The development of a calling by hospitality employees during an extreme event

    Get PDF
This study explores the development of a calling by hospitality employees during extreme events. Despite the importance of a calling in the hospitality industry, the process of its cultivation has not been explored. Using event system theory and research on sensegiving and sensemaking, we explore the evolution of employee perceptions of an extreme event and the impact of this evolution on the development of a calling. Our interviews with hotel employees who worked during a lockdown due to COVID-19 demonstrate that extreme events can stimulate and develop a calling among employees, particularly when their perceptions of the event converge. This study contributes to the literature on hospitality and organizational behavior by revealing that an extreme event can shape, transmit, and communalize a calling among employees.publishedVersio

Tied islands: The role of organizational members in knowledge transfer across strategic projects

Transferring knowledge across strategic projects is challenging. This study investigates how informal practices of members of the parent organization shape the transfer of knowledge across strategic projects. This was addressed through an in-depth case study of strategic projects in an innovation trajectory of a large public organization aiming to accelerate to transition towards circular construction. We identified five disabling practices: shaming and blaming, disconnecting, holding onto the department and project boundaries, fostering one-way relationships and avoiding internal conflict. Furthermore, we identified three enabling practices: supporting circular projects, sharing similarities across projects and integral visioning. The results contribute to the cross-project knowledge transfer literature by showing how members of partner organizations can enable or disable knowledge transfer across strategic projects. Furthermore, the results contribute to the strategic project literature by illuminating the importance of informal practices of members of the parent organization.publishedVersio

Masteroppgave(MSc) in Master of Science in Business, Finance - Handelshøyskolen BI, 2024This thesis investigates whether current housing prices in Norway, and its four major cities—Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim, and Stavanger—reflect fundamental values. Using an error correction model, we analyze the short-term and long-term impacts of key economic variables such as total wage income, bank’s lending rates, unemployment rates, building permits, and household expectations on housing prices. Our findings indicate significant regional variations, with Oslo showing the slowest adjustment speed towards a long-run equilibrium. The results also highlight the substantial influence of the bank’s lending rate and unemployment on housing prices. For instance, a 1% increase in the bank’s lending rate leads to short-run housing price decreases of 2.28% in Norway, 2.93% in Bergen, 2.79% in Trondheim, and 2.41% in Stavanger, compared to only 1.33% in Oslo. Unemployment significantly impacts housing prices in all regions except Oslo. Although it is difficult to determine with great certainty whether housing prices are overvalued based on the fundamental variables tested for in our analysis, our data suggests that current housing price trends are unsustainable across all regions, particularly in Oslo, which exhibits significant deviations from these fundamental values

Joint Search over the Life Cycle

This paper provides novel evidence that the added worker effect – labor force entry upon spousal job loss – is substantially stronger for young than old households. Using a life cycle model of two-member households in a frictional labor market, we study whether this age-dependency is driven by heterogeneous needs for or avail ability of spousal insurance. Our framework endogenizes asset and human capital accumulation, as well as arrival rates of job offers, and is diciplined against U.S. micro data. By means of counterfactuals, we find a strong complementarity across both margins: A large added worker effect requires both high spousal earnings potential (human capital) relative to the primary earner and limited access to other means of self insurance (assets). Together, both margins can account for the observed age differential in the added worker effect. The model predicts substantial crowding out of spousal labor supply by unemployment benefit extensions among young households, in line with their stronger need for spousal insurance

Can ChatGPT replace humans in crisis communication? The effects of AI-mediated crisis communication on stakeholder satisfaction and responsibility attribution

    Get PDF
Imagine a world where chatbots are the first responders to crises, efficiently addressing concerns and providing crucial information. ChatGPT has demonstrated the capability of GenAI (Generative Artificial Intelligence)-powered chatbots when deployed to answer crisis-related questions in a timely and cost-efficient manner, thus replacing humans in crisis communication. However, public reactions to such messages remain unknown. To address this problem, this study recruited participants (N1 = 399, N2 = 189, and N3 = 121) and conducted two online vignette experiments and a qualitative survey. The results suggest that, when organizations fail to handle crisis-related requests, stakeholders exhibit higher satisfaction and lower responsibility attribution to chatbots providing instructing (vs. adjusting) information, as they are perceived to be more competent. However, when organizations satisfy requests, chatbots that provide adjusting (vs. instructing information) lead to higher satisfaction and lower responsibility attribution due to higher perceived competence. The second experiment involving a public emergency crisis scenario reveals that, regardless of the information provided (instructing or adjusting), stakeholders exhibit greater satisfaction and positive attitudes toward high-competence (vs. low-competence) chatbots. The qualitative study further confirms the experimental findings and offers insights to improve crisis chatbots. These findings contribute to the literature by extending situational crisis communication theory to nonhuman touchpoints and providing a deeper understanding of using chatbots in crisis communication through the lens of machine heuristics. The study also offers practical guidance for organizations to strategically integrate chatbots and human agents in crisis management based on context.publishedVersio

The strategic role of owners in firm growth: Contextualizing ownership competence in private firms

    Get PDF
We integrate the emerging literature on the strategic role of firm owners in firms’ value creation with Penrosean growth theory to investigate how and under what conditions two experience-based competences among owners—matching competence and governance competence—influence firm growth. Employing a longitudinal sample of 2,509 owner-managed German firms, we find a positive relationship between owners’ experience-based competences and firm growth. Further, we find that in family firms, the positive relationship between owners’ experience-based governance competence and firm growth is weaker and that both experience-based competences matter more in younger firms compared to older firms. Our findings make important contributions to research on strategic ownership and Penrosean growth theory. The strategic role of owners in firm growth: Contextualizing ownership competence in private firmspublishedVersio

Avoiding the Traps of a Laissez-Faire Leader: Employee Consequences and the Moderating Role of Self-Compassion

    Get PDF
Masteroppgave(MSc) in Master of Science in Leadership and Organizational Psychology - Handelshøyskolen BI, 2024Research on laissez-faire leadership has mainly focused on the characteristics of leaders and their impact on subordinates. However, there is a need for a more employee-centric approach to determine when and for whom laissez-faire leadership is more challenging. This study aims to address this gap by examining individual differences among employees. Specifically, this study investigates the relationship between laissez-faire leadership and employees’ intrinsic motivation, work performance, and intention to quit, with a particular focus on the moderating role of self-compassion. We hypothesized that laissez-faire leadership would negatively affect intrinsic motivation and work performance, and positively influence intention to quit. Further, we proposed that self-compassion would mitigate these negative effects. Employing a cross-sectional design, we analyzed data from 220 participants in the Norwegian labor market. Our first hypothesis was supported. Further, in line with our predictions, self-compassion moderated the relationship between laissez-faire leadership and work performance, such that high levels of laissez-faire leadership and low levels of self-compassion were associated with lower performance scores. However, self-compassion was not significant with intrinsic motivation and intention to quit. To our knowledge, this is the first study to explore this relationship, thereby expanding the literature in the field. We hope our research highlights the importance of self-compassion in the workplace and encourages the development of strategies to help employees
