Individualism without Atomism in Animal and Environmental Ethics
ABSTRACTEnvironmental ethicists have long debated which nonhuman entities bear intrinsic value, or matter for their own sake. I assess the merits of arguments that sentient nonhuman animals matter, and that nonsentient species and ecosystems matter, and argue that the former case is far more convincing, while the latter case is uncertain at best. For this reason, I argue that sentient animals should take moral priority over nonsentient entities. However, drawing on and reinterpreting the arguments of holists, I make the case that many nonsentient entities can be understood as communities that are deeply important to, and in some ways inseparable from, the well-being of individual sentient animals. Because of this, while I lean toward ethical individualism when it comes to who bears intrinsic value, I argue against an atomistic individualism and instead advocate attention to relationships and interdependence. In at least some cases, such a modified, non-atomistic individualism may create practical overlap with holist prescriptions
About the Emergence of an Environmental and Ecological Perspective in 20th Century Music: Some Reflections on Gustav Mahler and Olivier Messiaen
AbstractThis article examines the emergence of a new ecological aesthetic and environmental pedagogy in the 20th century music through the works of Olivier Messiaen and Gustav Mahler. Both composers display affinities in their inspiration to nature and to the sound of nature. The monumental dimension of Mahler’s Third Symphony (1893-96) – which conceives the symphonic form as a gigantic world, proceeding vertically from terrestrial nature to God – is similar to the cosmic program of Messiaen’s Turangalîla Symphonie (1946-48). The two musicians share a similar romantic adherence to the myth of nature, which rejects the degradation of urban space and the anthropocentrism. Messiaen, after 1950, distancing himself from the serial avantgarde, achieves a radical, integral naturalism in works such as Catalogue d’oiseaux (1956-58) and Chronocromie (1960) where a musical reinvention of birdsong becomes fundamental. This evolution is parallel in the 1970s with a new ecoaesthetics and ecological pedagogy which is affirmed, among others, in the works and in the educational model of Raymond Murray Schafer. The new musical ecocentrism is an expression of the crisis of the anthropocentrism of the avantgarde and shows the rise of a new postmodern perspective on the relationship between man and nature
Silent Struggles: Exploring Social Anxiety and Its Impact on Nigerian Adolescents
AbstractSocial anxiety affects adolescents’ ability to navigate social interactions, influencing their academic performance and mental well-being. However, research on its prevalence among Nigerian secondary school students remains limited. This study explores the incidence of social anxiety among students in Ilorin, Nigeria, with a focus on gender and age differences. Using a descriptive survey design, 400 students were selected through stratified and simple random sampling. Data were collected via the Incidence of Social Anxiety Questionnaire (ISAQ) and analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-tests at a 0.05 significance level. Findings indicate that students commonly experience anxiety in social situations such as eating in public (83.5%), interacting with authority figures (61.8%), and public speaking (61.5%). While age had no significant effect, female students reported higher social anxiety levels than males. The study underscores the need for increased awareness among educators and parents, along with targeted interventions to support adolescents, particularly females, in managing social anxiety. Creating a more inclusive and understanding school environment can help mitigate its effects and enhance students’ overall well-being
Modes of Regionalization, Administrative Divisions, and Subjective Geographies: A Parallelism between Italy and Sweden
AbstractThis article examines the relationship between administrative boundaries and other forms of regionalization through a comparison between Italy and Sweden. Drawing on theoretical contributions, desk research and preliminary fieldwork in Sweden, it highlights how administrative geography often diverges from lived geographies, shaped by sociocultural, historical, and relational processes. In Italy, the administrative model dominates both popular perception and institutional practice, sometimes producing mismatches with regions as perceived by inhabitants. In Sweden, by contrast, historical provinces and symbolic toponyms coexist with functional administrative units, reflecting a dual system of territorial reference. The comparison underscores the dynamic and constructed nature of regions and calls for governance models that better integrate functional needs with bottom-up territorial identities

AbstractMobility and Health in Genoa: A Preliminary Analysis Based on the Impacts of Migratory DynamicsThis work is part of a broader project aimed at analysing the health needs of the migrant population in Genoa. The present contribution explores the international migratory dynamics that have involved Genoa over time, with a particular focus on more recent forms of mobility. Building on this background, and through a multidisciplinary approach combining geography and medical studies, the paper seeks to understand the cultural interactions and health needs of migrant communities. In a historical period characterised by increasing global mobility, migrant status represents a social determinant of health and calls for a rethinking of public policies. The analysis offers some preliminary reflections based on data concerning the use of emergency departments by the migrant population, confirming the existence of barriers to access to healthcare services

AbstractThe contribution aims to analyze Cicero’s overall thought regarding nature as a ‘source’ of law. First, the passages from his rhetorical works are examined, where he is concerned with enumerating and defining the individual ‘parts’ that make up the Roman legal system; the attempt is then made to place this thought, in its broader philosophical scope, within the complex cultural and political context in which Cicero was immersed. In his more mature writings, from De Republica to De Officiis, the natural law tòpos takes on a central role in the political and intellectual struggle that he waged, until his very last day, in defense of the Republic – or at least of a certain conception of it
Un nuovo miliario di Teodosio II e Valentiniano III da Verona
AbstractThis contribution examines a new milestone from the territory of Verona dedicated to Theodosius II and Valentinian III. However, the names of these two emper-ors were engraved over those of Magnus Maximus and Flavius Victor, to whom the milestone was originally dedicated. On the one hand, Magnus Maximus and Flavius Victor appear quite often on milestones erected in the territory of Verona and in Italy in general. On the other, no other milestones dedicated to Theodosius II and Valentinian III are known in these regions, and the only comparisons come from Gaul and Asia Minor. It is therefore difficult to establish the exact circumstances in which this milestone was re-engraved. It may be that this occurred during Aetius’ campaigns in Rhaetia and Noricum. On that occasion, the road connecting northern Italy to Rhaetia via the Val d’Adige may have acquired a certain strategic importance
CIAO! Online Escape Room: Assessment of Basic Mathematical Skills for Incoming Engineering Students
AbstractSTEM education requires a solid foundation in mathematics, which is often lacking in incoming students. To address these gaps, Politecnico di Torino developed CIAO!/OAIC! (Corso Interattivo di Accompagnamento Online / Online Accompanying Interactive Course), an online preparatory course featuring a virtual escape room as its final self-assessment activity. This escape room, set in the digitalized spaces of the actual university, tests mathematical prerequisites through problem-solving challenges while providing immediate feedback. The study analyzes two implementations: a pilot with time constraints and prize incentives and an updated version with extended access and no external rewards. Results show that removing competitive elements and extending gameplay duration led to increased student engagement and higher success rates. The findings demonstrate that reduced time pressure facilitated deeper learning and knowledge consolidation. Additionally, the study reveals that external incentives did not significantly impact participation rates, suggesting that students’ intrinsic motivation to assess their mathematical readiness was sufficient to drive engagement with the platform
