. Students who experience low academic mastery and a weak sense of belonging are especially at risk. The school's ability to build safe relationships and facilitate student participation is essential for both prevention and reintegration.
Some differences are identified between international and national research. International studies place greater emphasis on the student’s voice and tend to suggest more individually targeted interventions, such as cognitive behavioral therapy. In contrast, Norwegian research focuses more on system-level adaptation, safety, and inclusive learning environments. A consistent finding is the lack of student perspectives in Norwegian research, which appears to be a significant gap in knowledge.
Research highlights that vulnerable students are often identified too late, suggesting a need for earlier support as a preventive measure, as well as for stronger collaboration between school and home. The school plays a central role in shaping students' social and relational development, where belonging and recognition are seen as protective factors. The thesis emphasizes a systemic view of the challenges surrounding the student, as illustrated through the application of Bronfenbrenner’s model. It underscores how student absenteeism can be understood through the dynamic interaction between the student and their environment—across the micro-, meso-, exo-, and macrosystems
Abstract: The Place of Outdoor Education in the Core Curriculum
This master's thesis is about what outdoor education is and what traces of outdoor education can be found in the Core Curriculum of the LK20. The background for the thesis includes, among other things, The parliamentary notice No. 34, "A More Practical School - Better Learning, Motivation, and Well-being in Grades 5-10". This notice discusses how those of us working in schools must contribute to a more practical school day for students to improve motivation, well-being, and learning. Outdoor education is also relevant through a research project led by "Nature as a Learning Arena."
The aim of the thesis is to uncover traces of outdoor education or outdoor education pedagogy, even if it is not explicitly mentioned in the Core Curriculum. I have worked from this research question: "What characterizes outdoor education pedagogy, and what traces of selected characteristics of outdoor education can be found in the Core Curriculum of the LK20?" To answer this research question, I have described outdoor education as it is presented in the academic literature and previous research. The thesis is a document analysis of the Core Curriculum. Jordet's model with 8 characteristics of outdoor education is used both as theory and as an analytical framework. The Core Curriculum is analyzed according to characteristics 4, 7, and 8 in Jordet's model. The findings of the study are analyzed, interpreted, and discussed in relation to relevant theory in the knowledge base. The study shows that outdoor education has a significant place in the Core Curriculum of the LK20, and the use of outdoor education can be justified through several areas in the Core Curriculum. Outdoor education can be used to work with adapted education, recognition, and as part of a varied school day with practical tasks in varied learning environments
Farmers’ preferences for the next generation of maize hybrids: application of product concept testing in Kenya and Uganda
Step-change innovation in seed product design by public sector crop breeding has led to major contributions to global food security. The literature, however, provides few insights on how to identify forward-looking innovation opportunities. Inspired by discussions in the product innovation literature, this article describes our application of product concept testing in the context of hybrid maize in Uganda and Kenya. We identified the following eight maize seed product concepts based on interactions with seed companies, crop breeders, and farmers: ‘Resilience’, ‘Drought escape’, ‘Food and fodder’, ‘Home use’, ‘Green maize’, ‘Livestock feed’, ‘Intercropping’, and ‘Family nutrition’. These were described and presented to 2400 farmers using videos, where each farmer saw three concept-presentation videos. Farmers were most likely to have selected the resilience (Kenya and Uganda), drought escape (Uganda), and intercropping (Kenya) concepts. Farmers showed mixed interest in other concepts, such as home use and food and fodder, suggesting that investments in product production and promotion would be required in addition to investments in breeding. These results provide new entry points for conversations among transdisciplinary teams at regional and national levels on the current and future opportunities for crop breeding to respond to farmers’ requirements for new seed products.publishedVersio
This study investigates key factors that contribute to establishing and maintaining effective collaboration between special educators and parents of pupils requiring individually adapted instruction, as seen from the perspective of the special educators. The study is based on a hermeneutic framework and draws on qualitative data from five semi-structured interviews. Guided by two research questions addressing communication practices and interpersonal elements, the study explores how special educators perceive the development and maintenance of constructive school–home partnerships.
The findings indicate that special educators emphasize the early establishment of shared goals and consider early and clear communication crucial for fostering predictability and trust. Openness and honesty are highlighted as central values, with “playing with open cards” described as a strategy for building transparent and trusting relationships with parents. A continuous, two-way flow of information—where parents feel listened to and actively involved in their child’s educational process—is seen as a key component of successful collaboration.
