No full textThis PhD thesis deals with eight issues in the History of 19th-Century Basque Grammaticography. The work undertaken is within the area of Linguistic Historiography; and more exactly, it deals with the history of grammatical ideas about the Basque language.This dissertation has two main parts: Chapters 1 through 5 examine the work of several 19th-century bascologists (Astarloa, Humboldt, Darrigol, Bonarparte, and van Eys). Chapters 6 through 8 introduce the analyses that some grammatical topics received throughout the Basque grammatical tradition, mainly in the 19th century (the identification of the article, the so-called "unique verb" theory, and verb-object agreement).Doktorego tesi hau XIX. mendeko euskal gramatikagintzaren historiari buruzko zortzi ikerlanez osaturik dago eta Hizkuntzalaritzaren Historiografiaren esparruan kokatzen da, zehazkiago euskararen inguruko gramatika-ideien historian.Ikerketa honek bi atal nagusi ditu: alde batetik, 1-5 kapituluetan XIX. mendeko zenbait euskalariren lanak aztertzen dira (Astarloa, Humboldt, Darrigol, Bonaparte eta van Eys) eta, bestetik, 6-8 kapituluetan gramatika-gai batzuek euskal tradizioan zehar, batik bat XIX. mendean zehar, izan zituzten analisiak aurkezten dira (artikuluaren identifikazioa, “aditz bakarraren” teoria eta objektu-komunztadura)
Suffixe adverbial -ka et constructions verbales intransitives imperfectives : une question d'affinité
No full textThis paper focuses on the Basque adverbial suffix -ka when it suffixes to verbal periphrasis. The suffix, whose principal meaning is ‘‘in a repeated way'', is present in all the Basque dialects but it appears more often in the North Pyrenean ones. In this context, it shows a strong preferance towards both intransitive and imperfective constructions. Basque is a dialectal variation language in which the grammatical category of the verb causes more dispersion than the other categories. The adverbial suffix -ka helps us to say more: a certain category of intransitive verbs causes more dialectal dispersion than the others. The adverbial is less the cause of such a phenomenon than a symptom showing where it develops.La présente note propose une brève approche du morphème adverbial -ka. L'étude s'appuie sur les données d'Euskalerriko atlas etnolinguistikoa (EAEL), atlas réalisé par la société scientifique Aranzadi (Saint-Sébastien) dans les années 1970-1980
Stress on Accent; Errenteria Basque Revisited
No full textIn this paper we report an experiment of accentualplacement in Errenteria Basque. We compare data fromthree generations of speakers with the data described inprevious literature. The results show a mixed accentualsystem with marked and unmarked words (as previouslyaddressed in the literature). The relevant fact is that thephonological shape of the current unmarked words isdifferent from the descriptions in the literature since thecurrent one is a stress-accent system and the previous one suggests to be a pitch-accent system. Based on diachronic data, we show the direction of the phonological change and point a possible explanation for the development of the new accentual system based on Hualde's hypothesis

No full textThis paper was to be a contribution to a volume devoted to the left periphery of various languages which, unfortunately, was never published.xLeft-peripheral relative clauses (also known as correlative clauses) are widely attested in natural languages — in the Indo-European family, both ancient and modern, and outside of that domain too. Such is also the case of Basque, an isolate language spoken in South-Western France and Northern Spain, in which these Left-peripheric Free Relatives (LPFRs), are restricted to the Eastern dialects, i.e. those spoken in France, and the neighbouring subdialects spoken across the boundary, in Spanish Navarre..

No full textInternational audienceLes recherches sur les noms de familles connaissent, depuis quelques années, des développements considérables consécutifs à l'informatisation des sources et aux raffinements méthodologiques avec lesquels ces sources sont exploitées. Les registres paroissiaux, les actes de naissances, mariages ou décès sont en passe d'être systématiquement dépouillées et informatisés sur de larges zones géographiques et sur plusieurs dizaines de générations, ouvrant ainsi de vastes champs d'investigation. L'engouement pour l'onomastique tient au fait qu'elle permet à chacun de remonter en profondeur les généalogies de ses proches parents, et de les insérer dans un contexte géographique bien circonscrit, le nom gardant bien souvent l'empreinte de ses origines géographiques. Cependant, il serait particulièrement dommage de s'arrêter à des approches qui s'intéressent plus à décrire des histoires individuelles qu'à fournir des informations à valeur plus générale. Pour accéder à de telles informations, il devient nécessaire d'invoquer l'outil statistique qui permet de faire émerger, de la profusion des noms ou des histoires individuelles, des considérations sur l'organisation spatiale des populations, sur la réalité des frontières géographique, historique, culturelle ou linguistique qui les traversent, mais aussi sur la mobilité et les échanges migratoires survenus dans le passé de part et d'autre de ces frontières. L'ambition de cette note est de proposer quelques réponses à ces questions, dans le contexte du Pays Basque de France, du Béarn et de la Bigorre et en s'appuyant sur des méthodologies récentes
