Branding beyond prejudice: Navigating multicultural marketplaces for consumer well-being

    No full text
Today's marketplaces are increasingly multicultural as more individuals negotiate complex cultural identities. Brands play a role in materializing individual identities—however, little is known about how culture-based brand appeals might affect consumers' identity dynamics, positively or negatively. The paper provides a framework and a model that examines the interaction between three different types of multicultural marketplaces (assimilation, separation, and mutual integration) and different voices that brands might use in their cultural appeals (Branding Ignorance, Branding Tolerance, and Branding Engagement). The model identifies how these different voices (strategies) might exacerbate consumer vulnerabilities in different types of marketplaces and provides recommendations for how to use culture-based branding appeals in a benevolent manner.nonouirechercheInternationa

Aid, Remittances, Medical Brain Drain and Child Mortality: Evidence Using Inter and Intra-Country Data.

    No full text
This article analyses the respective impact of aid, remittances and medical brain drain (MBD) on child mortality using panel and cross-country quintile-level data on respectively 84 and 46 developing countries. Our results show that remittances reduce child mortality while MBD increases it. Health aid also significantly reduces child mortality but its impact is less robust than the impact of remittances. Remittances seem to be more effective in reducing mortality for children belonging to households from the upper classes, whereas neither a pro-poor nor anti-poor effect is found for health aid.nonouirechercheinternationa

Efficient determination of the k most vital edges for the minimum spanning tree problem

    No full text
We study in this paper the problem of finding in a graph a subset of k edges whose deletion causes the largest increase in the weight of a minimum spanning tree. We propose for this problem an explicit enumeration algorithm whose complexity, when compared to the current best algorithm, is better for general k but very slightly worse for fixed k. More interestingly, unlike in the previous algorithms, we can easily adapt our algorithm so as to transform it into an implicit enumeration algorithm based on a branch and bound scheme. We also propose a mixed integer programming formulation for this problem. Computational results show a clear superiority of the implicit enumeration algorithm both over the explicit enumeration algorithm and the mixed integer program.nonouirechercheInternationa

Quantitative stochastic homogenization of elliptic equations in nondivergence form

    No full text
We introduce a new method for studying stochastic homogenization of elliptic equations in nondivergence form. The main application is an algebraic error estimate, asserting that deviations from the homogenized limit are at most proportional to a power of the microscopic length scale, assuming a finite range of dependence. The results are new even for linear equations.nonnonouirechercheinternationa

La construction des problèmes publics en Europe : émergence, formulation et mise en instrument

    No full text

The glassy phase of complex branching Brownian motion

    No full text
In this paper, we study complex valued branching Brownian motion in the so-called glassy phase, or also called phase II. In this context, we prove a limit theorem for the complex partition function hence confirming a conjecture formulated by Lacoin and the last two authors in a previous paper on complex Gaussian multiplicative chaos. We will show that the limiting partition function can be expressed as a product of a Gaussian random variable, mainly due to the windings of the phase, and a stable transform of the so called derivative martingale, mainly due to the clustering of the modulus. The proof relies on the fine description of the extremal process available in the branching Brownian motion context.nonnonouirechercheInternationa

Nonlinear stability in Lp for a confined system of charged particles

    No full text
We prove the nonlinear stability in Lp, with 1p21\le p\le 2, of particular steady solutions of the Vlasov--Poisson system for charged particles in the whole space R6 . Our main tool is a functional associated to the relative entropy or Casimir-energy functional.nonnonouirechercheInternationa

A discussion on Bayesian analysis : Selecting Noninformative Priors

    No full text
In this note, following the publication of Seaman III, Seaman Jr and Stamey(2012) we re ect on an aspect of Bayesian statistics, namely the selection of a priordensity on the parameters. In some cases Bayesian data analysis remains stable underdi erent noninformative choices of prior distributions. As discussed in [18], there maybe unintended consequences on the posterior distribution for some functions of interestof the choice of a noninformative prior and according to the authors, this is a problemthat \is often ignored in applications of Bayesian inference" (p.77). The authors focusedon four examples and analyzed each of them for several particular choices of prior. Here,we consider a new these examples and discuss the Bayesian processing of their modelsassuming di erent prior choices while the results are based on xed data sets. Theconclusion of our research leads us to infer a stability of the posterior distributions ofthe parameters and to state that the e ect of the noninformative prior is essentiallynegligible.nonnonouirechercheInternationa

Max-Min optimization problem for Variable Annuities pricing

    No full text
In this paper, we study the valuation of variable annuities for an insurer. We concentrate on two types of these contracts, namely guaranteed minimum death benefits and guaranteed minimum living benefits that allow the insured to withdraw money from the associated account. Here, the price of variable annuities corresponds to a fee, fixed at the beginning of the contract, that is continuously taken from the associated account. We use a utility indifference approach to determine the indifference fee rate. We focus on the worst case for the insurer, assuming that the insured makes the withdrawals that minimize the expected utility of the insurer. To compute this indifference fee rate, we link the utility maximization in the worst case for the insurer to a sequence of maximization and minimization problems that can be computed recursively. This allows to provide an optimal investment strategy for the insurer when the insured follows the worst withdrawal strategy and to compute the indifference fee. We finally explain how to approximate these quantities via the previous results and give numerical illustrations of parameter sensitivity.nonnonouirechercheInternationa
