    This experimental design diploma takes Cisco Norway as a key example to explore cross-disciplinary collaboration within a large technological organization. With the hope of sparking inspiration in people’s daily collaboration with others who speak different technical languages, this project analyses the current relationships across disciplines in Cisco. In addition, the project suggests new ways of collaboration embedded in the existing workplace environment within a framework for cultural change. This report is designed to allow you to easily navigate and understand the project.     My interest lies in seeking a credible housing type which enables for all kinds of lived life, making the city a place for all. I believe the answer to this interest could be found in an intermediate state of generality and specificity. Rooms that permits a wide range of use, whilst being spaces comprised of specific qualities and particular experiences. On the basis of own experiences, historical and contemporary references, I want to question what a dwelling can be today. Problematizing the condition of temporality that characterizes Oslo, and its later built environment. Rather than looking outward to the citys periphery, I focus on the inner city, with the intention of learning about an existing urban condition and how to adapt to it, contrary to reinventing one. My sites are located in Herslebsgate, Tøyen. I chose two vacant lots, each part of separate carrés, standing adjacent to one and other. Their orientation is south-west to north-east. The lots measurements are 15,4m and 10m wide. Whilst the larger one borders to two solid gables, the smaller borders to one solid gable and one fasade. In the larger lot, I propose a five story housing block. On the ground floor it is rooms for businesses. On the consecutive three floors above, it is apartments. On the Fifth floor, it is a collective space, withdrawn from the facade, which serves both carrés. In the smaller lot, I propose a slender four story Town House, securing space and air for the adjacent facade. The house is thought of as one unit, with room for businesses on the ground floor and living on the floors above.submittedVersio

    Reframing Wood Construction. Innovation in architecture through activating material properties with the use of digital technologies. This thesis focuses on the relationships between material-centred design, digital technologies and environmentally-responsible practice with respect to wood construction. It argues that computational design methods and digital manufacturing have the capacity to reframe wood construction, open new opportunities for design, and lead to more sustainable practices. Wood is the building material that frames this research. The long tradition of using wood in construction and its cultural connotations, as well as its heterogeneous structure and its often-unpredictable behaviour, make it a case in point for material-centred design. Today, the predominant approach to wood construction is adaptation to industrialised processes that suppress individual material properties. The thesis proposes to reframe wood construction in order to offer an alternative design method that uses material properties and behaviours as valid design factors. The monograph comprises two main parts: (i) Experiments, and (ii) Perspectives. (i) The first part describes three experimental projects with wood in which inherent material properties and material behaviours are used as a starting point, and computational design techniques and digital fabrication are the main methods. (ii) The second part theorises the approach presented in the experiments. It comprises three perspectives: (1) design methodology that outlines the proposed framework of innovation in wood architecture, (2) design theory that positions the proposed approach within discussion surrounding relationships of form and matter in the history and theory of architecture, and (3) design and technology that discusses the development of technology related to wood architecture and its impact on design and construction. Together, the three perspectives form a discussion of the approach to reframing wood construction. The ultimate goal of the thesis is to reorient architecture towards sustainable construction methods. The thesis identifies that digital technologies have not yet embraced materiality and that digital advances in architecture provide an opportunity for including material parameters as valid design factors. This thesis proposes that digital technologies have the potential to access various latent and palpable potentialities of the material that can deliver design solutions with lower environmental impact.publishedVersio

