A Secure touch : HI system for PPE doffing process
Pandemic happens every year, which brings deaths and tragedy to people globally. Healthcare workers always have more risks of dying from pandemics. Therefore, more protective measures should be taken to help health-care workers to defend the virus while fighting against the pandemic monsters.
A Secure Touch is a system-oriented design and industrial design project that focuses on posi-tioning the risks and giving the possible solution. The project concludes with a Hand-isolation system with a series of products called Secure Tools. The system is placed in the scenario of PPE doffing process (The process of taking off personal protection equipment) for healthcare work-ers. By introducing four Secure Tools into the whole PPE doffing process and abandoning tradi-tional hand hygiene solutions, a distance will emerge between hands and dirty PPEs, which pro-tects healthcare workers from getting self-contamination during the doffing process.
Because of the limitation of time, the project only ends up with a completion of Unzipper (Se-cure Tool-3) and exploration conclusions of Rapid Glove (Secure Tool-4).
Unzipper is a Secure Tool for achieving a more secured unzipping motion by isolating hands from the high-risk areas of coveralls, it is used in the scenario of coverall unzipping. Unzipper is a combination of two components, Tab and Arm. Tab is the part that connecting normal zip-per tabs from coveralls, it is the most important part for Unzipper tool, it has a function of zip-per-searching and unzipping. Arm is the auxiliary tool for Unzipper Tab. It is only used for some complex scenarios to blind search the Tab and unzip the coverall with a higher secure level.

Slog : exploring the potential of fish byproducts as an alternative to plastic
954 000 tons of fish byproducts is produced annually by Norwegian processing plants alone. As a resource it is plentiful and its ongoing. This diploma project is an exploration of the potential within the marine waste streams.
The Norwegian Government has set a national strategy to increase utilization and value creation of marine residual raw materials, in order to reach the United Nations goal of a circular economy.
Through a multi-disciplinary design approach, this diploma project suggests two design proposals to support this strategy.
Working collaboratively with relevant actors, I have mapped out necessary steps in order to expand the industry of fish byproducts. It is meant to serve as a holistic overview, to better understand the steps needed to achieve the Government’s vision.
To contribute to this vision, I have explored the inherent potential of fish byproducts to develop an alternative to plastic. In order to illustrate this development, I have designed alternative uses to serve as opportunity areas, with the aim to inspire further research. In addition, I hope to inspire a shift in the perceived value of fish byproducts: from waste to resource.
My main ambition for this project is to stimulate the development of wholesome raw material utilization, as well as contribute to the vision of a circular economy.submittedVersio
HAB : Quality sleep during a humanitarian crisis
I løpet av sovekapsel prosjektet jeg hadde i et tidligere semester, tenkte jeg på andre bruksområder annet enn kontorer/arbeidsplasser kapselen kunne vært nyttig. Da jeg gjorde research til det prosjektet fant jeg ut at følelsen av trygghet er et viktig element for at man skal kunne få en god natts søvn(1). Dette fikk meg til å tenke på steder som er mer åpent der folk må sove med mange andre i rommet. Steder som hosteller, klasserom, gymsaler eller lignende. Blant disse stedene så jeg for meg situasjoner der man føler seg mest sårbar, nemlig etter en naturkatastrofe der man har mistet hjemmet sitt og må derfor sove i saler med andre som også har mistet sine hjem. Med et søk på Google fant jeg forskning som kobler utvikling av PTSD
til dårlig søvn, søvnforstyrrelser på grunn av overfylte saler og mangel på privatliv etter en traumatisk opplevelse, i forskningenes tilfeller jordskjelvene i Japan (2011)2 og Haiti (2010)3. I boken “Why we sleep.” forklarer Dr. Matthew Walker hvor viktig REM søvn (som er lettest å oppnå med god kvalitetssøvn uten søvnforstyrrelser) er for å bearbeide traumatiske hendelser man har opplevd, det hjelper med å ufarliggjøre hendelsen, nesten som eksponeringsterapi ved å vise ofrene hendelsen i tryggere omgivelser.
Planen er å bruke bølgepapp som materiale på grunn av lett tilgjengelighet på materialet i så og si alle land, kort roduksjonstid(om verktøyet allerede eksisterer), høy resirkulerbarhet og kost. Siden dette er noe som blir brukt i en relativt kort tidsrom er det heller ikke et behov for at materialet har en lang holdbarhet. Når det gjelder formbarhet i materialet så er det noe lavt men egenskapene til bølgepapp er ekstremt høyt og i dette tilfellet er funksjonen til kapselen det viktigste elementet. Jeg ser for meg at
bølgepapp er veldig godt egnet til denne situasjonen.

