    No full text

    Annual Report: 2022–2023

    No full text
In this annual report, the Collegium Helveticum documents the fellow year 2022–2023. Newly designed as a series by the creative studio Upset, the report mainly presents that year\u27s fellows and their academic and artistic work, alongside a documentation of the event program. In their editorial, Director Sebastian Bonhoeffer and Deputy Director Mario Wimmer look back onto the year and reflect on the Collegium’s commitment to diversity. Sprinkled throughout the publication, fellows and staff shine a personal spotlight on something they most remember from the year. In an interview, three fellows talk about their experience and the value of organizing an event at the Collegium. In addition to that, the report offers further information about the fellowship program at the Collegium, its philosophy of putting the fellows first, and the incoming fellows of 2023–2024

Political content and news are polarized but other content is not in YouTube watch histories

    No full text
Research on ideological biases and polarization on social media platforms primarily focuses on news and political content. Non-political content, which is vastly more popular, is often overlooked. Because partisanship is correlated with citizens’ non-political attitudes and non-political content can carry political cues, we explore whether ideological biases and partisan segregation extend to users’ non-political exposures online. We focus on YouTube, one of the most popular platforms. We rely online data from American adults (N = 2,237). From over 129 million visits to over 37 million URLs, we analyze 1,037,392 visits to YouTube videos from 1,874 participants. We identify YouTube channels of 942 news domains, utilize a BERT-based classifier to identify political videos outside news channels, and estimate the ideology of all the videos in our data. We compare ideological biases in exposure to (a) news, (b) political, and (c) non-political content. We examine both exposure congeniality (i.e., are users consuming like-minded content?) and polarization (i.e. are there overlaps between Democrats and Republicans in the content they consume?). We find substantial congeniality in the consumption of news and political videos, especially among Republicans, and high levels of polarization in this exposure (i.e., limited overlaps between Democrats and Republicans). We also show that both exposure congeniality and polarization are significantly lower for non-political content, in that non-political videos are less likely to be ideologically like-minded and both Democrats and Republicans consume similar non-political content. Theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed

Der Einkaufswagen zwischen Gesellschaft und Design: Erkundungen zu Designprozessen des Migros-Wägelis

    Get PDF

    What is an isogloss?

    No full text
This short contribution discusses the term and concept of isogloss: the space where a linguistic phenomenon exists or, by metonymic extension, the line that separates a particular linguistic phenomenon from another. Although the concept is currently used as an established and canonical term in linguistics, it is reasonable to explore its scope and the real sense that it carries, as well as to consider its origins and potential ambiguity in use. The main issue with the concept is that it seems to be theoretically necessary yet at the same time is not empirically attestable, which runs contrary to essential epistemological principles. We will seek to show that a) there is no contradiction between the existence of isoglosses as discrete units and the continuity of phenomena on the empirical level, b) the supposed end of the era of the diatopic anchorage of language in times of modern migration is a myth, c) that isoglosses should not be considered as established lines but rather as projections resulting from processes of individual constructions of spaces, and finally, d) that a central task of dialectology and of historical linguistics consists of the identification of the multi-layered superposition of different isoglosses that reflects the complex history of a language or variety.

Lockdown scepticism: Australian and American doom discourse on Reddit

    Get PDF
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent infodemic, user consumption of online news content soared, leading to the issues of doom-scrolling and doom-writing. This type of behaviour may have an adverse impact on individual well-being and increase exposure to misinformation on social networking sites (SNSs), including Reddit. The present critical discourse study combines Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), Pragma-dialectics (PD) and critical theory to explore the roles of power and ideology in a corpus extracted from r/LockdownSkepticismAU and r/LockdownSkepticism, and to evaluate the Redditors’ argumentation. The analysis shows that the users of both subreddits appear to compensate a perceived loss of agency by making improbable statements about the future. The doomers’ arguments, as part of their online deliberations on issues relating to national COVID-19 prevention policy, reveal several fallacies. Linguistic evidence is provided for how biopower, in its ability to further life or death, is constitutive of the social norms to which both subreddit communities subscribe

Who speaks and who is heard on Facebook? Political mobilization and engagement patterns of partisanship and gender in Switzerland’s direct democracy

    No full text
This descriptive study investigates political mobilization and user engagement patterns on Facebook and associated partisan and gender discrepancies. It focuses on Switzerland, where political actors frequently seek to mobilize and shape citizens’ opinions before direct-democratic voting on wide-ranging policy issues. Using digital trace data from CrowdTangle, the analysis focuses on the posting frequency and received user interactions of 770 Swiss political actors’ Facebook pages. The analysis period covers 20 months, from November 2019 to July 2021, during which five popular votes occurred, and the sampled FB pages published more than 226,000 posts and received more than 18,000,000 user interactions. A descriptive quantitative analysis and a multiple regression analysis revealed an overall skewed pattern: Mobilization and user engagement are driven by small subsets of highly active and interacted-with FB pages. A few FB pages of the right-wing Swiss People’s Party and male politicians receive highly disproportionate user engagement – relative to more centrist parties and female politicians – but also relative to their electoral share in the national parliament. The results show that only a few dominant political voices are widely heard on Facebook, even if many speak. These insights are of interest beyond Switzerland, as Facebook and other social media platforms shape political discourse across liberal democracies
