The Impact of Restaurant Rating Systems on Chefs: A Discourse Analysis of the Film Boiling Point
Restaurant rating systems are widely regarded as key indicators of quality and prestige in the gastronomy sector, playing a crucial role in shaping the careers of both restaurants and chefs. While these systems promote the maintenance of high standards, they also impose significant psychological and professional burdens on chefs, including stress, burnout, and creative constraints. This study examines the impact of restaurant rating systems on chefs through a Foucauldian discourse analysis of Philip Barantini’s 2021 film Boiling Point. The analysis identifies five key themes: external control and pressure, kitchen hierarchy and authority, customer expectations and psychological toll, work-life balance and emotional exhaustion, and creative constraints imposed by rating systems. The findings reveal that while rating systems enhance a chef’s professional status, they simultaneously function as mechanisms of continuous surveillance, undermining professional autonomy and psychological well-being. The study employs thematic coding and visual analysis to deepen the discourse analysis and illustrate how restaurant rating systems perpetuate systemic pressures on chefs. The results underscore the need for a reevaluation of these systems to ensure a more sustainable and supportive professional environment for culinary professionals

The Adaptive Markets Hypothesis is a theory that argues market efficiency can change over time. This hypothesis attributes changes in the level of efficiency to many factors, primarily market conditions. The EMH argues that markets are always efficient and, therefore, investors cannot achieve excessive returns by relying on historical data. Recent studies have shown that markets are not always efficient and that investors sometimes exhibit irrational behavior. The Adaptive Markets Hypothesis was developed in parallel with these criticisms and argues that markets are dynamic and can exhibit varying levels of efficiency over time depending on different factors. This thesis examines the validity of the Adaptive Market Hypothesis in the foreign exchange markets of Newly Industrializing Countries. Furthermore, the relationship between return predictability and market conditions is investigated specifically in the Turkish foreign exchange market. In this regard, the foreign exchange markets of the countries in question against the US Dollar, monthly closing data for the period January 2000 – December 2023, were analyzed using AutomaticPortmanteau and Wild-Bootstrap Automatic Variance Ratio tests. These tests were applied to subsamples obtained using the rolling window method to examine the change over time in the degree of predictability of market returns. Then, Johansen cointegration and Granger causality analyses were used to examine the relationship between return predictability and market conditions. According to the findings obtained as a result of the analyses, the foreign exchange markets of the Newly Industrialized Countries have an efficient structure in some periods and an inefficient structure in other periods. This situation demonstrates that the Adaptive Markets Hypothesis is valid. Furthermore, according to the analysis results examined specifically for the Turkish foreign exchange market, the results of the Johansen cointegration test show that the series move together in the long term. The results of the Granger causality test indicate that some variables are related to the degree of efficiency in the Turkish foreign exchange market, while others are not. In this context, the variables related to the activity level of the Turkish foreign exchange market are the foreign trade balance, the dollar index, Brent crude oil price, inflation, and the policy interest rate. The consumer confidence index, gold price, and BIST100 have been identified as unrelated variables. These results indicate that changes in the Turkish foreign exchange market activity are shaped primarily by fundamental macroeconomic dynamics such as price stability, external balance, and global cost factors, rather than consumer perceptions and capital market returns
Electricity Demand Forecasting Using Deep Polynomial Neural Networks and Gene Expression Programming During COVID-19 Pandemic
The power-generation mix of future grids will be quite diversified with the ever-increasing share of renewable energy technologies. Therefore, the prediction of electricity demand will become crucial for resource optimization and grid stability. Machine learning- and artificial intelligence-based methods are widely studied by researchers to tackle the demand forecasting problem. However, since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, new challenges have surfaced for forecasting research. In such a short amount of time, significant shifts have emerged in electricity demand trends, making it apparent that the pandemic and the possibility of similar crises in the future have escalated the complexity of energy management problems. Motivated by the circumstances, this research