External cervical resorption in maxillary canines

    No full text
External cervical resorptions (ECRs) are challenging dental hard tissue lesions. They are frequently missed due to their asymptomatic progression. Three-dimensional imaging and increased awareness within the dental community have likely contributed to the observed rise in ECR prevalence over the recent years. While the exact etiology of ECR remains unclear, numerous risk factors have been identified, encompassing both physical and chemical factors. However, idiopathic cases have also been documented. Literature highlights the propensity of ECRs to occur in anterior teeth and molars, often linked to prior orthodontic treatments and picked up by bitewing or periapical radiographs. However, in cases involving canines, early diagnosis is frequently missed, and lesions are typically discovered at a later stage only, when clinical signs and symptoms manifest. We present several cases in this narrative review, including a case report on a 59-year-old patient presenting with an ECR in the maxillary left canine (tooth 23), decades after orthodontic treatment. The lesion was successfully managed using a combination of endodontic and surgical treatment. Despite the advanced stage of resorption, the tooth was preserved. Given ECR\u27s slow progression and frequent late clinical detection, additional radiographic monitoring of front and canine teeth can be recommended for patients with predisposing factors, such as a history of orthodontic treatment or trauma. This proactive approach can facilitate earlier diagnosis and timely intervention, improving outcomes for affected teeth

Long and unjustly considered ‘younger sisters’ of Gruppo 63 and still rarely considered by literary criticism, the Neoavanguardia of visual poetry offers countless insights into issues intersecting the feminine sphere and work, whether salaried or caregiving labor—of the home, the family—or intellectual engagement: in other words, theoretical work, writing, and artistic practices. Unlike the more renowned group established in Palermo, Gruppo 70 included a woman among its founding members, Lucia Marcucci, soon joined in that poetic militancy by Ketty La Rocca. From this starting point, and extending the focus to authors not affiliated with Gruppo 70, such as Anna Oberti and Mirella Bentivoglio, it is possible to trace a path that moves from the formal level—specifically the deconstruction of aesthetic languages, often dominated by male voices—to a reflection on women\u27s labor, understood in the broad sense described above. What emerges is a ‘counter-avant-garde’ that insists on the re-signification of female identity and the body, often drawn from consumer magazines prescribing women\u27s behavioral codes both in society and within domestic walls. This movement brings the guerriglia semiologica to the streets with the primary concern of fighting for emancipation, while through an elaborate fusion of formal research and feminist theory, it reflects on the role and labor of women and female authorship

The essay offers a reading of Passaggio a Trieste, where Fabrizia Ramondino recounts the experience of the Women\u27s Mental Health Center, founded in 1992 by Assunta Signorelli. The bond of friendship and collaboration between the two women offers a singularly compelling angle for analyzing the implications between gender issues and work. The latter, declined, by the one in the practice of writing and, by the other, in the practices of mental health care, is progressively defined through some key-words that shore up both Ramondino\u27s poetics and the practice of the Women\u27s Center. Besides restoring the cross-section of via Gambini by placing it within the broader context of deinstitutionalization, the direct references to the text dialogue with critical-theoretical sources and voices that stand for the other two elements with which the contribution intends to confront: feminism and the critical movement promoted by Basaglia in the field of psychiatry. Finally, reconnecting the reflection to the theme of labour, starting from the social and political commitment that marked Ramondino\u27s biography, the texts in which the author turns her gaze more directly to the work realities and struggles of the subalterns are traced backwards to show, in conclusion, how they are, in fact, deeply linked to Passaggio a Trieste

Examining the Mechanisms Underlying the Persuasive Effects of User-Initiated Customisation on Attitudes Toward Health Behaviours

    No full text
Insights from tailoring research have been useful in enhancing online health communication efforts. User-initiated customisation (UIC) is a novel tailoring approach that involves the self-tailoring of information. This study examined the strength and the mechanisms underlying UIC effects to further understand the suitability of UIC as a method of persuasion for online health communication efforts. Using a web-based experiment (N = 178), the effects of UIC on attitudes via sense of control, attention, and elaboration were assessed, including the moderating role of behaviour type (i.e., detection vs. prevention). The results demonstrate that UIC (vs. generic webpages) was significantly more effective at increasing sense of control, which consequently enhanced attention and elaboration of information, resulting in stronger positive attitudes toward health behaviours. These effects were stable across different behavioural contexts. The findings suggest that the online communication efforts of governments can be enhanced through the embedment of a UIC webpage feature

The Strategic Goals of US Election Ads on Social Media: A Descriptive Study of the 2022 Midterms

    No full text
Election campaigns increasingly pursue their strategic goals online, using digital advertising not only to persuade voters but also to raise funds, mobilize supporters, and collect data. These varied objectives reflect how campaigns operate within broader networks of candidates, parties, and outside groups. The extended party network forms the strategic backbone of modern U.S. campaigns, yet its internal division of labor in paid advertising has remained largely unmeasured. By classifying the goals of over 377,000 Facebook and Instagram ads from the 2022 US elections, we provide empirical evidence about the strategic behavior of candidates, parties, and outside groups. To this end, we build on previous work to extend and refine a taxonomy of nine goals for online election ads: acquisition, contact, donate, event, learn, persuade, poll, purchase, and vote. We analyze how advertisers allocate spending across goals and show that some — notably persuasion, donation, and learn — receive far greater spending than others. We also show that different types of sponsors often pursue different goals. For example, candidate advertisers devote a much higher share of their ads to fundraising than non-candidate advertisers, highlighting the costs of running for political office in the US. We also find that ad goals vary depending on the timing of the ad, the type of sponsor, and the characteristics of the targeted audience. Together, these findings offer the first systematic multi-sponsor account of how digital advertising reflects a functional division of labor within the extended party network that structures contemporary U.S. campaigns

