Synthesis and characterization of nanobiochar from rice husk biochar for the removal of safranin and malachite green from water
Xenobiotic pollution in environment is a potential risk to marine life, and human health. Nanobiotechnology is
an advanced and emerging solution for the removal of environmental pollutants. Adsorption-based technologies
are being used to alleviate the global prevalence of xenobiotics like dyes, due to their high efficacy and cost
effectiveness. Current study explored the potential of nanobiochar syntehsized via ultrasonication and centrifugation from rice husk for dye removal from water. It involves the synthesis of nanobiochar from rice husk
biochar for removal of Safranin, Malachite green, and a mixture of both from aqueous water. Biochar was
synthesized through pyrolysis at 600 ◦C for 2 h. To convert it into nanobiochar, sonication and centrifugation
techniques were applied. The yield obtained was 27.5% for biochar and 0.9% for nanobiochar. Nanobiochar
analysis through Fourier-Transform Spectrometer (FTIR), X-ray Power Diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron
microscopy (SEM) suggested its crystalline nature having minerals rich in silicon, with a cracked and disintegrated carbon structure due to high temperature and processing treatments. Removal of dyes by nanobiochar
was evaluated by changing different physical parameters i.e., nanobiochar dose, pH, and temperature. Pseudo-first order model and pseudo-second order model were applied to studying the adsorption kinetics mechanism.
Kinetics for adsorption of dyes followed the pseudo-second order model suggesting the removal of dyes by
process of chemical sorption. High adsorption was found at a higher concentration of nanobiochar, high temperature, and neutral pH. Maximum elimination percentages of safranin, malachite green, and a mixture of dyes
were obtained as 91.7%, 87.5%, and 85% respectively. We conclude that nanobiochar could be a solution for dye
removal from aqueous media.Biotecnologí

The "Newgate" Effect: the recovery of the memory of those sent to the gallows in "En el último azul" and "Por el cielo y más allá" by Carme Riera
De entre el corpus de literatura de
patíbulo europea, los Newgate Calendars
suponen un hito por su popularidad y por su
difusión desde el siglo XVII. Pese a estar
Amongst the European corpus of
dying speeches, the Newgate Calendars are
paramount due to their popularity since the
seventeenth century. Originally thought of as a
narration with a moralistic tone to validate the
status quo, it soon became a mass phenomenon.
In the nineteenth century, the role of Destiny
and the conception of crime as a sin is replaced
by a break of the social contract and an attempt
against private property. It is then published in
verse to be sung for the masses and in prose
for the high class. As a result, a new type of
fiction is born; the Newgate Novel. One in
which the criminal is portrayed as a hero. The
goal of this article is to establish a comparison
between En el último azul and Por el cielo
y más allá and the process followed by the
Newgate narrations between the seventeenth
and the nineteenth centuries. Beginning with
the autos de fe of 1691 and continuing in
the nineteenth century with the descendants
of one of those burnt at the stake, the novels
gradually depart from the religious discourse,
problematize the veracity of the official
texts and position themselves in favor of the
accused.Humanidade
Lack of evidence for retroviral infections formerly related to chronic fatigue in Spanish Fibromyalgia patients
The etiology of fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome (FM/CFS) is currently unknown. A recurrent viral infection is an attractive hypothesis repeatedly found in the literature since it would explain the persistent pain and tiredness these patients suffer from. The initial striking link of two distinct orphan retroviruses: the gamma retroviruses murine leukemia virus (MLV)-related virus and the delta retrovirus T-lymphotropic virus type 2 (HTLV-2) to chronic fatigue have not been confirmed to date. Results: Genomic DNA (gDNA) from 75 fibromyalgia patients suffering from chronic fatigue and 79 age-matched local healthy controls were screened for the presence of MLV-related and HTLV-2 related proviral sequences. The XMRV env gene was amplified in 20% of samples tested (24% patients/15% healthy controls). Unexpectedly, no PCR amplifications from independent gDNA preparations of the same individuals were obtained. None of the positive samples showed presence of contaminating murine sequences previously reported by other investigators, neither contained additional regions of the virus making us conclude that the initial env amplification came from spurious air-driven amplicon contaminants. No specific HTLV-2 sequences were obtained at any time from any of the 154 quality-controlled gDNA preparations screened. Conclusions: Previous associations between MLV-related or HTLV-2 retrovirus infection with chronic fatigue must be discarded. Thus, studies showing positive amplification of HTLV-2 sequences from chronic fatigue participants should be revised for possible undetected technical problems. To avoid false positives of viral infection, not only extreme precautions should be taken when nested-PCR reactions are prepared and exhaustive foreign DNA contamination controls performed, but also consistent amplification of diverse regions of the virus in independent preparations from the same individual must be demanded. The fact that our cohort of patients did not present evidence of any of the two types of retroviral infection formerly associated to chronic fatigue does not rule out the possibility that other viruses are involved in inciting or maintaining fibromyalgia and/or chronic fatigue conditions.Medicin
Association of germline variants in telomere maintenance genes (POT1, TERF2IP, ACD, and TERT) with spitzoid morphology in familial melanoma: A multi-center case series
Spitzoid morphology in familial melanoma has been associated with germline variants in
POT1, a telomere maintenance gene (TMG), suggesting a link between telomere biology and spitzoid
differentiation. The aim is to assess if familial melanoma cases associated with germline variants in TMG (POT1, ACD,
TERF2IP, and TERT ) commonly exhibit spitzoid morphology.Medicin
Adaptation and validation of a scale to assess digital teaching competence in soccer coaches
Since 2015, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has held a convention with the aim of
updating its technical qualifications for the training of its football coaches. It has proposed widespread changes,
but with a particular recommendation for the creation of a subject about New Technologies. This proposal is in
line with the natural evolution of today's society and with an increasing digital presence in all professional fields.