presents an hour-ahead and day-ahead electricity demand forecasting benchmark using Deep Polynomial Neural Networks (DNN) and Gene Expression Programming (GEP) methods. The DNN and GEP algorithms utilize on-site electricity consumption data collected from a university hospital for over two years with a temporal granularity of 15-minute intervals. Quarter-hourly meteorological, calendar, and daily COVID-19 data, including new cases and cumulative cases divided by four restriction levels, were also considered. These datasets are used not only to predict the electricity demand but also to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the electricity consumption of the hospital. The hour-ahead and day-ahead nRMSE results show that the DNN outperforms the GEP by 8.27% and 14.32%, respectively. For the computational times, the DNN appears to be much faster than the GEP by 82.83% and 78.56% in the hour-ahead and day-ahead forecasting, respectively.Scientific Project Unit of Adana Alparslan Turkescedil; Science and Technology University [24103005]This research was funded by Scientific Project Unit of Adana Alparslan Turke & scedil; Science and Technology University grant number 24103005

Randomised controlled study on the effects of pilates exercises in soccer: Comparing mat and reformer methods on physical and technical performance
This study was conducted to determine and compare the effects of reformer pilates (RP) and mat pilates (MP) exercises on soccer players' physical parameters and technical skills. Thirty voluntary participants were randomly assigned to either RP group (n = 10; age = 20.60 +/- 1.65), MP group (n = 10; age = 19.40 +/- 1.35) and control group (CG) (n = 10; age = 20.10 +/- 1.15). Technical and physical performance tests were performed. In the RP group counter movement jump (CMJ), standing broad jump (SBJ), single leg triple hop right-left, balance right-left leg, flexibility, 10-20m sprint, german agility (GA), speed dribbling (SPD), loughborough soccer passing (LSPT), lobbed passing right food, lobbed passing total measurement results showed a statistically significant difference between pre-test and post-test mean values (p 0.05). Between-group comparisons revealed superior improvements in GA, LSPT, and single-leg triple hop right-left in the RP group compared to the MP group. Based on these findings, coaches and sports performance specialists may enhance athletes' physical performance and technical skills by incorporating Pilates exercises (particularly RP) into training programs.Ministry of Health, Czech Republic; [65269705]This research was funded by the Ministry of Health, Czech Republic; conceptual development of research organization (FNBr, 65269705). Physicochemical, texture, color, fatty acid, volatile compounds, and sensory properties of peanut-based halva
In this study, halva samples were prepared using conventional methods by replacing sesame tahini with peanut tahini (at 50 % and 100 % levels), and were subsequently analyzed for their chemical composition, textural hardness, color parameters (L*, a*, b*), fatty acid profile, volatile aroma compounds, and sensory attributes. Peanut tahini incorporation significantly influenced the chemical composition of halva, leading to increased protein content (p < 0.05) and altered fatty acid composition, with higher levels of oleic and linoleic acids. The hardness of the samples revealed an increase in peanut-based halva, correlating with the protein content. Color measurements showed a decrease in lightness (L*) and an increase in redness (a*) and yellowness (b*) in peanut tahini samples. Peanut-based halva exhibited distinct aroma profiles with enhanced roasted and nutty notes. Sensory evaluation showed consumer acceptance, with peanut-based halva scoring favorably in taste and texture attributes. The study highlights the potential of peanut tahini as a viable alternative to sesame tahini in halva production, contributing to product diversification and promoting the use of locally produced ingredients. Further research is recommended to explore the shelf-life and consumer market acceptance of peanut-based halva. © 2025 Elsevier Inc.Osmaniye Korkut Ata Üniversitesi, OKU, (OKÜBAP-2021-PT3-020)Osmaniye Korkut Ata Üniversitesi, OK
APPLYING MCDM METHODS FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLE SELECTION: A COMPARATIVE STUDY BETWEEN CRADIS AND PIV METHODS
The global automotive industry is undergoing a significant transformation towards electric vehicles to significantly reduce carbon emissions and contribute to a greener planet. The proliferation of EVs is not only a trend but also an urgent solution to address climate change. In the context of a world striving for sustainable development, selecting the right electric vehicle becomes a crucial decision for consumers as one of the urgent solutions. This study employs two methods, CRADIS and PIV, to rank ten electric vehicle models and identify the optimal choice. Each vehicle is characterized by seven criteria, and the weighting of these criteria is determined using four methods: Entropy, LOPCOW, WENSLO, and combined weighting. This research also compares the CRADIS and PIV methods based on various similarity measures such as SPE (Spearman's coefficient), WPSE (Weighted Spearman's coefficient), RS (Rank Similarity coefficient), and KE (Kendall’s coefficient). The results indicate a slight advantage of the PIV method over the CRADIS method. © 2025, Institute for research and design in industry. All rights reserved