    Skala flebruksmøbel er et modulært, skalerbart og fleksibelt system for utemøbelprodusenten Vestre som henter sin inspirasjon fra trappens utforming og som sosial møteplass. Med Skala ønsker jeg å gi folk et morsomt møbel med flere nivåer hvor man kan sitte litt som man selv føler for. Med navnet Skala antydes det et system som består av ulike nivåer/høyder/trinn. Det kan også tolkes som noe som kan skaleres opp og ned. Systemet består av moduler i 3 størrelser som kombineres for å lage ulike konfigurasjoner. Trapper ser ut til å være naturlige samlingspunkt hvor folk liker å sitte og møtes. Man kan sitte i ulike nivåer, alt ettersom hva man føler for, eller hvor det er ledig plass. De er landemerker og møteplasser som er lett å få øye på, og man kan gå høyere opp for å lettere se og bli sett. De finnes også i mange størrelser. Mitt utgangspunkt for denne oppgave var: Hvordan kan jeg overføre disse kvalitetene fra trapper til et utemøbel, som i tillegg gir den en fleksibilitet som trapper ikke har? Mitt løsningsforslag er et modulært, skalerbart og fleksibelt system som lar kunden bygge en løsning tilpasset sine behov. Skala flerbruksmøbel er skalerbart fordi det kan bygges stort eller det kan bygges lite. Med de ulike nivåene kan man bygge et variert landskap hvor folk kan finne en plass som passer for dem. Systemet er fleksibelt fordi folk i flere aldre og ulike høyder kan finne et nivå som passer dem, og barn kan bruke trinnene for å komme seg opp og ned. Den er også fleksibel fordi den gir kunden rom til å sette sammen en løsning som passer sitt prosjekt. Kunden kan velge mellom 3 forskjellige materialer i toppflaten, med hvert sitt materiale og distinkte uttrykk. Kassene er i stål og for toppflaten kan man velge mellom treverk (Furu, Kebony, Ask, Eik), resirkulert eierløs havplast eller glassfiberarmert betong. Stålet kan pulverlakkeres i en av Vestres 200 RAL-farger. Dette lar kunden i stor grad tilpasse Skala til sine behov.submittedVersio

    Data centers are physical buildings for storage of digital information. It is easy to forget that these machines even exist, let alone to comprehend the amount of energy they need to operate 24/7. The contradiction being; that they require almost the same amount of energy to be artificially cooled, as to be kept in operation. This makes the data centers account for almost 2 % of the global power demand while the excess heat they produce is released into the atmosphere and rarely utilized. This project is about making the data centers that are so often out of sight a beneficial and visible part of a society. This by both utilizing the excess thermal energy to heat public pools and introducing the program to a more urban context. The context being the city of Åkrehamn, Karmøy. A western city of southern charm, its history and identity is connected to the sea. Here almost in the city center, lies a small islet, crushed and broken by human forces into nothing that would remind of the archetypal textures and tactility of the stone and sand that meets the water elsewhere on Karmøy. The project became about restoring the island and creating a new landscape while respecting the surroundings. The project is therefore mostly brought under the ground with a few key volumes brought up in daylight; such as the entrance, which is an extension of the ramp that brings you down into the facility.submittedVersio

    Panacea Food Lab is a service and systems oriented design diploma that explores healthy diets and food system sustainability in China. Nowadays, China’s food system faces significant challenges in the context of rapid urbanization, population growth, dietary transition, and climate change. The current food system is threatening both human health and environmental sustainability. The project takes a systemic look at the current food system in China. Based on the understanding of the food systems and the target users, Panacea Food Lab suggests a platform targeted at young Chinese consumers that provides a hands-on educational food experience. By combining the offerings from various stakeholders, like food-related social organization, knowledge providers, and local organic farms, the platform provides a comprehensive service. The service includes food innovation workshops and online services. The online part of Panacea Food Lab makes the service more accessible and potentially more influential. It includes an online eco-food market that sells sustainable food and ingredients, a food library where users review and share multimedia and interactive food knowledge, and management tool for users to effortlessly search and book workshops.submittedVersio

    Kunsten å oversette kunnskap om klimatilpasning : kommunens redskaper til å møte ekstremvær