Special educators’ reflection on their own communication style, body language, and presence also emerges as important. The findings suggest that awareness of one’s role and professional responsibility can strengthen school–home relations. At the same time, structural factors such as time constraints, limited resources, and organizational conditions may hinder their ability to engage with parents as desired. The study further highlights the significance of interpersonal factors such as recognition, willingness to listen and understand, and meaningful parental involvement. Recognition is seen not only as listening, but as valuing parents’ insights as a vital resource in supporting the pupil’s development. Active listening, respect for parents’ perspectives, and genuine participation in decision-making processes are regarded as essential for inclusive collaboration.
In summary, the study indicates that special educators’ ability to adapt communication, emphasize interpersonal elements such as recognition, and involve parents meaningfully are key to fostering effective collaboration. The findings also point to the need for supportive organizational structures that allow time, flexibility, and space for professional reflection—suggesting that both individual competence development and structural measures are necessary to support sustainable partnerships in special education
Drivers of regeneration in subalpine Scots pine stands: The role of partial harvest and environmental factors
Subalpine Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) forests play an important ecological and economic role in Norway, their management poses unique challenges due to harsh climatic conditions and slow tree growth. This study examines natural regeneration of Scots pine in subalpine stands managed with continuous cover forestry, focusing on the effects of elevation, stand density, site index, and vegetation type. Data from harvested stands in Innlandet county were analyzed to investigate regeneration establishment in three size classes. The results show that increasing elevation negatively affects seedling establishment and survivability, likely due to lower temperatures, shorter growing seasons, and reduced nutrient cycling. Higher tree density and basal area also reduced regeneration, highlighting Scots pine’s sensitivity to both shade and root competition. Site index showed a marginal significant effect on seedling regeneration, potentially reflecting underlying nutrient availability. Vegetation type had no significant impact, though some trends were observed. The study highlights some of the complexities of managing subalpine Scots pine forests with continuous cover forestry
This study explores the perspectives on early intervention as articulated in key Norwegian policy documents. The research question of the study is: What perspectives on early intervention underpin Education Act, the general part of LK20 and three selected White Papers? The research question directs attention to how early intervention is framed both as a pedagogical principle and as a political strategy, and how it is linked to motivation, well-being and mental health.
Through a thematic document analysis of selected sources and policy documents, the study identifies terminology and directives that reveal both alignments and tensions between educational policy objectives and pedagogical practice. Particular attention is given to how the concepts of motivation, well-being and mental health function both as goals and as means within the framework of early intervention. The study is grounded in relevant theoretical perspectives and empirical research.
The findings indicate a clear policy intention to promote early intervention as a holistic and inclusive practice. Furthermore, the analysis identifies four distinct areas of tension that characterize the policy discourse on early intervention, which serve as an analytical framework for the subsequent critical discussion.
By conducting this analysis, the study seeks to contribute to a deeper understanding of how education policy shapes the operational space of schools and the professional practice of teachers. It is hoped that the study will be of relevance to teacher education, school leadership and policy development aimed at fostering a more inclusive school environment for all students
Comparative stakeholder perceptions of wildlife management in five European multi-use landscapes
Human-wildlife coexistence in shared landscapes requires effectively navigating different stakeholder interests. Despite progress in this field, most studies focus on a limited number of “problematic” wildlife species. This narrow scope overlooks the species-specific nature of human-wildlife interactions. To identify general patterns in stakeholder perceptions of diverse wildlife species, we implemented a modified 3i (interest, influence, impact) method to assess how individuals within seven stakeholder groups (crop farmers, livestock farmers, foresters, hunters, tourism operators, protected area managers, and staff of environmental non-governmental organizations) rated their interest in, their influence on, and how they are impacted by twelve wildlife species categories: moose, red deer, wild reindeer, chamois, roe deer, brown bear, wild boar, grey wolf, European ground squirrel, cormorant, eagles, and vultures (some of them were site-specific). The study design consisted of two steps: 1) assessing expert perceptions of the 3i for each stakeholder-species combination in each of the five study areas in Bulgaria, Germany, Italy, Norway, and Spain, and 2) assessing stakeholder (251 individuals) perceptions of the 3i. We found substantial variation in stakeholder perceptions across groups, sites, and species categories. Within-group heterogeneity and individual respondents belonging to multiple stakeholder categories further challenged simplistic assumptions of distinct and well-defined stakeholder perspectives. Expert perceptions often underestimated stakeholder interest in wildlife species categories and occasionally diverged from stakeholder-perceptions of influence and impact. Notably, perceived impacts of brown bears, wolves, and eagles often exceeded the perceived influence on these species categories, underscoring a sense of powerlessness in managing interactions in some sites. Our study provides a comparative framework for understanding major patterns in key conservation conflicts in Europe, and emphasizes the importance of addressing contextualized stakeholder diversity and heterogeneity for more effective co-management of human-wildlife coexistence. These findings offer actionable pathways for improving conservation outcomes and participatory wildlife management across Europe. Beslutninger i initialfasen
To av hovedfunnene viser hvor viktig erfaring er for disse beslutningene, og at analytisk tilnærming tar over for intuisjon jo mer kompleks situasjonen er.As police officers, one often finds oneself in situations where decisions must be made, and where time and available information set the framework for these decisions. In our assignment, we have researched how the initial phase influences decision-making within police leadership. Investigation leaders, operations leaders, and task leaders bear the responsibility for all initial incidents in which the police are involved. What forms the basis for making decisions that may have significant consequences when time is limited, and only a small amount of information to rely on? This question has developed into our research problem:
In what way does the initial phase influence the decisions made by the police leadership?
