Reflection and Irritation as Strategies in Dealing with Cultures of Knowledge on Youth Delinquency, Neo-Salafism and Marginalized Social Space - A Self-Critical Project Kick-Off: Ein selbstkritischer Projektauftakt
No full textMit diesem Artikel wollen wir einen Einblick in das sehr frühe Stadium eines DFG-geförderten Forschungsprojekts und in unsere Überlegungen zu einer kritisch-selbstreflexiven Forschungshaltung geben. Es wird der Frage nachgegangen inwiefern die konzeptuelle Anlegung eines Projekts zur Untersuchung von Interaktionen von neosalafistischen, delinquenten und nichtdelinquenten Jugendlichen in marginalisierten Stadtgebieten bereits spezifische Problematisierungen und Wissenskulturen in sich trägt. Nachdem wir das Projekt eingeführt haben, präsentieren wir ein theoretisches Konzept, welches durch eine wissenssoziologisch inspirierte Problemsoziologie die wissenschaftliche Beteiligung an Problemdiskursen konzeptuell verankert. In Kombination mit einem qualitativ-interpretativen Vorgehen werden dadurch die Schranken für eine kritisch-selbstreflexive Forschungshaltung gestellt. Im Text werden einerseits Wissenskulturen zu Jugenddelinquenz, Neosalafismus und marginalisiertem Sozialraum zusammengetragen und andererseits empirische Strategien erarbeitet, wie wir einen Umgang mit diskursiven Formierungen und den wechselseitigen Verstrickungen im Konstruktionsprozess erarbeiten. With this article we want to give an insight into the very early stage of a DFG-funded research project and into our reflections on a critical-self-reflexive research attitude. We will explore the question to what extent the conceptual set-up of a project to study interactions of neosalafist, delinquent and non-delinquent youth in marginalized urban areas already carries specific problematizations and knowledge cultures. After introducing the project, we present a theoretical concept that conceptualizes scholarly participation in problem discourses through a problem sociology inspired by the sociology of knowledge. In combination with a qualitativeinterpretive approach, this sets the barriers for a criticalself-reflexive research stance. In the text, on the one hand, knowledge cultures on youth delinquency, neoSalafism and marginalized social space are compiled and, on the other hand, empirical strategies are elaborated on how we deal with discursive formations and the mutual entanglements in the construction process
Understanding school transitions as habitual fitting processes: Insights into a qualitative-reconstructive research project on the habitus of pupils
No full textSchulische Übertrittsprozesse können in mehrgliedrigen Schulsystemen als ein bildungsbiographisches Nadelöhr verstanden werden, in dem es um (bestenfalls) harmonische Anschlussprozesse geht. Dieses Phänomen lässt sich mit dem Begriff der kulturellen Passung schärfen. Dabei handelt es sich um das Zusammentreffen eines primären Habitus (aus der engsten Sozialisation des Kindes) mit einem sekundären Habitus (den institutionellen Anforderungslogiken und Erwartungen der Schule). Insbesondere bei wenig anschlussfähigen Passungskonstellationen stellt sich die Frage, inwiefern institutionelle Normalitätserwartungen für bestimmte Gruppen erhöhte Exklusionsrisiken provozieren. In diesem Beitrag wird ein qualitativ-methodisches Forschungsprojekt vorgestellt, in dem Fallportraits ehemaliger Mittelschüler:innen aus Familien ohne höheren Bildungsabschluss nach ihrem Übertritt in eine allgemeinbildende Oberstufe rekonstruiert wurden. Im Beitrag werden vertiefende Erkenntnisse des Forschungsprojekts vorgestellt und dabei wird kritisch diskutiert, inwiefern das dynamische Zusammenspiel zwischen institutionellen Normalitätserwartungen und schul- bzw. leistungsbezogenen Verhaltensweisen der Schüler:innen als eigenständige Reflexionsfläche für die Entstehungs- und Reproduktionsmechanismen von Phänomenen der Bildungsungleichheit zu betrachten ist.In multi-track school systems, school transition processes can be understood as an educational biographical squeeze in which (at best) harmonious connection processes are at stake. This phenomenon can be explained by the concept of cultural fit. This is the clash between a primary habitus (from the child\u27s closest socialisation) and a secondary habitus (the institutional logics of the demands and expectations of the school). Particularly in the case of less compatible constellations of fit, the question arises as to the extent to which institutional expectations of normality lead to increased risks of exclusion for certain groups. This article presents a qualitative-methodological research project that reconstructed case portraits of former secondary school students from families without higher education qualifications after their transition to a higher secondary school. The article presents detailed findings from the research project and critically discusses the extent to which the dynamic interplay between institutional expectations of normality and students\u27 school and performance-related behaviour can be seen as an independent field of reflection for the mechanisms of formation and reproduction of phenomena of educational inequality

Get PDFConrad Ferdinand Meyer arbeitet in seinem historischen Erzählen mit starken Affekten. Liebe und Hass erscheinen in Extremform (Inzest, Mord und Verrat) und überlagern sich dabei mit dem zeitgenössischen Reizthema des Kulturkampfs (Nationalstaat vs. Kirche). Hass und Liebe sind mithin in Meyers Erzählen politisch-weltanschaulich überformt und gehen über die literarische Darstellung von Gefühlen hinaus. Der Beitrag macht deutlich, wie Meyer in seinem Erzählen über Stoffwahl, Figurencharakterisierung und Spannungserzeugung eine Affektpoetik verfolgt, die mit ihren spezifischen Effekten die zeitgenössische Leserschaft emotionalisiert. Indem Liebe und Hass in Interaktion mit Politik und Weltanschauung treten, stellen sie im affektiven Transfer geltende Regelungen von Kirche, Staat und Gesellschaft zur Disposition

