What Happens when the Tomato Ripens? Manufacturing Sense through Metaphorical Suspension in the Picturebook Kechappu-Man
Coseriu delineates three ways by which incongruence may be suspended in discourse (Coseriu 2001[1976], 2007[1988]): metaphorical, metalinguistic, and extravagant suspension. This paper focuses on metaphorical suspension, investigating how it contributes to creating sense in the Japanese picturebook Kechappu-Man (Ketchup-Man) by Noritake Suzuki. The story’s surreal characters and story beats ooze incongruence when set against a backdrop of what otherwise seems reality. Younger, more socially-inexperienced readers can enjoy the story’s bizarre nature at face value, while older readers will likely see beyond the surface-level extravagance and discover more nuanced metaphors at play within the narrative. Kechappu-Man includes various “building blocks” meant to guide readers towards this more metaphorical interpretation of the story’s characters and events. This picturebook’s multiple metaphorical suspensions ultimately interact to turn this story’s nonsense into congruency, culminating in a melancholic if not fatalistic view of life in modern society. Moreover, exactly how these “building blocks” function to create the metaphorical sense in Kechappu-Man can be more clearly understood via comparison with the Korean translation, as the latter seems more inclined toward extravagant suspension due to a relative lack of linguistic devices aimed at inviting deeper metaphorical interpretation.Coseriu delineates three ways by which incongruence may be suspended in discourse (Coseriu 2001[1976], 2007[1988]): metaphorical, metalinguistic, and extravagant suspension.
This study seeks to analyze the articulation of meaning in Eccl. 7:25-26 and to answer whether this excerpt contains misogynistic contente. It constitutes part of a broader research on Eccl. 7:25-29, a passage in which the speaker, Qohelet/The Preacher, supposedly attributes to women a morality inferior to that of men. Based on the theoretical-methodological framework of Text Linguistics proposed by Coseriu (1994), two semiotic relations are distinguished in the texts: in the first, there are designation (the reference to the extralinguistic reality) and signified (the content given by a language); in the second, there is meaning (the human attitude implied by the discourse or the purpose for which it is carried out). The analysis of these relations points to two implicit paraphrases in Eccl. 7:25, wickedness is folly and justice or righteousness is wisdom, which articulate themselves to a higher-level unit of meaning that challenges the interpretation of the preceding portion of Ecclesiastes (7:16-17) as a defense of moderate practice of wickedness and righteousness; in Eccl. 7:26, gender disagreement leads to the comparison of equality the woman is equal to the man, which articulate itself to the unit in which the feminine voice of Qohelet/Preacher, the soul mate of the masculine speaker Qohelet/the Preacher, is introduced. From this latter comparison, it follows that the speaker is not a misogynist. Finally, it is verified that the two verses comprise a riddle, with turns of speech by Qohelet/the (masculine) Preacher and Qohelet/the (feminine) Preacher. This study seeks to analyze the articulation of meaning in Eccl. 7:25-26 and to answer whether this excerpt contains misogynistic contente. Istruzioni per l’uso, modello 1888. Note su Giuoco di pazienza di Matilde Serao

The article aims to investigate the metaliterary writing of Matilde Serao and the reading problems that this method posed for readers of her time and still poses for contemporary criticism. Starting from the collection Fior di passione (1888), we study the reception of her work perceived at the time of its release as “paradoxical”, “enigmatic”, and even “artificial”. In this wake, we focus on the short story «Giuoco di pazienza», contained in the collection, a privileged case study as it is proposed not as a complete text, but as an accumulation of descriptions to be organized and interpreted. We are faced with an open work avant la lettre that denies the traditional function of the short story – that is, the actual telling of a story – to make an appeal to the reader who must complete it himself. Serao demands (creates) an active reader. Through this novel Serao explores the literary possibilities of the circumstantial paradigm, very popular at the time, but also dialogues with the most experimental scriptural practices of his time, namely with the Scapigliatura, specifically with Carlo Dossi. The analysis of this novella, long forgotten by critics, invites us to rethink both the writer\u27s overall work – her constant but poorly highlighted essayistic reflections on her craft, the multiple appeals to readers and the constant meta-references in her prose – and, ultimately, it alters – or should – its positioning within the literary canon. The article aims to investigate the metaliterary writing of Matilde Serao and the reading problems that this method posed for readers of her time and still poses for contemporary criticism. Physician’s Seeking Behaviours for Health Information Services for their Patients: Insights from an Online Survey of German Physicians
