Sleep problems were unrelated to social media use in the late COVID-19 pandemic phase: A cross-national study.

Sleep problems are commonly related to stress and mental health problems. However, social media use has become widespread in the general population during recent years, and their addictive potential may influence people’s sleep routine. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic gave rise to substantial mental health problems in the population, and restrictions in social life gave social media a unique position as means for both entertainment and interpersonal contact. The aim of the study was to examine sleep problems in relationship to social media use in a cross-national sample two years after the COVID-19 outbreak. Participants were 1405 adults from four countries who completed a cross-sectional online survey. The data were analyzed with independent samples t-tests, Chi Squared tests of independence, and single and multivariable logistic regression analyses. Of the 858 (61.1%) participants who reported sleep problems during the past weeks, a substantial proportion (n = 353, 41.1%) related their sleep problems to their experience with COVID-19. With adjustments for age, gender, employment, and psychological distress, more hours of daily social media use was not significantly associated with sleep problems. However, higher age (OR: 1.13, p = 0.01), female gender (OR: 1.69, p<0.001), having employment (OR: 1.34, p = 0.04), and higher levels of psychological distress (OR: 1.20, p<0.001) were independently associated with sleep problems. While the debate about the pros and cons of social media use continue, this study suggests that higher levels of social media use was not of great concern for people’s sleep quality in the late COVID-19 pandemic phase. However, other aspects of social media use (eg, time of the day, content of interactions, associated stress experience) may be more relevant for understanding sleep problems and may be taken into consideration for people who experience such problems.publishedVersio

Ecotheology from the Sámi Church Council in the Church of Norway – an ecocritical analysis of statements

Since as far back as the 1990s, different theologians have proclaimed that Sámi spirituality provides useful wisdom for churches seeking to develop ecotheological reflection. I explore to what degree statements from the Sámi church council (SCC) confirm this claim. I do so by analysing statements from the SCC on environmental questions, using methods from established ecological hermeneutics. I show that the minutes from the SCC contain an ecotheology that places more emphasis on social than on ecological sustainability and that the theology embedded in the statements reflects the dominant ecotheology of the Church of Norway (CoN). This finding stands in contrast to previous studies that conclude that Sámi ecotheology challenges the CoN and other Western churches to focus more on the connection between humans and non-human nature in future ecotheological statements. The gap between previous findings and those presented here invites discussion of whether this type of text and the Western analytical methods used here are suitable for studying Sámi ecospirituality. In the conclusion, I state that Western researchers and church leaders are faced with a challenge in terms of selecting relevant data and developing a methodology that bridges Sámi spirituality and Western contemporary ecotheology.publishedVersio

A new treaty on intellectual property, genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge

    No full text
Among the most contentious practices within a globalized and corporatized economy is allegations of so-called ‘biopiracy’. This refers to the taking of genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge without either free, prior and informed consent or any mechanisms for benefit-sharing with the community that provided the resource. Attempts to revise the TRIPS Agreement (Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights) to bring it more in compliance with the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) have not led to concrete results. The article analyzes CBD provisions, binding protocols and non-binding guiding documents, and two less known treaties of the United Nations. The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), that joined the United Nations in 1974, has – after negotiating for almost 15 years – adopted the WIPO Treaty on Intellectual Property, Genetic Resources and Associated Traditional Knowledge. The article demonstrates how this WIPO Treaty is embedded in the ‘defensive strategy’ of traditional knowledge protection, enabling patent examiners to reject a patent as the alleged invention does not represent new and applicable knowledge. The alternative, termed ‘positive strategy’, is witnessed primarily in India’s Plant Variety and Farmers’ Rights Act, which has resulted in more grants of certificates for so-called ‘farmers’ varieties’ compared to all other varieties together. Other United Nations treaties include elements of such protection, but not on the level of specify and subsequent implementation as found in India. The negotiations of what became the WIPO Treaty has generated increased awareness of indigenous peoples’ traditional knowledge and should be easy to ratify as it aligns with existing legislation.publishedVersio

Women`s lived experiences with nurse-supported digital rehabilitation after gynecological cancer: a phenomenological hermeneutical study.

