Från Helvetets Djup till Hitlistans Topp : Sam Smith och Återkomsten av Satanic Panic
This thesis explores the influence and reception of Satanic themes in the music industry, with a particular focus on the 2023 Grammy performance by Sam Smith. It explores how the reception of Satanic imagery and symbolism in music have evolved, drawing comparisons between the Satanic Panic of the 1980’s and current reactions. The presence of Satanic themes in music has become prominent in recent years. In 2023, artists such as Doja Cat, Lil Nas X, and Sam Smith gained significant attention for their incorporation of Satanic symbolism in their work. Sam Smith's performance of "Unholy" at the 2023 Grammy Awards, in particular, sparked extensive debate and controversy, reflecting the enduring tension between artistic expression and public perception. By analyzing public complaints to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regarding Smith's performance, the study examines contemporary societal attitudes towards Satanism in music. The research highlights the persistent tension between artistic freedom and public sensitivity, providing insights into the cultural and historical context of Satanic influences in popular music. Additionally, it compares the contemporary response to Satanic themes in music with the "satanic panic" of the 1980s, identifying key similarities. By analyzing these elements, the study seeks to provide a deeper understanding of how Satanism's portrayal in music influences and reflects societal attitudes
Global overview of national regulations for antibiotic use in aquaculture production
The intensification of aquaculture industries around the globe has led to increased susceptibility and exposure to diseases. To ensure the well-being of animals and the profitability of the industry, many aquaculture farms resort to antibiotic treatments. However, with the increasing presence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), it has become important to regulate and limit the use of antibiotics, especially in animal production and regarding the antibiotics that are deemed as critically important for human health by the World Health Organization (WHO). This review describes how AMR mitigation strategies have developed over time in international settings and how they relate to aquaculture. Furthermore, we analyzed how different countries and regions abide by these statutes, as well as the antibiotic standards from a selection of certification schemes. Our results show that the role of aquaculture has been inexplicitly addressed in international guidance documents and that there is a need to further increase the activities of aquaculture operations in combating AMR, with an emphasis on alternatives to antibiotic use. We also found that most countries and regions allow the highest priority-, or critically important antibiotics in aquaculture, which could have detrimental effects on animal, environmental, and public health. As a result, most countries fail to comply with the recommendations and standards set by international organizations and certification schemes. As manuscript in dissertation</p
Swedes take significant pride in their country’s animal welfare standards, often touting their system as the ‘best in the world’. But what happens when this self-image is challenged and needs to reclaim its legitimacy? This article deals with the media reporting about the Swedish “Pig Scandal” in 2009. The scandal broke out after animal rights activists revealed extensive mistreatment of pigs in the meat industry. Bringing a psychoanalytically informed discourse theory to bear on the ensuing struggle over the meaning of the event, I argue that the restoration of the Swedish animal welfare discourse played out partly in the psychic register of fantasy. By displacing the animal cruelty inherent to the social order itself onto a series of external enemy-obstacles, the utopian promise of harmonious human–animal relations could be salvaged. In addition to this empirical contribution, the article introduces a Lacanian perspective on the role of lack, enjoyment, and fantasy in politics. The aim in this regard is to demonstrate the relevance of these psychoanalytical concepts as crucial resources for critique in the social sciences.
Decision-Making in Times of Uncertainty: Decisive Factors and Types of Decisions : “Perceptions of Ukraine’s Public Administration” Case
Animal advocacy and the radical right : the case of Sweden
Why does the radical right care so much about animals? In this study, we argue that the salience of animal advocacy within the radical right can be explained by its compatibility with these parties’ broader ideological framework. By analysing official documents from the radical right party the Sweden Democrats, we find that its animal advocacy is shaped by an ideological core consisting of nativism, authoritarianism and populism. The SD argues, for example, that immigrants are more violent towards animals; that animal cruelty must be strongly punished; and that mistreatment of animals is contrary to the moral intuitions of ‘the people’. Rather than only being used instrumentally to denigrate the cultural practices of immigrants, however, the policies reflect a broader commitment to animal well-being. Still, they differ from the egalitarian and rights-based agenda of ‘animalist’ parties, promoting as they do a paternalistic animal-welfare agenda where compassion is owed to animals not because they are our equals, but rather because they are dependent on us. The findings improve our understanding of the radical right ideology and of how ethical principles in the animal-rights debate are integrated into broader ideological frameworks and translated into party policy
Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly integrated into various sectors, but its environmental impact is often overlooked in the public discourse. As AI develops, its environmental effects pose a serious challenge to the climate. The aim of this study is to investigate how AI's environmental effects are presented in Swedish mass media, to better understand the public discourse around AI's environmental impact. By conducting a content analysis of 353 media articles from four major Swedish medias over a year, we see that only eight percent pay attention to AI's environmental impact. This underreporting shows that these environmental effects are not on the agenda of the chosen media. Such limited attention to AI's effects risks sidelining important discussions about the fact that AI's development brings environmental effects that shouldn’t be ignored, it is time to put the sustainability of AI in focus. This study covers a knowledge gap regarding the public discussion on AI's environmental effects in Sweden. The study advocates greater transparency in AI's development regarding the environment and calls on the media to prompt a public discussion based on the research
“Totenfunk” : Investigating the Techniques and Theologies of the Electronic Voice Phenomenon
In 1963, the artist Friedrich Jürgenson announced to the Swedish press that he had established contact with the deceased through messages delivered via radio or tape recorder. This proclamation sparked a debate regarding the authenticity of his recordings. Were the voices truly those of the dead? Jürgenson attracted both critics and supporters, initiating a movement that would reach its peak in the 1970s. This paper focuses on the technical and theological aspects of the electronic voice phenomenon (EVP). How did the movement explain the technique used to transmit messages from the realm of the dead to our world? What did the dead wish to communicate—what kinds of messages were conveyed? Who were the transmitting spirits, and how did they describe their realm? This investigation is conducted through an analysis of the texts written by practitioners of the electronic voice phenomenon regarding their encounters with these spirits