In addition to consultations, physicians can contribute to patients\u27 knowledge and empowerment by referring them to appropriate health information services. This requires physicians to engage in health information-seeking behaviours to be aware of where to find adequate health information. Our study aims to deepen the understanding of physicians\u27 intentions to seek health information services for their patients. The modelling of their seeking intent is guided by the Planned Risk Information Seeking Model adapted for physicians for the first time. An online survey of 364 German primary care physicians and specialists supports the utility of the psycho-motivational predictors considered in the PRISM for explaining physicians\u27 seeking intent. Attitudes towards health information services, seeking-related subjective norms concerning colleagues, and perceived seeking control emerged as the most relevant predictors of physicians\u27 seeking intent. These three predictors could form the ground for a parsimonious model of physicians\u27 seeking intent and highlight barriers that need to be addressed to strengthen the navigational role of physicians
Center-Left and Right-Wing News, YouTube, and Twitter as Key Connectors in the Social Media System: A Cross-Media and Cross-Platform Analysis of Hyperlinks
Extending research on technological affordances and user practices, this article treats social media as a system comprised of differentiated yet interconnected platforms and shaped by users’ information sharing practices. Specifically, hyperlinks — generated through cross-platform and cross-media information sharing — facilitate information diffusion and reveal major connectors in the social media system. Analyzing the linking patterns of 186 platforms with two large-scale datasets on prominent social and political issues in the U.S., we find the leading role of cross-media sharing, with center-left and right-wing news outlets serving as major pathways of system-wide information flow. Also, YouTube and Twitter emerge as hubs in the social media system via cross-platform sharing. Integrating established theoretical perspectives and providing robust quantitative descriptions, this study advances social media research and introduces a system-of-information perspective for addressing social-media-related communication challenges
User features and gendered patterns in repeat online advice-seeking behavior
There is limited understanding of the user-level variables related to the common activity of repeat advice-seeking on virtual communities. Gender is of particular interest; past studies indicate men participate less on support forums. Social role theory provides descriptions of the interplay between gender roles and help-seeking, but these have not been quantified in an online context. We conduct a computational linguistic analysis on a year-long dataset of 17896 users on Reddit’s r/relationships, comparing the demographics, linguistic choices, and user histories of repeat and non-repeat advice-seekers self-identifying as male or female. We find strong evidence of gendered behavior, with users largely behaving more similarly to their identified gender. Female users are more likely to be repeat advice-seekers and to engage in advice-giving alongside their future advice-seeking attempts. There are otherwise no significant differences between the proportions of male and female users who return solely to seek advice. Female users are also more likely to write longer and more informally, seeking advice on domestic issues and communication. Male users are more focused on dating and past partners. Our findings shed light on the characteristics of a possibly vulnerable user population and set the foundation for future investigations on the influence of offline social roles on online help-seeking

The article discusses the question of animal authorship under German copyright law and argues for the advancement of legal research through interdisciplinary conversations. It sets out by outlining the key aspects of German copyright law and arguments from legal discourse and then moves on to discussing those elements within this discourse with the potential for meaningful revisions of current legal practice: the definition of the artwork as an entity uniquely tied to human creators, the notion of creativity and its connection to ‘human dignity,’ and the exclusiveness of current definitions of personhood. It suggests a conversation with various disciplines subsumed under the moniker of the environmental humanities, particularly animal philosophy and ethics, artistic practice and art theory, and environmental anthropology and the comparative study of legal cultures. Such a conversation, it is argued, offers a rich archive and toolkit for revising and advancing legal theory and practice, no least in better alignment with scientific insights into animal cognition and behaviour, but also with greater attention to non-western legal practice.