Gynaecological cancer survivors face various post-treatment challenges, including physical, psychological, social and existential difficulties. Despite existing follow-up, many women experience unmet needs and lack of rehabilitation services. In the present study, we aimed to gain a comprehensive understanding of how participation in Gynea, a nurse-supported digital rehabilitation program, is experienced after gynaecological cancer treatment. Through in-depth interviews with 20 women, four main themes emerged from a phenomenological hermeneutic analysis. The theme Vital but demanding work described participation as beneficial but emotionally demanding. The theme Normalisation leading to self-compassion and acceptance showed that shared experiences helped women normalise and accept changes. The theme It takes time to digest described the need for individual time processing the cancer experience. The last theme Nursing support as essential in digital rehabilitation, described nursing support as providing safety, guidance and motivation. Overall, participation helped alleviate some of the existential distress following illness and treatment, with nursing support crucial for engagement and completement of the programme. We used the consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ) to support the research process and ensure transparency in our work.publishedVersio

From gender-segregated to gender-inclusive deacon education in 1970s Norway: Impacts on professional identity

This article explores the gendered history of Norwegian deacon education. We look at the case of the Deacons’ Home (Diakonhjemmet) in Oslo, established in 1890 to train male nurse deacons. The aim was that they would complement female deaconesses’ work with their physical strength and male character traits. 1968 marked a turning point for gender-segregated training, as the deacon programme was opened to women. We ask how this event affected the male professional deacon identity. The article finds that the institution’s nurturing of deacon masculinity until the early 1960s vanished over the next decade, marked by student uprisings, professionalisation and reforms in the Church of Norway. Despite scattered protests, gender-inclusive training and a fusion of gendered professional titles were necessary for the Deacons’ Home programme to survive in Norwegian higher education and the labour market. At the same time, professional identity markers were gradually lost during this process.publishedVersio

The roles and contributions of women to the health of their families and household economics in rural areas in the district of Mbe, Cameroon.

This study examined the roles and contributions of women in family health and household economics in the rural Mbe district of Cameroon. The study employed a qualitative approach, descriptive statistics, surveys, and purposive sampling to select 25 households across five villages in Mbe. Data were collected through in-depth interviews. Thematic coding was used to analyze the data, revealing nuanced insights into women's multifaceted roles. The findings indicated that women in rural Mbe were integral to their families' well-being, actively managing childcare, early education, and minor illnesses through a combination of traditional remedies and modern healthcare practices. Economically, they played crucial roles in farming, small-scale trading, and financial decision-making, significantly contributing to household income and resilience. Additionally, women influenced local governance through active participation in community organizations, shaping decisions that fostered communal cohesion. This study contributes uniquely to the existing literature by highlighting the intersection of women's evolving economic roles and their impact on community decision-making in rural Cameroon. Empowering these women through targeted resources and policies is both urgent and essential for advancing family health, economic stability, and sustainable rural development.publishedVersio

Seeing several sides of the story: Unpacking an ethical dilemma in home-based care

Healthcare professionals in home-based care face various challenges at the system and patient levels, which can lead to ethical dilemmas. In addition, home-based care workers lack arenas to share their experiences, as they are often scattered across the care district, work alone, and do not have the immediate support of a colleague. Based on ethnographic fieldwork among professional caregivers in home-based care in Norway, we present a case of an ethical dilemma that occurred during a patient visit. Using a narrative ethics approach, we unpack the case into six “stories” and show the context of the ethical dilemma. Home-based care staff may not be aware of an ethical dilemma as it unfolds. Reflection on the case leads us to suggest that staff would benefit from some form of clinical ethics support to learn, share stories, and receive support. We also suggest that professional caregivers and patients would benefit from advance care planning as a way to clarify expectations between patients and healthcare professionals. Clinical ethics support and advance care planning are ways for staff and patients, respectively, to let their voices and stories be heard.publishedVersio

Engagement factors affect academic success through study approaches among university students in physical education and sport: A mediation analysis

    No full text
Introduction: University students should engage with the study and ensure they adopt productive study approaches, but the nature of relationships between engagement and study approaches are under-researched. The study aimed to investigate how emotional, cognitive, and behavioral engagement affect academic success through study approaches among physical education and sports students. Methods: Online forms were submitted by 488 students in physical education and sports (age range 19–25 years, Mean = 21 ± 1.5 year). They completed surveys regarding their academic engagement, study approaches, and grade point average (GPA). Analyses of associations were conducted through linear regression analysis and mediation analysis. Results: Results from the linear regression analysis showed correlations between academic engagement factors, study approach variables, and GPA, with higher GPA correlating with higher scores on behavioral engagement, cognitive engagement, surface theory task, and deep theory task, and with lower scores on surface practical task. The analysis of total and direct effects revealed positive associations between all academic engagement factors and GPA. Emotional engagement exhibited a positive association with GPA mediated by study approaches. All engagement dimensions appear to influence academic success among these students. Conclusion: The influence of emotional engagement on academic success appears in part to be operating through its effects on study approaches. The study can enable educators in monitoring and enhancing student engagement, thereby supporting students in their pursuit of high academic performance in physical education and sport.publishedVersio
