Evaluating Transferability in Multilingual Text Analyses

    No full text
Multilingual text analysis is increasingly important to address the current narrow focus of English and other Indo-European languages in comparative studies. However, there has been a lack of a comprehensive approach to evaluate the validity of multilingual text analytic methods across different language contexts. To address this issue, we propose that the validity of multilingual text analysis should be studied through the lens of transferability, which assesses the extent to which the performance of a multilingual text analytic method can be maintained when switching from one language context to another. We first formally conceptualize transferability in multilingual text analysis as a measure of whether the method is equivalent across language groups (linguistic transferability) and societal contexts (contextual transferability). We propose a model-agnostic approach to evaluate transferability using (1) natural and synthetic data pairs, (2) manual annotation of errors, and (3) the Local Interpretable Model-Agnostic Explanations (LIME) technique. As an application of our approach, we analyze the transferability of a multilingual BERT (mBERT) model fine-tuned with annotated manifestos and media texts from five Indo-European language-speaking countries of the Comparative Agendas Project. The transferability is then evaluated using natural and synthetic parliamentary data from the UK, Basque, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Through the evaluation of transferability, this study sheds light on the common causes that lead to prediction errors in multilingual text classification using mBERT

Once a criminal, always a criminal? The effectiveness of moral behavioral interventions for juvenile delinquents: Die Wirksamkeit moralischer Verhaltensinterventionen bei jugendlichen Delinquenten

    No full text
There is empirical evidence that juvenile delinquency may be associated with disturbances in moral development, moral judgment, empathy, and the emotions of guilt and shame. Consequently, interventions targeting the moral development of juvenile delinquents have been developed to reduce reoffending. However, to date there is no comprehensive summary of studies examining the effectiveness of these interventions. The current article therefore addresses the following two questions: Are moral behavioral interventions effective in influencing moral judgment of young delinquents. On the other hand, the question should be addressed as to whether these interventions can prevent them from reoffending. The results of the two meta-analyses conducted in this context show that moral behavioral interventions had a small to medium, but still significant, overall effect on moral judgment. Only intervention type was found to be a significant moderator. The overall effect on relapse was small and not significant

    Delinquency and Socialization

    No full text
Welche Rolle spielen unterschiedliche Institutionen in solchen Konstellationen? Delinquency is generally understood as the result of unsuccessful socialization processes, insofar as social norm and value structures have not been appropriated in the desired way. How do such deviations arise in the course of socialization processes and how can such developments change again? What role do different institutions play in such constellations? The four articles in the thematic focus address these and related questions. The issue also contains two free academic articles that deal with the effects of social inequalities at transitions in school and in academic university life

Die Eventmarke - eine Marke wie jede andere? Zum marken- und lauterkeitsrechtlichen Schutz der Eventmarke unterBerücksichtigung des Bundesgerichtsurteils 4A_518/2021 und 4A_526/2021 «QATAR 2022» und «WORLD CUP 2022» vs. «PUMA WORLD CUP QATAR 2022» und «PUMA WORLD CUP 2022» vom 6. April 2022

Juli 2023 an. “CNN Can Kiss My As$”: A Novel Description of Hyperpartisan U.S. News Consumers

    No full text
News consumption in the United States is polarized and fragmented, with an abundance of partisan news publications appealing to political identities on both the left and the right. Yet, there is an abundance of hyperpartisan news on the right, the content of which has been shown to be harmful to democracy. This study captures one of the most comprehensive pictures to date of the U.S. Americans who consume far-right media and makes connections between such media use and the state of American democracy. After a lengthy data-cleaning process, we analyzed open-ended survey responses from a nationally representative sample of more than 10,000 U.S. American adults, finding that nearly ten percent self-report at least one far-right news outlet as a primary news source. Furthermore, significantly more U.S. Americans report consuming far-right and moderate-right news outlets than counterparts on the left. We then examined the characteristics of this small but significant group, given the current political climate in the United States, finding that far-right news consumers are overwhelmingly white, male, Republican, Christian, and without a college degree. This study reinforces previous findings that patterns in hyperpartisan media usage demonstrate growing extremism in the U.S., and that it is deeply rooted in identity

Intensive oral hygiene programme for the diagnosis and (pre-)treatment of gingival mucosal redness and swelling

Imposing redness and swelling of the gingiva repeatedly cause uncertainty in the dental practice. Insufficient oral hygiene plays a dominant modifying role here. An intensive oral hygiene protocol as an initial screening procedure can therefore often prevent complex diagnostic or therapeutic steps

Device-Dependent Biases in Mobile Online News

    No full text
One in four German internet users claims that search engines are their main gateway to news and a majority of Germans reports to primarily use their smartphone over their laptop/desktop computer to access news online. Yet, search-engine providers such as Google have repeatedly pointed out to actively favor specific forms of technical content optimization for mobile devices (e.g., "Accelerated Mobile Pages"), raising the question of whether this preference results in biases toward mobile-optimized content. In light of regulatory changes, this study investigates source diversity and source prominence in news items related to a range of issues presented to users when searching for news-related subjects via a smartphone or laptop/desktop computer in Germany. Using agent-based testing, 75,767 searches were performed on Google in mid-2020, applying a dynamic set of search terms on a range of different topics. Results indicate significant discrepancies in source diversity and source prominence between smartphone and laptop/desktop computers that can largely be attributed to mobile-optimized content likely to reach primarily younger news consumers who favor mobile devices. Overall, however, source diversity is equally high on both types of devices, highlighting the necessity for future research to focus on algorithmic influences on societies\u27 shared understandings of relevance beyond source diversity

Are You Worried About Getting Covid-19 or About Losing Your Job? How Different Covid-19 Related Fears are Indirectly Related to Vaccination Acceptance via Media Consumption

    No full text
Although research showed that media consumption during Covid-19 is related to preventive behaviours, we know less about why people turn to quality or alternative media in the first place. We focus on the role of different fears. More specifically, we assumed that fears focusing on health threats were positively associated with the consumption of quality media and negatively with the consumption of tabloids and alternative media. We expected the opposite pattern for fears focusing on economic and societal threats, and that media consumption mediated the relationship between fears and vaccination acceptance. A survey among a representative sample of Germans (N = 1080) showed that the fears correlated as expected positively with the consumption of the respective media type. However, the predicted negative relationships with the other media type often turned out as non-significant. The fears were differentially related to vaccination acceptance via media consumption, indicating the theoretical and practical value of differentiating between different types of fears
