Leveraging Foundation Model Adapters to Enable Robust and Semantic Underwater Exploration

    Get PDF
Conference proceedings at https://ceur-ws.org/Vol-3975/.This position paper presents a framework for intelligent underwater exploration by marrying foundation models (FMs) with multi‑frequency echosounder data. Echosounder data capture backscattered acoustic signals across a range of frequencies, providing rich insights into underwater environments by exploiting the frequency‑dependent scattering properties of underwater targets. However, their heterogeneity and complex structure complicate analysis. To address these challenges, the paper introduces four key innovations aimed at improving echosounder data analysis under dynamic ocean conditions: (1) aligning multi‑frequency echosounder data with FMs via lightweight FM adapters, (2) enabling continual adaptation to temporal distribution shifts in dynamic marine environments, (3) designing semantic tokenizers that preserve spatial structures, and (4) effectively leveraging sparse annotations to minimize dependence on costly labeled data. For each research direction, we map recent artificial intelligence (AI) methodologies to marine acoustic challenges and outline concrete pathways for technology transfer. Preliminary experiments demonstrate that a Vision Transformer (ViT), pretrained on natural images in a self-supervised manner, can segment sandeel schools from multi‑frequency echosounder data without task‑specific retraining. These results substantiate the proposed framework and illustrate the potential of cross‑disciplinary AI methods for ecologically informative underwater exploration

Automating the TinyML Pipeline: From Model Compression to Edge Deployment

Deploying machine learning on resource-constrained devices such as microcontrollers, especially in harsh environments (e.g., the arctic) presents significant challenges. This thesis explores solving these challenges in the framework of TinyMLOps, focusing on enabling live model updates and predicting inference latency on STM micro controllers. A method for seamless runtime weight updates via direct memory modification was implemented and we developed an automated workflow using the STM32EdgeAI REST API for benchmarking and code generation. Experiments confirmed successful live updates and achieved high accuracy in predicting single-layer network latency based on architecture (R2 > 0.98) and multi-layer networks up to 3 layers (R2 > 0.89). While predicting multi-layer network (more than 3 layers) latency requires further refinement, this work provides practical contributions to TinyMLOps, facilitating remote maintenance and establishing a foundation for hardware-aware model optimisation on edge devices

A Simulated UAV System for Greenhouse Gas Emission Source Localization Using Dispersion Modeling

    Get PDF
Accurate and efficient localization of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission sources is an important challenge in environmental monitoring. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) offer a flexible platform for this task, but efficient sampling and localization remain challenging, particularly under resource constraints such as limited flight time and onboard processing capabilities. This thesis presents a simulated system for UAV-based GHG emission source localization in a two-dimensional, cell-based environment. The system has two main components: an emission source localization component and a path planner. The localization component applies a Gaussian plume dispersion model to estimate source locations from simulated UAV concentration measurements. The path planner, based on Dijkstra’s algorithm, accounts for wind direction in its cost function to produce efficient sampling paths that reduce wind resistance and overall travel cost. The system is evaluated through a series of simulation experiments. Localization accuracy is assessed under various sampling densities, while the efficiency of the path planner is evaluated by comparing the wind-aware paths to those generated without accounting for wind direction. Results show that the localization method performs reliably with a moderate sampling density, where the success rate of locating a source within a 10 m2 area is 0.74 when samples are 116 m apart. Additionally, the path planner produces slightly more efficient paths, showing a 5% gain when using a cost function as an efficiency metric

Interaction in Clinical Consultations with Chronically Ill Patients: Cultural Perspectives

    Get PDF
Chronic musculoskeletal pain presents significant challenges for patients, clinicians, and healthcare systems, particularly due to the lack of clear prognosis, diagnosis, and etiological explanations, which increases uncertainty in consultations. This dissertation explores interactions in consultations with this patient group at a specialized rehabilitation clinic in Norway. The goal is to gain insight into how these encounters unfold and are experienced by both patients and clinicians. The study uses qualitative methods, combining observations of consultations with follow-up interviews with patients and clinicians. Through reflexive thematic analysis, conversation analysis, and narrative analysis, it examines how uncertainty shapes these interactions. The study identifies four explicit reassurance elements that clinicians use to alleviate patients' worry. While these elements aim to reassure patients, they also highlight the complexities of the consultation process. Clinicians often rely on biomedical knowledge that they themselves find reassuring, but patients respond ambivalently - they seek biomedical confirmation yet reject findings that do not align with their own pain experience. A key challenge is that although patients regularly experience pain, it is often absent during the clinical examination. Patients attempt to account for this discrepancy but are frequently dismissed by clinicians who maintain a positive "no-problem" attitude, leading to a lack of shared understanding. Additionally, clinicians encourage patients to accept their pain, but patients may perceive this as giving up hope for improvement. The study finds that when medical solutions are absent, the clinician’s ability to balance hope and acceptance plays a crucial role in shaping the patient's experience of the consultation. The thesis also demonstrates how structural and cultural factors influence consultations. While patients may seem to accept biomedical authority, they challenge it indirectly through questions, skepticism, and resistance. Clinicians should be attentive to these subtle expressions of dissatisfaction and adjust their communication accordingly to strengthen patient-centered care.

