Impact of Air Pollution on Health: A Neighbourhood Level Study Led by Grassroot Women Leaders in Rural Jharkhand, India

    No full text
Jharkhand state in India has high levels of air pollution posing severe health and environmental hazards especially in mining districts. Ten grassroots women leaders undertook community-participatory research to track air quality in their neighbourhoods. Through this research, they assessed people’s perceptions on neighbourhood sources of air pollution, health impacts and responsiveness of the government health system to ailments linked to that air pollution. Their findings reveal poor air quality in places frequented by women, children, and vulnerable populations and further highlights adverse health impacts and the inadequate capacity of the government health system. This research enabled the women to initiate dialogues with different stakeholders on severity of the issue and corrective action needed, leading to initiation of measures to tackle air pollution at the neighbourhood level

    L’histoire d’un projet communautaire inuit porteur d’initiatives d’autochtonisation de l’éducation

    No full text
In Nunavik, indigenization in education takes place in a historical context marked by compulsory school attendance and recent settlement. This text will describe three initiatives that go back to a school project whose partners were the communities of Ivujivik, Puvirnituq and the University of Quebec in Abitibi-Témiscamingue (UQAT). First, at the request of the main stakeholders, a history PhD student examined a project for local management of schooling in Ivujivik and Puvirnituq between 1950 and 1990. The concepts of institutionalization and resistance were used to explain how the two communities lived through this effort of local empowerment. We then describe a second initiative: a project to share the knowledge collected for the thesis. The aim was to return the research findings to the northern school by explaining them in Inuktitut and using culturally adapted tools. Finally, we conclude by presenting an ongoing initiative: a project to develop a curriculum for teaching Inuktitut. This last project is considered a case of an adaptation of a tool coming from Western European culture for the purpose of improving the educational attainment and school success of young people

Moral Injury and the Implicit or Explicit Language of Sexual Violence during Warfare in Fifteenth-Century Flemish Chronicles

    No full text
In late medieval Flemish chronicles, sexual violence is frequently depicted as a consequence of war. Chroniclers distinguished between rape as a crime of passion and rape by armed coercion, reflecting broader societal perceptions of sexual violence. These accounts often served to demonize enemies, portraying them as morally corrupt, but they also reveal anxieties about leadership failures and moral transgressions within one’s own ranks that led to plundering, harassment, and ravishment. Both Burgundian and urban chroniclers engaged with this discourse: some highlighted ducal anti-rape policies to reinforce Burgundian legitimacy, while others exposed the contradictions between official prohibitions and the realities of war. Additionally, the portrayal of sexual violence intersects with the concept of moral injury, as chroniclers—both explicitly and implicitly—documented the violation of deeply held ideals about just warfare. As such, chroniclers constructed selective memories of sexual violence during warfare and revolts.

Dinah between Rape and Seduction: Maarten van Heemskerck and Renaissance Attitudes towards Gender and Conflict

    No full text
In 1569, Gerard de Jode published in Antwerp Maarten van Heemskerck’s Old Testament print series about Dinah, daughter of Jacob. In these images, Heemskerck reinterprets the Old Testament narrative from a deeply misogynistic standpoint, disputing the Biblical claim that Shechem raped Dinah. This article traces the sporadic representations of the episode in prints and paintings and examines visual strategies that emphasize male vulnerability over the suffering of the female victim. Heemskerck’s artistic choices are then evaluated in the context of certain exegetical differences between Martin Luther and John Calvin.
