The Role of Private Equity in IPOs during COVID-19: A comparative analysis of the markets in USA and Europe
Masteroppgave(MSc) in Master of Science in Business, Finance - Handelshøyskolen BI, 2024This study investigates the influence of Private Equity backing on IPO underpricing and long-term performance before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe and the US from 2009 to 2024. Using a dataset of 5,255 IPOs, we find that PE-backed IPOs exhibit lower underpricing and underperformance than VC-backed IPOs, though not when compared to non-sponsored IPOs. IPOs during the pandemic show higher underpricing and underperformance. We conclude that while PE-backed IPOs perform better than VC-backed ones, the pandemic significantly impacted IPO performance across all categories
Taylor Rules with Endogenous Regimes
The Fed’s policy rule switches during the different phases of the business cycle. This finding is established using a dynamic mixture model to estimate regime-dependent Taylor-type rules on US quarterly data from 1960 to 2021. Instead of exogenously partitioning the data based on tenures of the Fed chairs, a Bayesian framework is introduced in order to endogenously select timing and number of regimes in a data-driven way. This agnostic approach favors a partitioning of the data based on two regimes related to business cycle phases. Estimated policy rule coefficients differ in two important ways over the two regimes: the degree of gradualism is substantially higher during normal times than in recessionary periods while the output gap coefficient is higher in the recessionary regime than in the normal one. The estimate of the inflation coefficient largely satisfies the Taylor principle in both regimes. The results are substantially reinforced when using real-time data
Privacy Resignation, Apathy, and Cynicism: Introduction to a Special Theme
The growing trend of collecting data about individuals to track past actions and infer future attitudes and behaviors has fueled popular and scholarly interest in the erosion of privacy. Recent shifts in technologies around machine learning and artificial intelligence have intensified these concerns. This editorial introduces the articles in the special theme on digital resignation and privacy cynicism: concepts developed in the past decade to explain the growing powerlessness individuals feel in relation to their digital privacy even as they continue to experience consternation over the collection and use of their personal information. The papers in this special theme engage and extend existing research on these topics. The original articles and commentaries pose theoretical and practical questions related to the ways people confront the powerful institutional forces that increasingly shape many aspects of the information environment. They employ several methodologies and theoretical perspectives and extend the range of geographic, political, cultural, and institutional contexts in which privacy cynicism and digital resignation can be identified and examined. In addition to contextualizing these contributions, this editorial maps a range of related concepts including digital resignation, privacy cynicism, privacy apathy, surveillance realism, privacy fatigue, and privacy helplessness. It concludes by identifying key themes across the papers in this collection and provides directions for future research.Privacy Resignation, Apathy, and Cynicism: Introduction to a Special ThemepublishedVersio
Susceptibility to online misinformation: A systematic meta-analysis of demographic and psychological factors
Nearly five billion people use and receive news through social media and there is widespread concern about the negative consequences of misinformation on social media (e.g., election interference, vaccine hesitancy). Despite a burgeoning body of research on misinformation, it remains largely unclear who is susceptible to misinformation and why. To address this, we conducted a systematic individual participant data meta-analysis covering 256,337 unique choices made by 11,561 US-based participants across 31 experiments. Our meta-analysis reveals the impact of key demographic and psychological factors on online misinformation veracity judgments. We also disentangle the ability to discern between true and false news (discrimination ability) from response bias, that is, the tendency to label news as either true (true-news bias) or false (false-news bias). Across all studies, participants were well above-chance accurate for both true (68.51%) and false (67.24%) news headlines. We find that older age, higher analytical thinking skills, and identifying as a Democrat are associated with higher discrimination ability. Additionally, older age and higher analytical thinking skills are associated with a false-news bias (caution). In contrast, ideological congruency (alignment of participants’ ideology with news), motivated reflection (higher analytical thinking skills being associated with a greater congruency effect), and self-reported familiarity with news are associated with a true-news bias (naïvety). We also find that experiments on MTurk show higher discrimination ability than those on Lucid. Displaying sources alongside news headlines is associated with improved discrimination ability, with Republicans benefiting more from source display. Our results provide critical insights that can help inform the design of targeted interventions.publishedVersio
Winners and Losers from Property Taxation
This paper studies how down-payment requirements for house purchases affect households’ saving and housing decisions, and the implications for macroeconomic policy. Using a quantitative model, we find that households not only postpone homeownership when the down-payment constraint is higher, but they also delay when they start saving for the house. We show analytically that this result holds under standard assumptions for households’ earnings and preferences. The changes to saving and portfolio choices affect the distribution of liquidity-constrained households, which in turn impacts aggregate responses to policy. Specifically, the cash-flow channel of monetary policy is reduced, and it becomes increasingly important to direct fiscal transfers at low-income households to achieve the largest consumption response. We also find that a stricter down-payment requirement is associated with substantial welfare costs, especially for high-income households
Down-payment requirements: Implications for portfolio choice and consumption
This paper considers optimal taxation of housing capital. To this end, we employ a life-cycle model calibrated to the U.S. economy, where asset holdings and labor productivity vary across households, and tax reforms lead to changes in house and rental prices, wages, and interest rates. We find that the optimal property tax in the long run is considerably higher than today. A higher property tax leads to a reallocation from housing to business capital, which in turn increases wages and reduces interest rates. These equilibrium effects allow for an improved consumption smoothing over the life cycle, due to progressive earnings taxes and lower borrowing costs. However, most current households would incur substantial welfare losses from an implementation of a higher property tax, since house prices fall, and a majority
own their home. Hence, when accounting for transitional dynamics, it is not clear that a higher property tax is feasible or preferred
Spinoffs Impact on the Parent Company
Masteroppgave(MSc) in Master of Science in Business, Finance - Handelshøyskolen BI, 2024This study examines the impact of corporate spinoffs on the stock prices of parent
companies in the short and long-term, analyzing a dataset of 99 American spinoffs
from 2000 to 2020. An event study reveals significant positive abnormal returns
around the event dates, indicating initial market optimism. However, longitudinal
regression analysis shows that these early gains do not lead to sustained long-term
benefits. The findings suggests that while spinoffs initially boost shareholder
value, their long-term effects remain inconclusive. This study highlights the
complexity of spinoff and their varying impacts on parent companies