After prohibition: A speculative look at Norway, after the war on drugs
In 2020 a proposal for a new drug policy in Norway will be considered. The policy transfers the responsibility of handling people with drug-use related challenges from the justice sector to the health sector. This is expected to depenalise drugs for personal consumption to some degree. The shift in attitudes from drug use as crime to drug use as health challenge might open the conversation towards the possibility of legalisation of drugs for recreational use. The topic is inflamed and the two main factions, “for regulation” and “against regulation” act like echo-chambers; making the debate climate hostile and moving slowly. Power imbalances also play a major part. One side is backed by police and the other have traditionally been supporting criminal activity. After prohibition uses a process consisting of futures, design fiction, service design and discursive design methods to work around the echo-chambers and power dynamics. It engages each faction in structured dialogues about difficult questions that might come up under the new policy. The dialogues attempt to create understanding of the opposing factions points of view and intentions. By understanding each other, and engaging in public discussion we can move forward into a Norway, after prohibition.submittedVersio
Performance-oriented architecture and urban design
This article discusses a performance-oriented approach to architectural and urban design that seeks to intensify the interaction between architectures and their specific settings and environments. The overarching aim is to expand performance-oriented design in architecture to urban design and to integrate architectural, urban design and landscape design into a multi- scalar and multi-domain approach. This effort is currently comprised of three distinct research by design efforts: [i] designs for urban areas with a focus on demographic and environmental aspects, [ii] designs for peripheral areas with a focus on preserving or restoring vital local bio-physical conditions and interrelations, and [iii] designs for rural areas that elaborate an integrative approach towards constructions and correlating land uses. In order to facilitate this approach, computational information-based design is linked with systems-thinking. Unpacking making : a product design critique on emergent uses of additive manufacturing
In recent decades, designers have applied 3D printers as Rapid Prototyping (RP) tools for developing design ideas. Today, as technical capabilities are advancing, these tools are finding newfound uses within design practice as an Additive Manufacturing (AM) technology. Similarly, technical advances are shifting AM towards consumer use. This thesis sees a need to compliment technical capabilities of AM such as customisability, enhancement and computation through a research by design based inquiry located in product design. Through such a practice-led mode of research, it argues that AM needs to be supported by critical reflection of its technical capacities, as they are subjected to interpretation through contexts of use.
In the context of product design, the project of the thesis is to tackle this need for sociotechnical perspectives in AM. It does so through investigating the relationship between design, making and critique. As the title suggests, unpacking making plays a central role in accessing topics of research, through its engagement with practice and in generating knowledge. These research topics cover the emergence of AM, product design expertise and technological critique. The study applies methods and processes from within design and making to generate knowledge around the emergence and use of AM. I connect this emergent use to my own constructive design practices, where I have developed novel 3D printing processes, as well as through observing expert- and prospective design-practitioners. This mode of inquiry is supported by critical design approaches, such as critical making. Together they situate the study within design pedagogy and critique.
In the mode of a thesis by compilation, I develop a holistic model of design- making critique in which product design is oriented towards critical and future-oriented forms of inquiry. With making as a core and integrating activity, the model moves from design-making critique through emergent use groups, into a wider technological design frame. The model is positioned with respect to the diverse means, context, tools and memberships in which making is made manifest. The model has the potential to contribute to design practice as a tool for technological reflection.
The study makes the following overarching contributions. Firstly, it critiques the sociotechnical transformation of AM from within the product design field. Secondly, it incorporates theories of socio-technological development into design pedagogy. Thirdly, it realigns critical making approaches to design expertise. For design practitioners, the study may also be useful for generating insight into the technical materials of AM, and in applying them in contextual design processes.submittedVersio
Kom Hjem Et virtuelt hjemme-sykehus for premature nyfødte
Kom Hjem er en konseptskisse av et digitalt samarbeidsverktøy for Sykehuset i Vestfold, SiV. Verktøyet skal brukes av sykepleiere og foreldre til premature nyfødte. Dette muliggjør et hjemme-sykehus på nyfødtavdelingen ved SiV, der mor og barn kan komme tidligere hjem. Samarbeidsverktøyet er -et digitalt oppslagsverk for informasjon-synlige verdier av parametere som blir målt på barnet-en kommunikasjonsplattform mellom foreldre og sykepleiere etter hjemreise-en triage (grønn, gul og rød), der grad av alvor blir beskreveti tre scenarioer. Kom Hjem som konseptskisse har bidratt til visjon og detaljering som en del av et forprosjekt for innovasjonsprosjektet Virtuelt Hjemme-Sykehus, VHS ved SiV. VUME – impacting society with inclusive presentations
Information and communication technology has revolutionised the traditional systems of knowledge sharing. Today, hundreds of digital presentations are made every day in conferences and events as well as by various organisations and educational institutions. However, the accessibility aspects of those presentations have hardly been given any consideration. According to the World Health Organisation more than one billion or 1 in every 5 people on this planet lives with some form of disability and 70 percent of those disabilities are invisible. When conducting presentations it is hard to know who in your audience might have a disability.This diploma project investigates the current challenges faced by both presenters and participants and to solve the current communication and engagement challenges of digital presentations for participants with situational limitations and permanent disabilities. The project aims to deliver an interactive, mobile accessible and web based product to provide an experience that will help improve underserved audience’s interaction and ability to consume content in multiple relevant modalities where they were not able to properly consume in the past. Also to achieve increased interactivity between the presenter and the audience using the presenter and attendee product.The development process is based upon iterative loop strategy where stakeholders were involved from the very early stage of concept development and to make sure to design and develop features in close collaboration with them.The project goal is to globally impact the way knowledge is shared through digital presentations and the vision is to make this knowledge inclusive and accessible for all.submittedVersio