A retrospective analysis of patients suffering from halitosis over a 17-year period
No full textHalitosis is a socially avoided topic with an increasing worldwide prevalence. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between the different forms of halitosis and factors such as: gender, smoking, stress, and oral hygiene. We analysed data from patients registered at the Center of Salivary Diagnostics, Hyposalivation and Halitosis at the University Center for Dental Medicine Basel over a 17-year period, using both subjective and objective approaches to determine the presence of halitosis. The data was statistically analysed using chi-squared and Wilcoxon rank-sum tests. Although halitosis is of multifactorial origin, an oral cause was found in 3 out of 4 patients. Men showed higher values of volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) (p = 0.002) indicative of halitosis than women, while women displayed better oral hygiene (p < 0.001) yet were twice as likely to suffer from halitophobia than males. Patients with higher tongue coating scores (p < 0.001) and periodontitis (p < 0.001) had higher levels of VSC, contributing to bad breath, whereas patients with symptoms such as stress (p = 0.81) or smoking (p = 0.28) did not reveal significantly altered measurements. This study sheds light on the complex and multifactorial nature of halitosis over a long period of time. It further underlines the importance of individualized treatment strategies, given halitosis’ multifactorial nature, in order to contribute to the patients’ treatment needs
Clinical guidance for maintaining oral hygiene in patients under-going chemotherapy or radiation therapy: a scoping review
No full textThe aim of this scoping review was to identify clinical guidance for maintaining oral hygiene in patients undergoing chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or both. Electronic searches were conducted in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar for articles published between January 2000 and May 2020. Systematic reviews, meta-analyses, clinical trials, case series, and expert consensus reports were considered eligible for inclusion. The SIGN Guideline system was used to evaluate the level evidence and the grade of recommendations. A total of 53 studies met the eligibility criteria. The results showed the presence of recommendation for oral care in three domains: management of oral mucositis, prevention and control of radiation caries, and management of xerostomia. However, most of the included studies had low levels of evidence. The review provides recommendations for healthcare professionals caring for patients undergoing chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or both, but a standard oral care protocol could not be established owing to a paucity of evidence-based data
Un manuscrito de Eugenio Coseriu por publicar: su Einführung in die Phonologie für Romanisten
No full textThe book the editor prepared for publication is based on two manuscripts left by Coseriu as materials of his Tübingen lectures in the 1970-ies. The first part deals with the principles of classical Praguian phonology, its beginnings, its development as a model of structural linguistics, and its theoretical framework. Coseriu also discusses some of Trubetzkoy’s suppositions, putting forward his own new insights. Coseriu, however, goes beyond structuralism, developing, essentially, his linguistics of speech based on the speaker’s competence.
In the second part, “Romanische Phonologie”, we find a combination of phonological and phonetic descriptions of Italian, Spanish, and French. “Weak points” of their phonological systems are discussed, which means oppositions characterized by an insufficient workload together with the consequences for normative pronunciation of what generally are fixed variants. French has the highest number of “problematic zones”, but Italian, too, is difficult in this regard. The book ends with the comparison of the phonological systems of the three languages.El libro que el editor ha preparado para la publicación se basa en dos manuscritos que fueron dejados por Coseriu como parte de su legado intelectual, los cuales le sirvieron para sus cursos en la Universidad de Tubinga en los años ’70 del siglo pasado. La primera parte trata de la fonología clásica de Praga, de sus inicios, su desarrollo como modelo del estructuralismo así como sus fundamentos teóricos. Un objetivo que le importa a Coseriu es la discusión crítica de ciertas suposiciones teóricas de Trubetzkoy. Coseriu transciende el estructuralismo al desarrollar algunas bases de una lingüística del hablar orientada hacia la competencia del hablante.
En la segunda parte, “Romanische Phonologie”, se presenta una combinación de descripciones fonológicas y fonéticas del italiano, español y francés. Se discuten los que Coseriu llama los “puntos débiles” de los sistemas fonológicos de estas tres lenguas, los que son oposiciones caracterizadas por un rendimiento funcional débil, y se exploran las consecuencias de esta situación para la pronunciación normativa de las variantes fijas, establecidas. Esto concierne sobre todo la lengua más complicada en este sentido, el francés, pero también el italiano. La comparación de los sistemas fonológicos de las tres lenguas termina la obra
