Fibromatous Epulis: A Clinical Case Report

    No full text
A 35-year-old patient presented with a painless, broad-based exophytic lesion in the buccal interdental region between teeth 13 and 14. Despite oral hygiene efforts the lesion persisted for around one year. Radiology excluded bone involvement, and histopathology after excision confirmed a fibromatous epulis, which is characterized by collagen-rich connective tissue. There was no recurrence within one-year follow-up. Surgical removal proved to be efficient

When Science Meets Digital Branding: Examining content creators and hyperlinks in climate change YouTube videos from 2015-2019

    No full text
The science media ecosystem continues to dramatically change with the proliferation of digital media channels and platforms. While there are many different types of digital media filling this void, the use of online videos, particularly on YouTube, has become one of the main sources for information, specifically for science and environmental issues. While most researchers examine the content of online science news and information, we show that digital trace data, including hyperlinks, “likes”, and comments that are unique to participatory online media, can reveal interesting patterns about how and why people communicate and engage with content as well as other community members. Using climate change as a case study, we demonstrate how researchers can harness hyperlinks to understand who produces controversial science news and information online, and the motivations underlying how content creators use of hyperlinks for science communication and public engagement. While many existing studies in science communication have focused on understanding the political dimension of online science news and information, our paper reveals that digital branding is a crucial part of science communication on video-based platforms such as YouTube and TikTok. We find that amateur content creators and new media outlets use hyperlinks to promote their channel and other social media presences to raise revenue. While self-promotion through citing links to one’s other social media platforms is associated with more views, linking to revenue raising websites is not associated with more views. We discuss the implications of these contexts for the online science news and information ecosystem.&nbsp

Supernumerary teeth develop in addition to the normal dentition and are a therapeutic challenge for pedodontists, orthodontists and oral surgeons alike. Therefore, interdisciplinary treatment concepts are needed for the benefit of the patient. In the present, two-parted literature review on supernumerary teeth, current classification, associated complications, diagnostic steps and different therapeutic approaches are presented and discussed. Supernumerary teeth are diagnosed in the primary and permanent dentition. Supernumerary incisors, canines, premolars, and molars, as well as distomolars and mesiodentes can be seen according to the location of the supernumerary teeth. Furthermore, based on the morphology of the supernumeraries four different types can be differentiated: conical, tuberculate, supplemental, and odontoma. Supernumerary teeth often remain asymptomatic, and are only diagnosed incidentally during a routine dental visit on radiographs (often intraoral). Nevertheless, various complications have been report- ed in the literature for supernumerary teeth such as disturbed eruption, malpositioning/rotation, root resorption of neighbouring teeth, and development of dentigerous cysts in impacted supernumeraries. Root resorption of neighbouring teeth can be radiographically diagnosed in up to 22.8% of the cases

„Once more, with feeling“: Exploring the (Anti-)Emancipatory Potential of Emotions in Transformation

Emotions are currently garnering increased attention in the social sciences and humanities. Recent discussions have shed light on the understanding that voting decisions, political activism, and moral judgments are not solely cognitive processes; they are significantly influenced by biographical, socialization, and affective factors. Our special issue, titled “‘Once more, with feeling’ – The (Anti-) Emancipatory Transformation Potential of Feelings,” delves into this intersection. It explores interdisciplinary perspectives on emotions and their capacity to transform biographies, collectives, and society in both emancipatory and anti-emancipatory ways. This special issue traces back to a three-day conference held at the University of Tübingen in November 2022

Who Does(n\u27t) Target You? Mapping the Worldwide Usage of Online Political Microtargeting