The overarching concern for quality teaching in digital competences involves, first and foremost, the necessary
adoption of these digital competences by their trainers. As a result, the aim of this research is to adapt and
validate a scale, previously validated in other training contexts, to assess the digital teaching competence
(hereafter, DTC) of soccer coaches. The study sample consists of 612 coaches at different levels who are
registered in the Football Federation of the Valencian Community (hereafter, FFCV). The sample contains a
higher percentage of men (91.7%) than women (8.3%) and a mean age of 30.88 years. A confirmatory factor
analysis was performed, which revealed five factors grouping 31 indicators: Information and Literacy (5 items),
Communication and Collaboration (6 items), Digital Content Creation (9 items), Security (6 items) and Problem
Solving (5 items). Goodness-of-Fit indicators showed adequate values: (x2 /gl=2.82); RMSA= 0.6 (Confidence
Interval= 0.6-0.7); CFI=.91; IFI= .91. Reliability was tested by Composite Reliability, Cronbach's Alpha and
Mean Variance Extracted values. The results of the research support the reliability and validity of the
questionnaire that was adapted for the purpose of assessing the digital teaching competence of soccer coaches.
Humanidade
Bronchiolitis, Regardless of Its Etiology and Severity, Is Associated With Increased Risk of Asthma: A Population-Based Study
An association exists between severe respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)–bronchiolitis and a subsequent increased risk of recurrent
wheezing (RW) and asthma. However, a causal relationship remains unproven. Using a retrospective population-based cohort
study (339 814 children), bronchiolitis during the first 2 years of life (regardless of etiology and severity) was associated with at
least a 3-fold increased risk of RW/asthma at 2–4 years and an increased prevalence of asthma at ≥5 years of age. The risk was
similar in children with mild bronchiolitis as in those with hospitalized RSV-bronchiolitis and was higher in children with
hospitalized non-RSV-bronchiolitis. The rate of RW/asthma was higher when bronchiolitis occurred after the first 6 months of
life. Our results seem to support the hypothesis of a shared predisposition to bronchiolitis (irrespective of etiology) and RW/
asthma. However, 60% of hospitalized bronchiolitis cases in our setting are due to RSV, which should be paramount in
decision-making on imminent RSV prevention strategiesMedicin
Is Frailty Diagnosis Important in Patients with COPD? A Narrative Review of the Literature
Frailty is prevalent in older adults and is related to a worsening functionality, quality of life,
and health outcomes. Though there is an increasing interest in this field, the relationship between
frailty and worsening COPD outcomes remains unknown. A narrative review of the literature with
studies published between 2018 and 2022 was carried out to address three questions: the prevalence
of frailty and other geriatric syndromes in COPD patients, the link between frailty and worsening
health outcomes in COPD patients, and the non-pharmacological interventions performed in order to
reverse frailty in these patients. A total of 25 articles were selected. Frailty prevalence ranged from
6% and 85.9%, depending on the COPD severity and the frailty measurement tool used. Frailty in
COPD patients was related to a high prevalence of geriatric syndromes and to a high incidence of
adverse events such as exacerbations, admissions, readmissions, and mortality. One study showed
improvements in functionality after physical intervention. In conclusion, the prevalence of frailty is
associated with a high incidence of geriatric syndromes and adverse events in COPD patients. The
use of frailty screenings and a comprehensive geriatric assessment of COPD patients is advisable in
order to detect associated problems and to establish individualized approaches for better outcomes.Medicin