Searching for Elected Officials: Google’s Prioritization of Political Information

    No full text
How does Google Search direct people to information about their elected offcials? To answer this, we conducted daily searches for members of the US House of Representatives from all 435 US congressional districts and DC between September 1 and December 31, 2020, resulting in 20.1 million search engine results pages (SERPs) and 302 million search results. We find that these search results are dominated by a small number of mainstream sources (eg. Twitter, Wikipedia), with the top seven domains accounting for 64.2% of all results. There was no significant difference in the partisanship of search results depending on whether the member whose name was searched was a Democrat or Republican. Additionally, we found a clear prioritization of politician-controlled social media, government, and personal websites over news media, local news outlets over national ones, and reliable news over unreliable news. We observed a lack of sensitivity to search location, where searching for a given member’s name on the same day but from different locations yielded similar results.

Integral Linguistics from a Cognitive Semiotics perspective: Metaphor between semiotic and pre-semiotic experience

    No full text
In recent years, Eugenio Coseriu’s linguistic theory has been increasingly re-evaluated within contemporary debates, particularly for its ambition to offer a unified and coherent framework for understanding human linguisticity. This paper examines the theoretical tension between Coseriu’s perspective and cognitive-semantic approaches, which often isolate cognitive mechanisms from their intrinsic semiotic and linguistic grounding. A paradigmatic case is Conceptual Metaphor Theory and its subsequent developments, which I take here as a litmus test to highlight the divergence between two ultimately irreconcilable conceptions of language. Convinced of the need to recover a philosophically consistent conception of language that transcends the limitations of mainstream Cognitive Linguistics and Cognitive Semantics, I will propose ways to sustain and expand the dialogue already underway between Coseriu’s theory of language and Cognitive Semiotics – both sharing critical motives toward the dominant cognitive paradigm. The aim is not to portray Coseriu as a forerunner of Cognitive Semiotics –nor, even less, to construct a “Coserian Cognitive Semiotics” – but rather to explore how Coseriu’s Integral Linguistics might enrich this emerging disciplinary field, suggesting that a dialogue with Coseriu can illuminate key theoretical issues and provide fertile ground for rethinking language (and semiosis) as a philosophical object in its own right. In recent years, Eugenio Coseriu’s linguistic theory has been increasingly re-evaluated within contemporary debates, particularly for its ambition to offer a unified and coherent framework for understanding human linguisticity. Beyond the Beat: The Representation of Women in Music Videos Across Genres over Four Decades

    No full text
The portrayal of gender in music videos has significant implications for societal attitudes and behavior. Women continue to be underrepresented and sexualized in music videos. Most research on the subject thus far has focused on a single music genre, which carries the inherent risk of placing the blame for encouraging gender inequality and misogyny on specific music genres. Our study uses a comprehensive automated quantitative analysis of 9,799 music videos spanning four decades and multiple genres. We used multimodal large language models (MLLMs) to examine the visibility and sexualization of women. We find that while women’s visibility has increased over time, gender inequalities persist and vary significantly across genres. In particular, women artists tend to have higher visibility and are more likely to be sexualized in their videos. In addition, genre differences play a significant role, with the results revealing that dance videos have higher levels of sexualization. These findings emphasize the problematic role of music videos in shaping gender perceptions and highlight the need for continued research and awareness-raising to promote gender equality in media representations, particularly within the dynamic landscape of the production and consumption of music videos

The Stigma of Neukölln: On the Spatialisation of the Integration Discourse and the Logic of Internal Militarisation in the Context of New Year’s Eve 2022/23

On New Year’s Eve 2022/23, riots broke out in Berlin that attracted nationwide attention. The district of Neukölln and its young residents quickly moved into the spotlight of public interest. In no time, a debate erupted that was rife with racist stereotypes. Politicians and the media stylized the district as the symbol of supposedly failed integration, and calls for tougher police measures grew louder. A nuanced analysis of the events—as well as discussions on institutional racism, police violence, or the proportionality of state actions—was largely absent. At the same time, the incidents were instrumentalized during the Berlin election campaign and used to popularize and enforce a law-and-order policy, which led the following year to massive police armament—accompanied by media and political narratives that had already anticipated further escalations. Against this backdrop, the public reaction to New Year’s Eve can be interpreted as a classic form of moral panic, during which specific social groups are stigmatized and state repression and armament are legitimized. This dynamic is not a new phenomenon: for years, discourses about Neukölln have been shaped by the (re)production of racist and stigmatizing images and the systematic criminalization of the local population

"More than \u27problem children\u27?": Foster children in public discourse

    No full text
This article focuses on the public perception of foster children in Switzerland. Until now, foster children have mostly been portrayed as passive objects; their ability to act as subjects and actors is rarely recognized. Based on theoretical premises from childhood studies on children as actors, children\u27s agency and participation, the article examines how foster children are portrayed in Swiss print and online media. These media representations are presumably related to the perception of foster children by the public in general, and by child and youth welfare professionals in particular. Methodologically, the article is based on a sociology of knowledge approach to discourse; a total of 308 media documents were included in the analysis. The results show that foster children are portrayed in the media on the basis of common narratives, and that they themselves hardly ever have a say and only limitedly appear as actors and agents. However, it falls short to describe them as mere ‘problem children’
