    When School Feels Like Home, and Home Feels Like School: Exploring Motherly Mathematics Education

    This article introduces the concept of motherly mathematics education, which establishes a meaningful and validating space common to the home and school environments, facilitating learners’ ability to transcend the constraints of traditional mathematics instruction. The author describes the basic features of motherly mathematics education based on his personal experiences and classroom practices. The study employs a multi-paradigmatic transformative education method that incorporates art-based (auto)ethnographic enquiry and philosophical analysis rooted in transformative learning theory. Co-generative enquiry is used as a research tool to explore both implicit and explicit aspects of learning mathematics. The overarching research question guiding the study is, how does the author conceptualise key features of motherly mathematics education in instructional practice? The study argues that a motherly mathematics pedagogy supports equity and the diversification of student interests and participation, interpreting the curriculum as the dance of a mosaic of diversity and portraying assessment as an ongoing developmental process.publishedVersio

    Ocean warming shapes embryonic developmental prospects of the next generation in Atlantic cod

    Although early embryonic protein production relies exclusively on maternal molecules such as messenger RNAs (mRNAs) incorporated into ovarian follicles, knowledge about any thermally induced, intergenerational effects is scarce in ectotherms. Here, we investigated how elevated temperatures (9°–12°C vs. 6°C) during oogenesis influenced the next generation by targeting maternal mRNAs in Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) embryos, in view of up- and down-regulated genes in ovarian follicles of pre-spawning adults. Overall, the spawning female liver showed significantly higher levels of free amino acids and N-metabolites at 9°C than at 6°C. Higher-than-optimal temperatures induced adjustments in embryo transcriptome proportional to the temperature increase relative to the control group. The adjustments included alterations in maternal-effect genes, which are developmentally conserved among vertebrates. The transcriptomic differences for a selection of genes in embryos were reflected in ovarian follicles (containing multiple cell types) several months ahead of the spawning season, implying that environmental conditions of the adults are key for adjusting the genetic instructions for offspring development. This programming of fundamental traits from mother to offspring appears part of a sophisticated process to adapt the offspring to a changing ocean, though within life stage-specific, physiological thermal tolerance windows.publishedVersio

    Strength Training Among Male Master Cyclists—Practices, Challenges, and Rationales

    Background: Cycling performance declines with age due to reduced aerobic capacity, along with reductions in muscle mass and bone density. Strength training can help counter these effects. This study aims to explore the strength training practices, challenges, and decision-making rationale of male master cyclists to optimize performance and health as they age. Methods: A total of 555 male master cyclists aged 35 and above completed an online questionnaire, distributed via social media platforms, that included Likert-type, single- and multiple-selection, and open-ended questions. Participants were then divided into two age groups: 35–49 years (n = 359) and ≥50 years (n = 196). Analyses involved descriptive statistics, Wilcoxon signed-rank tests, Mann–Whitney U-tests, and chi-square tests, with qualitative data analyzed using content analysis. Results: More cyclists engaged in strength training during the off-/pre-season, with a significant reduction in both frequency and the number of cyclists engaging in strength training during the race season. The strength training practice was focused mainly on core and lower body, employing hypertrophy and maximal strength training methods. Key challenges included fatigue induced by strength training and limited time to perform strength training. The main rationale for the strength training revolved around improving cycling performance, reducing injury risk, and the health benefits of strength training. Both age categories, but the older group in particular, reported bone health as a primary rationale for strength training. Conclusions: While strength training offers performance and health benefits, issues of fatigue and time constraints remain substantial, suggesting the need for tailored training programs to improve adherence and effectiveness.publishedVersio
