Dynamique de la transitivité en basque souletin : économie interne, contacts de langue et / ou nouvelle conception de l'agent ?
International audienceAt the present time in Basque Souletine dialect, there are two different ways to construct more than thirty bivalent verbs and retain the same meaning. They have a double case and indicial marking with change of the auxiliary. They are rather low verbs in a semantic scale of transitivity. Constructions with izan "to be" are rather used by older speakers, while younger Bascophones tend to use constructions with *edün "to have". For some of these verbs, however, both constructions are found in old texts, sometimes even within the writings of the same author. The conditioning of a linguistic variation and of a linguistic change is generally complex and difficult to update. The postulated evolution could be due to : ― the internal economy of the language, analogical attraction, since the two structures in competition already co-exist; substitution due to the weak functional output of construction with izan, memory-saving without loss of the distinction of the two arguments ;― language contact : intra-linguistic contact between the dialect and Unified Basque for the construction of some verbs, and contact between languages, French/Basque (indirect loan translations) ;― or, this being the most daring assumption, due to an external factor like the evolution of the way of life and thought in which the argument having to do with experience is seen more and more like an agent. The difficulty of this research is found in the necessity of validating these potential factors and then of evaluating the respective weight of them.
DSaren barneko zenbait ordena kontu
The order of most modifiers within DPs is tightly fixed in Basque. While adjectives must be placed after the nominal head and before demonstratives, cardinal quantifiers are placed before nouns. Besides, stacked descriptive adjectives appear to have a non-marked order, which is the mirror image of the one found in languages where adjectives follow nouns (Sproat & Shih 1988; Scott 2002). Taking into account previous typological studies (Greenberg 1963, Dryer 1992), the Basque data are analyzed following Cinque's (1999, 2005) proposal of a universal structure of merge of the DP, in a way already employed in similar studies in other languages (Fassi Fehri 1999, Aboh 2004, Shlonsky 2004).Euskarako DSen barneko osagai batzuen arteko ordena franko gogorki finkatua da. Adjektiboak gehienean bederen izenaren eskuin aldean, erakusleen aitzinean, kokatzen dira, zenbatzaileek, aldiz, izenaren ezker aldean egon behar dutelarik. Adjektiboak, bestalde, metatzen direnean, halako ordena markatugabe batean agertzen dira, eta kasu honetan oposaketak agerian ematea erraza ez bada ere, ordena markatugabe hori da adjektiboak izenaren ezker aldean dauzkaten hizkuntzetakoaren alderantzizkoa (Sproat & Shih 1988; Scott 2002), hots, haren mirail-irudia. Tipologiako datuak kontuan izanik, ordena kontu horiek ikertzen dira artikuluan, Kayneren (1994) antisimetriaren bidetik, eta DSaren funtzio egituraren hierarkia unibertsal batetik (Cinque 1999) abiatuz. Erakustera ematen da aipatu datu horiek egokiro azal daitezkeela DS barneko mugimenduak sintagmak bata besteari eratxikirik espezifikatzaileetarik iganaraziz obratzen badira, hala nola proposatua izan baita beste zenbait hizkuntzarentzat (Fassi Fehri 1999; Cinque 2005; Aboh 2004; Shlonsky 2004)
A Derivational Approach to the Focus Structure
I present a derivational analysis of the construal of the focus structure of thesentence. I propose that the [+F] feature is an optional formal feature that can be assignedto multiple tokens of the numeration. Hence, the focus structure is derived via Merge(creation of a set) in a strictly compositional way. I argue that with the adoption of thistheory we can circumvent many of the empirical and theoretical shortcomings of previousNuclear Stress Rule-based approaches, and, furthermore, that it allows us to account forsplit focus constructions (answers to multiple Wh questions) in a natural way
Basque adjectives and the functional structure of the noun phrase
To appear in J. I. Hualde & J. A. Lakarra (eds.), Essays in Honor of Larry Trask, Bilbao, Supplements of ASJU.The article proposes that Basque DP-internal adjectives occupy the head position, not the specifier position, in the hierarchy of functional projections proposed in Cinque (1994) and Scott (2002). The proposal has three immediate consequences: (a) the analysis of adjectives as specifiers is not universal and is independent of the existence of the said hierarchy; (b) adjectival modification allows for specifier-head variation; and (c) word-order variation in the DP-field depends largely on the head-parameter, contrary to Kayne's antisymmetry view. The proposal that adjectives are heads is not novel in the literature (cf. Abney 1987), but it is presented here as an explicit argument for the validity of the head-parameter and against antisymmetry
The Basque linguistic atlas, in the process of publication, which follows the majority of presupposed of traditional linguistics, brings some methodological innovations however, in particular in the presentation of the data: response lists, indices, small size charts with the lemmatized forms and not with the collected answers, on paper medium and CD-Romanian. These innovations are justified by the public, that we wish larger than that of the only specialists. They allow also the best highlighted of dialectal fragmentation by showing various cases of figure on the charts whose semiology will be exposed through various examples. An illustration starting from the chart 'quail' will show that this cartography does not exhaust the information stored in the data base.
Basque has been in intense contact with the Latin and Romance languages throughout the last two thousand years. Those uninterrupted relationships have inevitably left marks on the lexicon, some evident, others veiled. This article proposes a lexicostatistical approach of Latin and Romance loanwords in Basque. Three types of corpuses are tested: fundamental lexicon, popular speech and literary writing. Even if the loanwords of Latin and Romance origin are dominant in the (theoretical) total lexicon, the native Basque words remain majority in all the samples of language tested here
