Does Boardroom Ethnic Diversity Shape ESG Performance? Insights from the US Banking Sector

    No full text
This research investigates the relationship between ethnic diversity in the boardroom and the ESG performance of US banks during the 2016-2021 period. To this aim, we implement the 2-step system GMM estimation technique, which addresses endogeneity issues that have posed challenges in many studies. Our findings indicate that boardroom ethnic diversity negatively influences ESG performance. Moreover, in a nonlinear analysis, we provide evidence of a U-shaped relationship between boardroom ethnic diversity and the ESG performance of banks. These results remain robust when, instead of ESG performance, we examine the social and corporate governance performance of banks. We also demonstrate that the impact of boardroom ethnic heterogeneity on ESG performance varies with bank size. Furthermore, we reveal that during the pandemic, the previously negative impact of ethnically diverse directors on ESG performance shifts and ultimately becomes positive. Consequently, our conclusions serve as an important source of information to lawmakers and regulators and enrich the corporate governance research concerning the nexus between board characteristics and ESG performance

Caring for Images: Anonymization as Feminist Sensory Accompaniment

    No full text
The expanding criminalization of political participation and dissent in the United States, especially in connection to non-citizens, warrants the use of creative experiments through which we can reorient how we apprehend, depict, and/or document marginalized groups. Drawing on my involvement in a campaign advanced by a Massachusetts immigrant rights collective and ethnographic research on the biometric industry, I interrogate how to creatively engage dilemmas of visibility and recognition experienced by illegalized groups engaged in dissenting practices. I examine the potential of AI-generated anonymization as a refusal of recognition politics. How might the use of computational anonymization disrupt how we apprehend images of the illegalized? In what ways can such anonymization techniques be complementary to anti-carceral imaginaries? And what kinds of compromises, if any, can we consent to when pursuing such “creative-critical” experiments in connection to surveilled and criminalized groups (Alvarez, Dattatreyan, and Shankar 2021)? This creative experiment, grounded on liberatory abolitionist commitments, argues for the productive potential of computational anonymization as a temporary and imperfect experiment in fugitivity and refusal. Conceived as a channel for sensory accompaniment, it aspires to motivate a shift in journalistic, ethnographic, and other documentation practices engaging the struggles of illegalized and otherwise criminalized groups

On Assemblages and Surveillantization: Thinking and Rethinking Surveillance Theory

    No full text
It has been over a quarter of a century since I wrote The Surveillant Assemblage with my colleague Richard Ericson. In it, we advance a theoretical model for understanding key aspects of surveillance, aiming to move beyond portraying it as a form of totalitarian “Big Brother” or Foucauldian panopticism. Inspired by Gilles Deleuze and others, we detailed how surveillance operates by integrating heterogeneous practices and technologies, contributing to the production, combination, and movement of data flows. Among other dynamics, we accentuated fluidity and processes of emergence, integration, and the proliferation of data doubles. Scholars in fields as different as media studies, criminology, anthropology, critical race studies, data science, gender studies, architecture, law, and sociology have applied the model or debated its relevance to a wide range of empirical settings. But no model is fully comprehensive, and developments in surveillance now move rapidly. As such, it has been invigorating to revisit this article and rethink how to adequately theorize surveillance. My comments here set out to do three things. First, I use this opportunity to briefly introduce the notion of “surveillantization,” which I see as a valuable way to conceive of some of the “big picture” developments and trajectories in surveillance. Second, I return to the surveillant assemblage to offer a few thoughts on the commentators’ essays in this forum. The concluding section is a coda that provides background on writing the original surveillant assemblage article. It offers a glimpse into one small part of the early history of surveillance studies

    No full text
Calls to decolonize postsecondary education invite reflection on how disciplines grounded in Western intellectual traditions might engage Indigenous pedagogical approaches with care and responsibility. In considering the integration of Indigenous pedagogies into the teaching of Western philosophy at the university level, we are confronted with questions of practice, reflexivity, and humility, particularly given philosophy’s long-standing emphasis on rationality, Logos, and abstraction. Through a narrative and reflective orientation, Western philosophy is situated within its historical and conceptual context, while attention is given to the ways these commitments have supported critical inquiry as well as contributed to exclusion. Drawing on examples from philosophy teaching in a francophone minority context in Canada, we examine pedagogical practices that emphasize relationality, dialogue, embodied learning, engagement with place, and multiple ways of knowing. Rather than seeking to decolonize Western philosophy as a disciplinary tradition, emphasis is placed on the decolonization of pedagogical practices through openness to other epistemologies, critical self-examination, and sustained relational engagement. Such an approach is offered as a meaningful pathway toward reconciliation and more inclusive philosophy education.

    No full text
Language mutates. It no longer merely accompanies transformations of identity : it inscribes them, shapes them, and makes them possible. In a corpus of narratives where the human becomes unstable and the boundaries between the living and the technological blur, speech is never a given. Reprogrammed, circumvented, or displaced into other forms of exchange, it affects not only communication but also perception, thought, and the world itself. This article examines three trajectories of language mutation – codification, erasure, and cognitive reconfiguration – and asks what remains of our ways of being when language, in turn, begins to falter

    No full text
The graphic novel Verts (2024) by Patrick Lacan and Marion Besançon, and the short story “The Last Nine Days on Earth” (2020) by Daryl Gregory, depict a world reshaped by a vegetal epidemic. Placing these works in dialogue allows me to examine key science-fiction topoi from the queer perspectives of their characters. In these narratives, the mutant matters less than mutation itself, and kinships open toward nonhuman Others in order to sustain a queer futurity. In the face of crisis, popular culture thus appears to be developing a posthuman aesthetic grounded in a renewed understanding of pandemic experience

Adoption des BASI-coins en Afrique. Une analyse SWOT

    No full text
The goal of this paper is to discuss the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the decentralized digital currencies in Africa, a region that serves as an incubator for innovations in the decentralized finance sector, but remains somewhat excluded from the field of academic research on these same issues. In addition to providing a comprehensive overview of the current state of the cryptocurrency market (particularly with regard to the categories and underlying technologies), this article relies on a SWOT analysis that draws some lessons and long-term perspectives while respecting the diversity of local and international concerns. It emerges that the popularity of the BASI-coins is built on a triple illusion: that of disintermediation, that of security and that of independence: miners remain essential, and oligopolies are being reconstituted in the cryptosphere which, from this point of view, does not differ from the traditional finance. In addition, even if the macro-financial framework of African countries seems de facto to lend itself to their adoption, it should be noted that their implementation requires addressing several challenges: both in terms of infrastructure (electricity/Internet access) and technology as well as institutional. Moreover, BASI-coins could compete with (future) sovereign digital currencies (Govcoins), and their widespread adoption could destabilize the financial systems due to pressure on foreign exchange reserves