Social learning in organic and conventional farming: a comparative analysis
This study revealed and comparatively analyzed the importance of social learning in the learning process in organic and conventional agricultural enterprises. The primary data obtained from a questionnaire survey conducted with 120 farmers from Gaziantep center and surrounding districts according to the Simple Random Sampling Method constituted the main material of this study. To be able to apply various parametric tests, the data were tested for conformity to normal distribution and homogeneity of variances, and it was determined that the data did not show normal distribution. Since parametric tests cannot be used in data that are not suitable for normal distribution, Chisquare and Mann-Whitney U test were used to see whether there is a significant difference in the answers given by farmers to the questions according to the status of organic production or not. According to the findings, farmers practicing conventional farming are more in touch with their neighbours about production techniques and strategies than their organic farming counterparts. This study revealed that there are significant differences in knowledge acquisition and social learning processes between organic and conventional farmers in Gaziantep province. The findings support the hypothesis that organic farmers may tend to receive information from more formal and perhaps more modern sources. The results of the study suggested that local and national agricultural policies should adopt a diversified and dynamic approach in line with the changing knowledge needs of farmers.Osmaniye Korkut Ata University Scientific Research Projects Unit [OKBAP_2022_PT2_021]This article is based on the master's thesis titled Social Learning in Organic Agriculture and Conventional Agriculture: A Comparative Analysis is derived from his master's thesis. M-OPARA: A Modified Approach to the OPARA Method
The process of selecting the optimal option among multiple conflicting criteria is a fundamental task across various disciplines and is known as multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM). This study seeks to enhance the Objective Pairwise Adjusted Ratio Analysis (OPARA) method, which is limited by its inability to rank alternatives when any criterion within the decision matrix assumes a zero value. To address this limitation, an additional transformation step is introduced, resulting in the development of the M-OPARA method. The effectiveness of the M-OPARA method has been rigorously assessed through diverse case studies, incorporating different sets of criterion weights derived from 20 scenarios, and by comparing its performance against several MCDM techniques, including OPARA, PIV, ROV, SAW, WASPAS, MARCOS, and FUCA. The findings indicate that the M-OPARA method achieves high accuracy in ranking alternatives and successfully mitigates the constraints of the OPARA method. The methodological advancements introduced by M-OPARA constitute a substantial improvement in the rank ability of alternatives within decision-making frameworks. This novel approach facilitates more precise and dependable decision-making in practice, equipping decision-makers with a more flexible and robust analytical tool. © 2025 Regional Association for Security and crisis management. Fear of the Other as Electoral Strategies in Italy and Hungary
European politics has recently witnessed an increasing trend towards securitisation of migration. There are various aspects of the issue, however, this study specifically concentrates on how anti-immigration political parties construct fear of the Other-namely, asylum seekers, refugees and/or migrants-as part of their electoral strategy to gain more support in European elections. Drawing upon the premises and strategies of critical discourse analysis, this study analyses anti-immigration discourses delivered particularly by the leaders of League in Italy and Fidesz-KNDP in Hungary during the electioneering period of the 2019 European Parliament elections. It uses online data from 1 January 2019 to 31 May 2019, and mainly argues that the parties in question discursively construct the fear of the Other in the public discourse and public mind as a means to achieve success in elections. By doing so, this study bridges a gap in the literature by revealing which type of threat is more dominant in the discourses of the parties in question.State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) of Switzerland under the Swiss Government Excellence ScholarshipsThis study was supported by the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) of Switzerland under the Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships
