Exploring the sense of smell in shared digital book reading: An experiment

    Get PDF
Shared book reading during early childhood contributes to children's development in many important ways. This small-scale experiment, the first of its kind in the emerging field of olfactory research, explores whether reading a digital book with accompanying smell stimulation has a measurable effect on children's engagement, vocabulary acquisition, story comprehension, and overall interest in reading and smell. The study was conducted with 65 4- and 5-year-old Norwegian-speaking children, attending ECEC centers. Olfactory stimulation did not produce higher scores on post-experiment vocabulary and story comprehension, only the control variables of gender and prior vocabulary knowledge significantly predicted vocabulary and story comprehension scores. However, children's engagement was higher for stories with accompanying olfactory stimulation. Future research could integrate odour release into the reading device to not disrupt the reading process, and more reliably test the hypothesis that olfactory stimulation is conducive to reading engagement and learning outcomes.publishedVersio

The Art of Linking ESG Scores to Stock Return and Volatility

Masteroppgave(MSc) in Master of Science in Sustainable Finance, Handelshøyskolen BI, 2024This study investigates the impact of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) scores on the financial performance of US stocks from 2010 to 2022. By analyzing data sourced from Refinitiv, Bloomberg, Compustat, and CRSP, we examine the relationship between ESG scores, stock returns, and risk metrics. The methodology involves Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and Fixed Effects (FE) regression models to control for various variables and address issues like mul-ticollinearity and heteroskedasticity. The study struggles to reveal a statistically significant correlation between ESG scores and stock returns. When analyzed separately, individual ESG pillars did not show significant correlations with stock returns either. Additionally, ESG scores were found to negatively correlate with volatility, suggest-ing that firms with higher ESG scores exhibit reduced risk. However, this correlation does not extend to superior risk-adjusted returns, as evidenced by the Sharpe Ratio analysis. The study highlights the complexity and mixed results in the relationship between ESG scores and financial performance, underscoring the need for standardization in ESG rating methodologies to reduce investment uncertainty and enhance the utility of ESG scores in investment strategies. These findings contribute to the ongoing discourse on ESG investing, pro-viding insights for investors and policymakers in the sustainable fi-nance domain

Unraveling the Influence of Job Autonomy on Affective Commitment and Turnover Intentions: Exploring the Role of Person-Job Fit in Healthcare Professionals

Masteroppgave(MSc) in Master of Science in Leadership and Organizational Psychology - Handelshøyskolen BI, 2024Autonomy is a pivotal topic in organizational psychology, with profound implications for organizations and employees. Drawing on existing research from a person-job fit perspective, this study explores the daily fluctuations in job autonomy and its impact on turnover intentions and affective commitment among healthcare professionals. We propose a moderation model, positing that the influence of daily autonomy on turnover intentions and affective commitment is moderated by person-job fit. Data were collected from 49 full-time employees holding various nursing positions at Østfold Hospital Trust, using an experience sampling methodology (ESM) to examine the hypothesized moderation model. The findings confirmed that job autonomy positively affects affective commitment. However, the hypothesis that person-job fit moderates this relationship was not supported. Additionally, the direct effect of job autonomy on turnover intentions and the moderating role of person-job fit was found to be non-significant, leading to the rejection of these hypotheses. The non-significant findings could be attributed mainly to the low sample size, and organizations should prioritize job autonomy to eliminate the possibility of negative work outcomes. This study contributes to existing research on job autonomy, turnover intentions, and affective commitment, enhancing our understanding of their implications at both organizational and individual levels. Future research should refine our proposed model and employ longitudinal studies or mixed methods to explore how these relationships evolve over time and across different conditions. Such exploration can provide insights into the long-term impacts and sustainability of interventions to improve job autonomy

Accounting for Individual-Specific Heterogeneity in Intergenerational Income Mobility

    Get PDF
This paper proposes a fully nonparametric model to investigate the dynamics of intergenerational income mobility for discrete outcomes. In our model, an individual’s income class probabilities depend on parental income in a manner that accommodates nonlinearities and interactions among various individual and parental characteristics, including race, education, and parental age at childbearing. Consequently, we offer a generalization of Markov chain mobility models. We employ kernel techniques from machine learning and further regularization for estimating this highly flexible model. Utilizing data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID), we find that race and parental education play significant roles in determining the influence of parental income on children’s economic prospects

Where Does the Time Go? Auditors’ Commercial Effort, Professional Effort, and Audit Quality

    Get PDF
Audit theory and regulation assumes that auditors’ commercial motivation threatens audit quality. In this registered report, we use data from two Big Four firms in the Netherlands and provide empirical evidence on the relation between auditors’ commercial motivation and (1) compensation, (2) total audit effort, and (3) audit quality. We proxy commercial motivation as the time that individual auditors report allocating to commercial activities. We hypothesize that auditors’ commercial effort is positively related to compensation and we find mixed support. Next, we hypothesize that auditors’ commercial effort is negatively related to the audit effort but we find no support. Turning to audit quality, we hypothesize a negative direct relation between auditors’ commercial effort and audit quality but we find no support. We also predict a positive indirect relation in which auditors’ commercial effort increases quality control reliance leading to higher audit quality. We find some support for this hypothesis but only when we use technical consultations to proxy for quality control. Auditors with greater commercial effort maintain quality because they rely more on technical consultations. In sum, our study challenges the assumption that auditors’ commercial effort threatens audit quality and questions the need for additional regulation to constrain commercial motivation.publishedVersio

Overcoming Financial Barriers for Sustainable Development: A Focus on Tanzanian SMEs

    Get PDF
Masteroppgave (MSc) in Master of Science in Entrepreneurship and Innovation - Handelshøyskolen BI, 2024This thesis investigates the financial barriers faced by Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Tanzania and explores potential mitigation strategies to foster sustainable economic growth. Employing a multiple-case study approach with a grounded research methodology, the study provides an in-depth analysis of the complexities within the Tanzanian financial landscape. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and surveys with various stakeholders, including SME owners, financial institutions, government officials, and non-governmental organizations. The research identified four main categories of barriers affecting SME financing in Tanzania: financial access, cultural, knowledge, and regulatory barriers. Financial access barriers include limited visibility of companies and a mismatch between the investment needs of SMEs and the available funding amounts. Cultural challenges encompass trust issues and a preference for informal financing methods. Knowledge barriers highlight a significant gap in financial literacy and business acumen among SME owners. Regulatory barriers include bureaucratic procedures and unfriendly tax policies that hinder SME growth and formalization. The study's grounded models illustrate the dynamic interplay between these barriers, creating a cyclical effect that perpetuates financial exclusion. To disrupt this cycle, the research proposes several mitigation strategies: establishing new funding mechanisms such as venture capital firms, corporate venture capital arms, crowdfunding platforms, and angel networks; enhancing financial literacy and business education through partnerships between universities and business professionals; implementing regulatory reforms, including the establishment of a National Board for Impact Investors and SME-friendly policies; and improving investor-investee connectivity through one-stop centers. By addressing these barriers and implementing the proposed strategies, stakeholders can create a more conducive environment for SME growth, ultimately contributing to sustainable economic development in Tanzania. This research offers valuable insights for policymakers, financial institutions, and entrepreneurs, providing a roadmap for overcoming the systemic barriers to SME financing and fostering a more inclusive and dynamic economic landscape