In order to shed light on the problem, we have examined theories on what the initial phase is, and what challenges it may present. Furthermore, we explore three decision models, which in turn are linked to the reflections of our informants. To elicit these reflections, we have conducted qualitative in-depth interviews with task and operations leaders at the operations center, as well as investigation leaders at joint criminal case intake, all from the Eastern Police District. This has formed the data foundation for our analysis.
The informants reflected on how they handle the uncertainties of the initial phase when making decisions. Furthermore, they considered how collaboration and experience play crucial roles in facilitating decision-making. Two of the main findings highlights the importance of experience for these decisions, while also revealing that an analytical approach tends to replace intuition as situations become more complex
This research aims to explore how teachers identify and differentiate teaching for students with high learning potential in mathematics. The research question investigated is:
What characterizes five mathematics teachers ́ identification and differentiated teaching for students with high learning protentional in middle school?
The study was conducted using a phenomenological approach, where five mathematics teachers were interviewed, and their subjective perspectives formed the basis of the findings. The interviews were guided by semi-structured interview protocol, allowing flexibility for additional input and themes to emerge during the conversations. The answers to the research question were derived from a thematic analysis of the transcribed interviews. The analysis resulted in four main categories, which were formulated as key findings and used as headings in the results and discussion:
Teachers describe and identify students with high learning potential based on subjective understanding. There is no clear or unified definition, but characteristics such as high intrinsic motivation, independence, curiosity, and the ability to see patterns and connections were frequently mentioned by teachers.
Didactic adaptations are largely influenced by the teacher ́s own approach. Common strategies include differentiated tasks, open-ended problem-solving, and digital tools. However, several teachers noted that students with high learning potential often work independently and therefore receive less follow-up than they should.
Adaptations are evaluated based on teacher observation, test results, and student self- assessment. The evaluation is mainly informal, and several teachers expressed a need for more systematic assessment practices to ensure that instructional strategies are effective.
Teachers identify several factors that limit adaptations for students with high learning potential. Time constraints, large class sizes, and a lack of relevant competence were highlighted. These challenges often result in students with high learning potential receiving less support than they are entitled to and in need of
How do CEOs in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Norway perceive their role in the company's environmental sustainability? How do they view the company's responsibility for environmental sustainability?
This study investigates how CEOs in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Norway perceive their role and responsibility in the context of environmental sustainability. Utilizing a qualitative research design with semi-structured interviews, the study explores CEOs’ understanding of environmental sustainability, their perceived leadership roles, decision-making processes, and the challenges they face when implementing sustainable practices.
The findings indicate that CEOs see themselves as critical actors responsible for driving sustainability initiatives within their companies. Their roles encompass initiating sustainability strategies, leading by example, and balancing economic constraints with environmental objectives. Informants identified internal values, external market pressures, and regulatory frameworks as significant factors influencing their sustainability decisions.
Major challenges highlighted include limited financial resources, resistance to change within the organization and supply chains, and navigating unpredictable political frameworks. Despite these obstacles, the study reveals a strong sense of ethical responsibility among the interviewed CEOs, who acknowledge that SMEs have a substantial role in contributing to environmental sustainability. They emphasize that collective efforts across different-sized enterprises are essential for achieving meaningful environmental impact.
The study contributes to existing literature by providing insights into the relatively underexplored area of environmental sustainability within SMEs. It highlights the nuanced perspectives of SME leaders, stressing the need for balanced approaches to sustainability that incorporate both economic viability and ethical commitments. Finally, the thesis suggests areas for future research, including larger and more diverse samples, deeper qualitative studies, mixed-method approaches, comparative industry analyses, and international studies to further enrich understanding in this field