Pharmacodynamic and electrophysiological properties of drugs used for cardiovascular support during hypothermia

    Get PDF
Background: Hypothermia, defined as core temperature <35°C, is a lethal condition due to the risk of cardiovascular dysfunction and lethal arrhythmias. Despite this, treatment guidelines are inconsistent on pharmacological interventions. Basic research suggests diminished cardiovascular effects of β-agonist during hypothermia. The phosphodiesterase-3 (PDE3)-inhibitors milrinone and levosimendan, have both shown ability to alleviate cardiovascular dysfunction during rewarming in vivo. In order to implement safe use of such drugs in hypothermic patients, we aimed to investigate the pharmacodynamic properties of PDE-inhibitors milrinone, levosimendan, amrinone and pentoxifylline. As such pharmacological agents can cause arrhythmias in normothermia, we also investigated impact of the most promising drugs on cardiac electrophysiology. This is crucial to avoid risk for additional proarrhythmic drug effects, as reduction of core temperature alone is associated with increased risk for ventricular arrhythmias. Methods: Pharmacodynamic properties were assessed by using recombinant PDE3- and 5- enzymes, inside-out vesicles and washed erythrocytes. Inhibition of PDE3-activity, PDE5- activity, cAMP-efflux, cGMP-efflux and ability to reach the intracellular space was assessed at temperatures 37°C - 20°C. Electrophysiological effects on human induced stem cell derived cardiomyocytes were assessed for action potentials and contractility. Results: Intact pharmacodynamic properties for increasing cAMP were found for all drugs. Pentoxifylline showed increased IC50 for PDE5-inhibition at 20°C. Milrinone showed increased IC50 for inhibition of cGMP-efflux at 24°C and 20°C. Milrinone and isoprenaline increased triangulation, a proarrhythmic marker, during hypothermia. Discussion: PDE-inhibitors remain promising agents in treatment of hypothermia-induced cardiovascular dysfunction as they show preserved pharmacodynamics down to 20°C in vitro. Milrinone and the β-agonist isoprenaline should be used with great caution in hypothermic patients, as they increase an already high risk of lethal arrhythmias. Accordingly, levosimendan emerged as the most promising treatment alternative.

Piloting an Augmented Reality Exergame for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities

    Get PDF
In this paper we propose a new approach for increasing physical activity (PA) in individuals with intellectual disabilities (IDs), using augmented reality exergames to increase adherence and motivation. The game encourages PA by showing virtual elements through a mobile phone camera. The elements only appeared if the player moved in the real world. The game was specifically designed for people with ID and was evaluated in a pilot test involving 17 users of a day care center for four weeks. Results demonstrate sustained engagement with the app and increased usage of smartphones among participants. Moreover, most users reported using the app for PA for the first time, underscoring its potential to attract individuals who may not have previously engaged in such activities. These findings suggest that exergames can be an effective intervention for PA promotion and for improving the overall well-being of individuals with IDs

Towards Migraine-Event Prediction Using Continuous Long-Term Biometric Sensor Data

    Get PDF
Migraine is a common chronic headache disorder characterizsed by episodes of moderate to severe headaches, resulting in a large personal- and societal burden. To address this, we implemented a mobile app solution aimed at enhancing continuous data collection and increasing data coverage for the Empatica E4 biometric sensor device. Our ultimate goal is to use this system in a future migraine event prediction system. In our initial study, three participants wore the E4 device for eight days and were interviewed about their experience. Main user-experience feedback included the need for more frequent reminders, more detailed information on the collected data, and improvements with respects to connectivity issues. Regarding the app interface, participants recommended adding more diagnostic tools and statistics, enhancing the “look and feel” design, clarifying explanations of variables, providing information on data usage, and supporting additional sensor devices