    Denne masteroppgaven fokuserer på hvordan norske kommuner kan prioritere klimatilpasningshensyn innen sine ansvarsområder. Klimatilpasning handler om å ta hensyn til dagens og framtidens klima. Dette ivaretas gjennom kommunens forvaltning av risiko for høyere havnivå, flom, skred og mer ekstremvær. Forvaltningen er et tverrfaglig samspill mellom planleggere, teknisk fagfolk og politikere som prioriterer tiltak og investeringer. For å lykkes er det et behov for å forbedre integrasjon av klimatilpasningsarbeidet i kommunen ved å anvende sektorbasert kunnskap på tvers av fag og områder. Gjennom en dokumentanalyse av 44 kommuneplanens samfunnsdeler og gruppeintervjuer med tre utvalgte kommuner er potensialet for å ivareta klimatilpasningshensyn vurdert. Tverrfaglig samarbeid er evaluert med et analyseverktøy som kombinerer to teoretiske perspektiver fra to forskjellige akademiske tradisjoner. Det ene teorien er “boundary work” som refererer til aktiviteter som formidler og oversetter kunnskap for å minimere kunnskapsgrenser mellom grupper med ulik faglig bakgrunn. Det andre perspektivet er Patrick Geddes’ byplanleggingsteorier som har fokus på at planlegging skal være både kunnskapsbasert og samordnende. Resultatene fra analysen og intervjuene indikerer at mange kommuner er i gang med å prioritere klimatilpasning, spesielt i forhold til samfunnssikkerhet og beredskap og by- og stedsutvikling. Allikevel er det rom for forbedringer, særlig med tanke på å benytte synergipotensialet som finnes mellom kommunenes fagetater. Det er bevissthet om behovet for tverrfaglig arbeid for å kunne lykkes med klimatilpasning, men det er en utfordring å få dette til i praksis. Kommuneplanens samfunnsdel kan i større grad utnyttes som et prosessverktøy som synliggjør bredden i klimatilpasning på tvers av kommunens ansvarsområder. Dette er illustrert med Geddes’ Sted-Arbeid-Folk rammeverk som inngangsport til klimatilpasning og med teksteksempler fra gjeldende kommuneplanens samfunnsdel der klimatilpasning er godt integrert. Eksemplene er presentert i oppgaven som versettelsesredskaper for hvordan klimatilpasning kan fremheves og integreres i kommuneplanens samfunnsdel. På den måten løfter man problemsstillingen opp på et overordnet nivå i kommunens styringsdokumenter som kan forankre dette arbeidet både politisk og internt i kommunen. Oppgaven tar sikte på å inspirere kommuner til å styrke sitt interne tverrfaglig samarbeid for å ivareta klimatilpasningshensyn.     Food for thought

    Food is a basic need. However, it does not just have nutri-tional value. It is a cornerstone of any culture, and a symbol of identity. All around the world, all through history, people have gathered around the pots. Times are changing, and food is currently threatening both people and planet. We need to collectively address the challenges posed by unsustainable food consumption. It is a matter that requires measures at all levels of the food chain. Without giving the consumer the blame or suggesting that we are solely responsible for changing the current trajectory, our approach has been to zoom in on the consumer role. During this diploma, we have been researching what prevents consumers from making sustainable choices, and how design can be used as a tool for change. We have come to the conclusion that in order to engage and act in a transition towards sustainable food consumption, consumers need knowledge about sustainable choices. The choices need to be accessible and convenient and they have to resonate with the culture that the consumer identifies with. Food for thought is a design project where we illustrate possibilities digital tools holds for sustainable food consumption, in a Norwegian context. We have exemplified how they can be utilised to facilitate more sustainable consumption on three different levels through encouraging seasonal shopping in the mainstream grocery store, local grocery shopping through a new REKO platform, and harvesting of food from nature through a new service called Matauk. We believe that sustainability is not a destination, but a journey. Embarking on this journey means continuously challenging our habits and changing the course little by little. Our interventions are therefore designed for the present, not the far future.submittedVersio

