Well-being Practices, Rhythms, and Commitments: Perspectives from Early-Career Teachers in British Columbia, Canada

    No full text
One of the ways to address stress and burnout in the teaching profession is by paying attention to teacher well-being. Seligman (2011) argued that there are five pillars of emotional health: positive emotions, engagement, positive relationships, meaning, and accomplishment, also known as the PERMA theory of well-being. This article details an action-research study that examined what PERMA-related practices, rhythms, and commitments teachers in British Columbia believed were the most influential in contributing to their overall wellness. Eight initial participants, who taught full-time, had at least three years of experience, and generally enjoyed their profession, were recruited from a public school and an independent school in British Columbia, Canada. Initial participants completed a quantitative well-being assessment known as the PERMA-Profiler, to identify a group of three teachers who would be appropriate for participation in the follow-up, qualitative, one-on-one interviews. Content analysis of teacher perspectives revealed an emphasis on the actions related to three key themes: the power of relationships, practicing gratitude through reflection, and intentionality surrounding time investment and allocation. This article concludes with implications for how to help teachers flourish, describing various practices, rhythms, and commitments that are beneficial for educators’ pursuits of emotional wellness

Readiness and Use of Big Data Analytics in Selected Canadian Higher Education Institutions

    No full text
The rapid evolution of information technologies has driven the exponential growth of big data, creating opportunities to leverage data analytics across sectors. In higher education, Big Data Analytics (BDA) holds promise for improving decision-making, enhancing student outcomes, and driving institutional efficiency. However, its implementation remains limited due to technological, organizational, and environmental challenges. This study examines the readiness and use of BDA within selected Canadian higher education institutions, focusing on Southwest Ontario. Utilizing the Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE) framework, the research adopts a qualitative approach, drawing on semi-structured interviews with 10 academic and administrative staff from selected universities in Southwestern Ontario. The result identifies several barriers to BDA readiness and use, including a fragmented data landscape, integration challenges, and resource constraints. The study emphasizes the need for strategic investments in technological infrastructure, leadership engagement, and updated policies to improve BDA adoption.

The Emergence of the Placial-Technical: Digital Placemaking as Information Practice

    No full text
In an era of ubiquitous computing and generative AI, our experience of place is increasingly mediated by digital technologies, creating hybrid environments where physical and virtual interactions converge. While fields like media and urban studies have explored this through the concept of ‘digital placemaking’—the use of digital media to create a sense of place—this phenomenon has received limited attention within information studies. This paper addresses this gap by proposing a new conceptual framework, termed the ‘placial-technical,’ which refines the traditional socio-technical perspective to specifically analyze the mutual shaping of place, information, and technology. Using this lens, we argue that digital placemaking should be understood as a form of information practice, encompassing the socially situated ways individuals seek, use, and share information to construct meaning about their surroundings.Drawing on literature from human geography, media studies, and Human Computer Interaction, we trace the evolution of placemaking concepts and technologies. We then analyze digital placemaking through the dual processes of perception (how information inputs shape our understanding of place) and representation (how we create informational outputs to depict place), focusing on the growing influence of algorithms and generative AI. This synthesis reveals research gaps and offers implications for information studies.

Leadership Perspectives on Emotional Labour in Large Urban Public Libraries

    No full text
The demands of public library work have intensified, placing strain on both frontline staff and the leaders responsible for supporting them. Emotional labour—the regulation of emotions required in daily work—remains underexplored in library and information sciences research, particularly regarding how leaders manage their own emotional labour while supporting frontline staff. This study examines what library leaders know about emotional labour and how that knowledge influences their leadership and support for staff. Interviews with 27 leaders from three large Canadian public libraries reveal that leaders play a crucial role as middle managers, balancing staff well-being with organizational expectations. As authentic leaders, they strive to build meaningful emotional connections with their teams—often successfully—but at a personal cost. Despite their dedication, they have limited power to address systemic challenges such as precarious work, chronic understaffing, and the increasing pressure of societal issues, all of which intensify emotional labour demands. Addressing these challenges requires a collective effort. Libraries must adopt a proactive approach to emotional labour, emphasizing leadership development, shared responsibility, and comprehensive organizational support.

Pedagogical Approaches and Teaching Strategies Used in Nursing Education to Teach Academic Writing: A Scoping Review

    No full text
Academic writing is considered an essential skill in post-secondary education in general and in nursing specifically (Mitchell et al., 2020). The importance of writing for future nurses is reflected in the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN) National Nursing Education Framework’s standards. This national consensus-based framework outlines the expectations of undergraduate nursing programs and graduates according to the six domains of knowledge, research skills and critical inquiry, nursing practice, communication and collaboration, professionalism, and leadership (CASN, 2022). Academic writing is embedded in each of these domains, as it provides students with a venue to share factual knowledge, demonstrate critical thinking, and make important connections between theory and practice (Naber & Wyatt, 2014). A scoping review of research on the pedagogical approaches and teaching strategies used to teach academic writing in nursing education yielded 12 studies. Findings show a range of approaches with varying degrees of success. Further research is needed on how best to guide and assess students’ writing.

A tale of two ponds, Newfoundland, Canada

    No full text
Bathymetric surveys of two small lakes in Newfoundland, located in different environments and separated by hundreds of kilometres, were carried out using two different survey methods—ground penetrating radar (GPR) and sound navigation and ranging (sonar). The different structures of these two disparate ponds were found to be related to the differing geology and degrees of anthropogenic influence at the two locations. In addition, the study outlined the strengths and limitations of the two survey methods. Tipping’s Pond, on the outskirts of the town of Corner Brook in western Newfoundland, is a sinkhole in a popular recreation area. It is roughly square with an area of 1.6 km2 and is slightly salty, making it largely impenetrable by radar. Bathymetric surveys with a salinity-impervious fish-finder sonar system revealed Tipping’s Pond to be bowl-shaped and more than 25 m deep in the centre. Grassy Pond, 3 km inland from the Trans-Canada Highway in eastern Newfoundland, is within an undeveloped area accessible by snowmobile in the winter. It has an irregular, elongated shape 1.2 km2 in area and is very fresh. As well as determining the bathymetry, GPR was able to determine the depth of a soft sediment layer overlying till, and to image structures within the soft sediments. The top of the sediment layer is undulating and shallow (<2.9 m deep) whereas the base of the sediments overlies sub-basins about 8 m deep.

Revisions to geological unit names in New Brunswick, Canada, to address culturally offensive or inappropriate nomenclature

    No full text
Recent amendments to the North American Stratigraphic Code enable the renaming of offensive or inappropriate unit names. Although the Province of New Brunswick has commenced the identification and renaming of culturally inappropriate geographic features, the use of offensive toponyms presents a problem in the naming of geological units. Names of eight geological units and structures in New Brunswick are culturally inappropriate or offensive. Following the guidelines in the amended Stratigraphic Code, replacement names for these problematic units and structures are proposed herein.
