Masteroppgave(MSc) in Master of Science in Strategic Marketing Management - Handelshøyskolen BI, 2024While brand authenticity is emerging as a driving force influencing consumer behavior (Gilmore & Pine, 2007), beauty brands still struggle with perceptions of inauthenticity (Smith et al., 2021). This study aims to understand how beauty brands should frame their product offerings to increase brand authenticity and explores different message strategies to different beauty product types to examine its effect on brand authenticity. A 2 (message frame: Self-enhancement vs. Self-expression) X 2 (product type: Conventional vs. Natural) between-subjects randomized experimental study was conducted to address the proposed hypotheses. A total of 204 participants were recruited for this study. The study found significant main effects of message framing on brand authenticity, indicating that a self-expression framing was more efficient in increasing perceptions of brand authenticity. Moreover, significant main effects were found between product type and brand authenticity, whereas brands offering conventional brands were perceived as more authentic. The study also revealed interaction effects between message framing and product type on perceived brand authenticity. Specifically, brand authenticity was increased when natural products were framed as self-expression and conventional products were framed as self-enhancement. The findings further indicated that this relationship was moderated by health consciousness and self-authenticity, such that consumers with a higher health consciousness and a higher self-authenticity showed higher perceived authenticity for brands offering natural products, and lower perceived authenticity for brands offering conventional products. Lastly, results showed that brand authenticity plays a mediating role in the relationship between message framing and product type on behavioral outcomes, such that higher perceived brand authenticity led to higher purchase intention and word-of-mouth. Based on these results, I derive several theoretical and practical implications that are valuable for both academicians and practitioners

Inequalities in Privacy Cynicism: An Intersectional Analysis of Agency Constraints

A growing body of research highlights a trend toward widespread attitudes of privacy cynicism, apathy, and resignation among Internet users. In this work, we extend these discussions by concentrating on the concept of user agency. Specifically, we examine how five types of structural constraints — interpersonal, cultural, technological, economic, and political — restrict user agency and contribute to the prevalence of privacy cynicism as a common response. Drawing on critical data studies and adopting an intersectional lens, we demonstrate how these constraints disproportionately impact various social groups unequally, leading to a disparate distribution of agency and privacy cynicism. Furthermore, we contend that the sense of powerlessness engendered by excessive constraints on user agency can, in turn, exacerbate user vulnerability to such constraints, potentially initiating a vicious cycle of disempowerment. The article enriches the field of privacy research by linking the traditionally individual-focused and psychological dimensions of privacy with critical surveillance studies and by proposing potential interventions to mitigate privacy cynicism.Inequalities in Privacy Cynicism: An Intersectional Analysis of Agency ConstraintspublishedVersio

    Medarbeidersamtalen

The consumption expenditure response to unemployment: Evidence from Norwegian households

    Get PDF
This paper examines heterogeneity in household income and consumption responses to unemployment, using granular administrative tax data from Norway. On average, unemployment results in a significant, lasting income reduction, accompanied by a decrease in consumption expenditures of between one-third to one-half of the income loss. We find that households with greater liquid assets at the outset experience less of a decline in consumption, whereas those with higher levels of debt encounter a more substantial decrease. Notably, also the interaction of liquid assets and debt holdings matters for the consumption response. While households with larger initial liquid asset holdings on average respond less, the analyses show that this is not the case among households that simultaneously hold substantial amounts of debt, thus adding to a more nuanced view of the importance of household heterogeneity for economic outcomes. Furthermore, our investigation into heterogeneity across family composition and child age uncovers distinct patterns in consumption responses, highlighting the varied impacts of unemployment. Lastly, we find that spending patterns, as indicated by the marginal propensity to consume (MPC), become more pronounced during recessions.publishedVersio

    Get PDF

Trading wage jobs for dreams: the interplay between entry modes into self-employment and the duration of subsequent self-employment stints

    Get PDF
Wage employees enter self-employment either directly or in a staged manner and may subsequently undertake multiple stints at self-employment. Extant research on the relationship between entry modes and the persistence and outcomes of self-employment is inconclusive. This study investigates the relationship between wage employees’ initial mode of entry into self-employment and the duration of the subsequent first two stints of self-employment.publishedVersio

Measuring the menu, not the food: “psychometric” data may instead measure “lingometrics” (and miss its greatest potential)

    Get PDF
This is a review of a range of empirical studies that use digital text algorithms to predict and model response patterns from humans to Likert-scale items, using texts only as inputs. The studies show that statistics used in construct validation is predictable on sample and individual levels, that this happens across languages and cultures, and that the relationship between variables are often semantic instead of empirical. That is, the relationships among variables are given a priori and evidently computable as such. We explain this by replacing the idea of “nomological networks” with “semantic networks” to designate computable relationships between abstract concepts. Understanding constructs as nodes in semantic networks makes it clear why psychological research has produced constant average explained variance at 42% since 1956. Together, these findings shed new light on the formidable capability of human minds to operate with fast and intersubjectively similar semantic processing. Our review identifies a categorical error present in much psychological research, measuring representations instead of the purportedly represented. We discuss how this has grave consequences for the empirical truth in research using traditional psychometric methods.publishedVersio

How do fluctuations in interest rate differentials during macroeconomic announcements affect the response of the Norwegian Krone (NOK), in contrast to the Danish Krone (DKK), which maintains stability through its fixed exchange rate to the Euro?

    Get PDF
Masteroppgave(MSc) in Master of Science in Business, Finance - Handelshøyskolen BI, 2024This thesis examines how the Norwegian Krone (NOK) and Danish Krone (DKK) exchange rates respond to interest rate movements during macroeconomic announcements. Norway operates under a flexible exchange rate regime, while Denmark maintains a fixed exchange rate policy pegged to the Euro. By analyzing high-frequency exchange rate data and 2-year interest rate swaps from 2014-2024, the study aims to understand the reaction of these currencies to interest rate changes around key releases. The findings indicate a notable difference in the responses of the NOK and the DKK to interest rate movements, reflecting the differing exchange rate regimes. Also, the recent substantial financial growth of Novo Nordisk has compelled the Danish central bank to take measures to stabilize the DKK against the Euro

Multisensory experiences and technology in the context of wine experiences

    Get PDF
In the context of the experience economy, multisensory experiences have certainly received growing attention and interest from both researchers and practitioners to guide the design and management of experiences. Importantly, multisensory experiences are increasingly influenced and transformed by a number of technologies such as those in extended reality (e.g. AR, VR), IoTs, Web 3.0, and multisensory technologies. Here, we present a brief review of how multisensory experiences and these new technologies are shaping the way in which we understand, conceive, and design wine experiences. Whilst many examples of multisensory experiences and wine can be found in research, most of the technology-related examples are observed in industry initiatives. As such, more academic research will be needed to clarify when and how specific technologies might be the right experiential tools in the context of wine experience design. Our article ends with some ethical reflections about the implications of both multisensory experiences and technology.publishedVersio