    MEANDERINGS /Spaces and species in the Klarälven delta

    The focus of this project is coexistence. Not only how we design buildings to coexist within our own human societies, but also how this concern may be extended to facilitate the existence/dwelling of other species. The topic is investigated through photography, drawings, models, and text. The result is a strategy for wetland restoration at the former airport in Karlstad that today is a drained grass field. I have chosen to design a building for the kayak association and visitor facilities. The wetland will reintroduce a habitat for local wildlife. The inquiry enters the discourse of how architecture can work as an intersection where the city meets a natural phenomenon. The phenomenon in this case is the river Klarälven, where it flows through Karlstad and meets the lake Vänern. The proposal deals with spaces as well as species. City and wilderness. Building, dwelling and living along a river means to be in constant negotiation with water. A river is plastic force that runs through the landscape, changing with the season and the climate. We have learned to tame our rivers and drain our wetlands with the help of machines and technological interventions, and many have slowly become domesticized and controlled by humans. Except for the mountain areas, 80% of the wetlands in Sweden are managed by hydrological systems. Damaged wetlands means a loss of habitat for many species, and display other reduced ecological functions like CO2 storage , rinsing water, flood prevention and biological production.1 Technical interventions such as timber industry and hydropower technology have greatly reduced the wild animal kingdom during the past 200 years.     Knutepunktutvikling i spenningsfeltet mellom statleg styring og lokale planprosessar : Ein studie av jernbanesektoren som aktør i knutepunktutvikling

    Denne masteroppgåva er ei undersøking av korleis jernbanesektoren fungerer som aktør i knutepunktutvikling i samspel med kommunane. Bakgrunnen for temaet er at det har vore store konfliktar mellom Jernbaneverket/Bane NOR og kommunane i ei rekke byar i InterCityområdet på Austlandet. Oppgåva er gjennomført ved å sjå nærare på ulike sider ved knutepunktutvikling frå eit teoretisk perspektiv, ved å analysera styringsdokument i jernbanesektoren og ved ein caseanalyse av planprosessen for ny stasjonsplassering på Hamar. I oppgåva er knutepunktutvikling definert som fotgjengarvennleg byutvikling med utgangspunkt i knutepunkt for kollektivtransport. Den teoretiske delen av oppgåva viser at vellukka knutepunktutvikling krev at prosjekta både sikrar effektive transportløysingar og at knutepunkta utviklast til attraktive stader. Dette krev eit tett samarbeid mellom transportstyresmaktene og bystyresmaktene, samstundes som interessene dei representerer kan dra i ulike retningar. Konseptet «utvekslingssoner» viser korleis aktørane gjennom forhandlingar og kompromiss kan sikra framdrift i slike vanskelege planprosessar, utan å mista den demokratiske deltakinga av syne. New Public Management (NPM) har dei seinare åra medverka til å endra aktørbiletet i planlegginga, særleg med jernbanereforma. NPM medfører at kostnadseffektivitet blir prioritert framfor breiare samfunnsmål, og gjer at utfordringane med samordning og samarbeid kan forsterkast. Studien viser at det gjev meirverdi å undersøka dagens utfordringar med knutepunktutvikling med ei slik tverrfagleg tilnærming. Den empiriske delen av oppgåva viser at jernbanesektoren er styrt på ein måte som gjer at han ikkje fungerer optimalt når han skal samspela med kommunane om knutepunktutvikling. Dette skuldast at det verken i styringsdokumenta eller i praksis er teke på alvor at vellukka knutepunktutvikling er avhengig av at ein klarer å balansera transport- og stadfunksjonane, og at kommunen har ei viktig lokalpolitisk og samordnande rolle i planlegginga. Caseanalysen viser at dette kan medføra at planprosessen stoppar opp. I ein slik situasjon kan konflikt ha ei positiv rolle ved at det politiserer viktige planspørsmål og medverkar til å pressa fram betre løysingar, slik det har skjedd på Hamar. Utfordringa framover er å finna ut korleis konfliktar kan løysast tidlegare i planprosessen.submittedVersio
