No full textIn the world of Basque studies, we rarely have the opportunity to compare the published version and the manuscript of a text: in the case of Aizkibel's Basque-Spanish Dictionary, however, we do. In this article, we compare the manuscript and the version published after the death of the author. Concerning the manuscript, we show that it is the source of the publication and, after dating it, we express our doubts regarding its authorship. We have extracted the most remarkable differences between the publication and the manuscript, in terms of both form and content, and seek a potential justification. Finally, having observed that there are even differences between copies of the publication itself, we investigate the number of editions and try to explain these differences, describing the chronology of the printing and distribution of the dictionary.Gutxitan dugu euskalaritzan testu baten edizioa eta eskuizkribua erkatzeko aukera; Aizkibelen Diccionario Basco-Español-en kasuan ordea, hala da. No full textEl artículo comienza presentando varios datos que muestran la situación de la lengua vasca, y a continuación proponiendo una clasificación para las lenguas del mundo según sea su presencia en Internet y en la tecnología de la lengua. El cuerpo del artículo presenta el trabajo hecho por el grupo Ixa en el campo del procesamiento automático del euskara, identificando sus siete hitos principales y describiendo la estrategia que ha guiado este desarrollo. Se plantea que esta estrategia puede servir como referencia para 190 lenguas que según la lasificación propuesta no poseen recursos de tecnología de la lengua pero si poseen una mínima presencia significativa en Internet.Euskararen egoeraren inguruan hainbat datu ematen dira labur-labur, eta horrekin batera munduko hizkuntzak sailkatzeko proposamen bat aurkezten da Interneten eta hizkuntz teknologian duten egoeren araberakoa. Euskararen prozesaketa automatikoan Ixa taldeak izan duen bilakaeraren nondik norakoak zehazten dira gero, hainbat mugarri azpimarratuz eta ibilbide hori jarraitzeko erabili den estrategia deskribatuz. No full textThis is a radio interview I had in a space hosted by Eusko Ikaskuntza, the Basque Studies Society, about a magazine published in the continental Basque Country by politicians and other intellectuals of Basque origin forced into exile from the Basque Peninsula due to General Franco's military rebellion against the Republican regime.It is a panoramic overview that primarily considers the Basque-language articles published in the 1940s and 1950s, but also a summary of the social reality of the time, explaining the issues that motivated these writers. There are seminal articles by authors who would be decisive in later decades: Andima Ibinagabeitia, Federico Krutwig, Jon Mirande... among the best known, but also historians of Basque literature: Isaac Lopez Mendizabal, Dominique Dufau...We note a significant gap between the two groups, which would explain the distance that would develop over time between the new generations acting internally and a Basque government that could no longer count on the allies of the Second World War, in a context of Cold War with nuclear threat, which would bring international acceptance to the dictatorial regime established in Spain, which had had extensive military, and ideological, relations with the regimes of Hitler and Mussolini.Eusko Ikaskuntza, Sociedad de Estudios Vascos elkarteak Ipar Euskal Herrian argitaratutako aldizkari bati buruz irratian egin zidan elkarrizketa bat da, Franco generalak erregimen errepublikarraren aurka egindako matxinada militarraren ondorioz Hego Euskal Herritik epxilatzera behartuak izan ziren euskal jatorriko politikari eta intelektualek argitaratua.1940-50 urte horietan argitaratutako euskarazko artikuluak biltzen dituen panoramika da, baina baita orduko errealtasun sozialaren laburpen bat ere, idazle horien erronken berri ematen duena. Strategies to develop Language Technologies for Less-Resourced Languages based on the case of Basque
No full textIXA group has developed during 23 years a basic set of resources, tools and applications for Basque following to an initial strategy which has been adapted according to technological changes. We think that our strategy and experience can be a reference for other less resourced languages. According to a six level classification of world languages, we estimate that this strategy may be useful for several hundred languages, those that have developed a written standard but that still are beginners in Human Language Technology

Datives and adpositions in North-Eastern Basque
No full textMany languages show a degree of overlapping between the distinct categories of adpositions and oblique cases. The use of oblique cases very frequently extends to cover semantic roles that are typically expressed by adpositions. Spatial roles, such as locations, goals of motion or sources are a case in point. A common approach to this general phenomenon assimilates dative case-suffixes to adpositions, and specifies in the lexicon the relation between particular spatial roles and the two types of entities. In north-eastern varieties of Basque, datives can express spatial roles, such as targets of motion or locations. Basque is a particularly intriguing case of overlap, in the sense that its dative case-suffix behaves as a bona fide case marker outside the spatial cases, on the same level as absolutive and ergative cases, triggering agreement with the auxiliary and showing behaviour typical of DPs. We will argue that the spatial dative cases in north-eastern Basque are not different from what we see in canonical dative DPs: they are case suffixes, attached to nominal phrases, and expressing purely syntactic relations. The only difference being that the kind of functional support necessary to license case in verbal predicates can also be found internal to adpositional phrases, within certain conditions. Concretely, we will capitalize on recent work by Koopman (2000), Tortora (2009) and Den Dikken (2010) and argue that the spatial dative cases of north-eastern Basque are licensed in an aspectual projection internal to a phrase headed by a Path adposition. The argument will require a detailed discussion of some of the aspects involved in the syntax of postpositional phrases in Basque

No full textInternational audienceThe main aim of this paper is to present the leisure activities in the Basque language or linked to Basque culture undertaken by the young people in the Northern Basque Country [administered by France] today. The activities of private and public players are presented in different spheres of leisure, bearing in mind that these spheres can be analysed from three perspectives: the perspectives of education, creativity or production, and consumption. Making use of the surveys carried out, a picture of the young people in the Northern Basque Country is provided. One difficulty in this research is examining the very leisure activities of these young people. At this age they create a parallel society in their leisure time outside the usual structured leisure activities to escape from adults, so it is difficult to examine these moments because they are private. This piece of research deals with organised leisure in particular, and of an educational nature. Finally, we make recommendations on the basis of the conclusions, in order to reinforce the strong points and to support the weak points.Ikerketa honen xede nagusia da aurkeztea gaur egun Ipar Euskal Herriko gazteen euskarazko edo euskal kulturari lotu diren aisialdiak zein diren. Eragile pribatuen eta publikoen jarduerak aurkezten dira aisialdi eremu ezberdinetan, eremu horiek hiru ikuspundutik azter daitezkeela jakinez: hezkuntzarena, sorkuntzarena edo ekoizpenarena, eta kontsumoarena. Egin diren inkestak baliatuz Ipar Euskal Herriko gazteriaren argazkia ematen da. Ikerketa honen zailtasun bat da gazte horien aisialdiak berak aztertzea.