    No full text
Political campaigns are increasingly investing in targeted advertising on social media platforms to reach voters. Despite critical implications for citizens and elections, little is known about the targeting strategies deployed by political parties — especially in countries beyond the global north. This paper provides a comprehensive descriptive analysis of political microtargeting practices on Facebook and Instagram across 95 countries during 113 national elections. By analyzing the Meta Ad Targeting dataset, we explore targeting strategies of 54k political advertisers who ran 2.5 million ads between August 2020 and December 2022. The findings indicate that election campaigns worldwide utilize targeted advertising. Most commonly, spending is allocated towards a single targeting criterion, however, in wealthier countries and electoral systems with proportional representation, a greater amount of money is spent on microtargeting by combining multiple criteria. Furthermore, targeting strategies vary along ideological lines of political parties who seek out voters more typically aligned with each side of the political spectrum. Nonetheless, parties use microtargeting irrespective of political ideology. Our findings offer the first comparative analysis of political microtargeting on Meta platforms for countries across all continents. Methodologically, we introduce a semi-automatic method to identify worldwide political advertisers using multiple data sources. Our study deepens the understanding of how country and party contexts explain differences in targeting strategies, highlighting the need for more research beyond the global north. Finally, our results have important implications for policy makers, and other stakeholders who seek to develop regulations to address the challenges posed by political microtargeting techniques

Analyzing Support for U.S. Presidential Candidates in Twitter Polls

    No full text
Polls posted on social media can provide information about public opinion on a variety of issues from business decisions to support for presidential election candidates. However, it is largely unknown whether the information provided by social polls is useful or not. To enhance our understanding of social polls, we examine nearly two thousand Twitter polls gauging support for U.S. presidential candidates during the 2016 and 2020 election campaigns. First, we describe the prevalence of social polls. Second, we characterize social polls in terms of the engagement they elicit and the response options they present. Third, leveraging machine learning models, we infer and describe several characteristics, including demographics and political leanings, of the users who author and interact with social polls. Finally, we study the relationship between social poll results, their attributes, and the characteristics of users interacting with them. Our findings suggest how and to what extent polling on Twitter is biased in terms of content, authorship, and audience. The 2016 and 2020 polls were predominantly crafted by older males and manifested a pronounced bias favoring candidate Donald Trump, whereas traditional surveys favored Democratic candidates. We further identify and explore the potential reasons for such biases and discuss their repercussions

The Histrionics of Warrior Masculinity in 1 & 2 Tamburlaine (1587)

    Get PDF
This essay analyses the histrionics of warrior masculinity in 1 & 2 Tamburlaine in light of the social, political and technological shifts that transformed warfare in early modern England. It first looks at the contexts of these shifts and how they necessitated new models of masculinity in keeping with early modern civil society. The prospective elimination of the nobility’s warrior masculinity caused great anxieties about the foothold of masculinity in society more generally, which became a major subject of discussion in public discourse at the time. The early modern theatre, with its particular function in formulating topical issues and discussing questions about identities, staged the anxiety about effeminacy brought about by the demise of pre-modern warriorship. This essay, however, proposes that English Renaissance drama of war mediates the transition of the model manhood from that of martialism to that of civility. It argues that Christopher Marlowe’s 1 & 2 Tamburlaine, as a famous play centering on war and conquest, engages in such mediation through the hyperbolic characterisation of the pre-modern warrior. By doing so, it renders such a figure unhuman and thereby unviable in early modern society. The essay further analyses how the dramaturgy of the plays estranges the audience from the figure of pre-modern warrior and discredits its legitimacy

«There’s something missing from the story…»: the (in)visibility and representation of diversity in school knowledge from the perspective of the post-migrant generation

Migration-related diversity is part of everyday life in most Swiss schools. Many pupils have ties to more than one country, they grow up with several languages and cultural practices, and their biographies and daily lives are shaped by transnational connections. Is this diversity reflected in the school curricula and in the historical knowledge they receive at school? This article presents findings from the group discussions with young people whose parents migrated to Switzerland and their perspective on school content. How do young people perceive the conventional historical knowledge and representations transmitted at school? Do these representations, or the lack of them, have an impact on their sense of belonging, and if so, in what way? The different population groups in Switzerland have different historical and political experiences and histories, which are differently represented and made (in)visible in historical narratives and educational content. This raises the question of how the diversity of society can be reflected in school teaching
