Periodontal rehabilitation in a deaf patient with symptomatic epilepsy in Sturge-Weber syndrome - a case report
When a syndrome forms the background of a systemic involvement of periodontal disease, it is necessary to fully exploit the resources outside, which soon reaches its limits in private practice. In the patient’s environment, it must be checked whether support for the patient can be guaranteed. Without support, as in this presented case, the patient’s oral hygiene could hardly be maintained. This article reports on a female patient who was referred to the Center for Dental Medicine at the University of Zurich. In addition to various secondary carious lesions, an apical whitening, two carious wisdom teeth and two extremely mobile molars in the third quadrant, the patient had chronic, localized advanced (stage III, grade B) periodontitis associated with systemic disease (deafness and Sturge-Weber syndrome). For two years, the patient was treated at the Department of Periodontology. Due to the strong bleeding tendency on the left side, facial localization of the naevus flammeus, the patient was partially referred to the Polyclinic of Oral Surgery and treated there. Numerous oral hygiene sessions, scaling and root planing, restoration with composite fillings, a root filling, removal of wisdom teeth and finally removal of hypermobile molars 36 and 37 during corona lockdown were performed. In the meantime, the patient has been orally rehabilitated. Home oral hygiene was reorganized with the patient’s family and the patient was discharged to a close supportive periodontal recall for the time being
How COVID-19 and the News Shaped Populism in Facebook Comments in Seven European Countries.
Citizen-generated populism is flourishing in the comments sections of online news. The factors that shape the extent of such populist communication from below are still under-researched. This study focuses on the COVID-19 crisis to examine how contextual and media-related factors are related to the extent of populism in comment sections on Facebook pages of news outlets from seven European countries (AT, DE, FR, IT, NL, SE and UK). Computational text analysis, machine translation and Bayesian multilevel regression were used to analyze digital trace data from 65,258 posts and 3.4 million comments published between February 2020 and June 2021. The computational measurements - multilingual dictionaries for posts and distributed dictionary representation to capture populism in comments - were rigorously validated. The results show that posts referring to the government, experts, COVID-19, and restrictions exhibit higher levels of populism in the comments sections. The stringency of containment policies was positively associated with populism in Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands when COVID-19 was mentioned. Lower levels of populism were observed for tabloid media and when news outlets engaged in visible moderation. The implications of these findings beyond the pandemic context and methodological challenges are discussed
Comparing Russian and Ukrainian media frames during the war: A mixed-method semantic network approach
During the 2022–2023 phase of the Russo-Ukrainian war, information flows were intensively framed by both sides, predominantly via various Telegram channels. This article implements a mixed-method semantic network approach to analyse media framing in the context of this conflict, exemplified through a case study of Mariupol and Azovstal siege. Although prior research highlighted contrasting framing patterns in Russian and Ukrainian media, a comprehensive comparative analysis of media frames during the ongoing war still needs to be conducted. Our study addresses this gap by investigating and interpreting the inter-conceptual relationships surrounding the frames within the selected four Russian and Ukrainian Telegram channels. We examine variations in framing among conflicting sides and oppositional media and reveal four issue-specific conflict frames, each depicting diverse representations of the main events, actors, and their roles. Our find-ings contribute to a more nuanced understanding of the conflict’s cultural and ideological background and lay a foundation for further exploration of generic frames in Russian and Ukrainian media
Media-based mechanisms of gendered evaluations of politicians (Dissertation Summary)
This dissertation addresses the enduring underrepresentation of women in political decision-making and its multi-faceted causes. It focuses on the media’s pivotal role in perpetuating and shaping gender inequalities within politics. The dissertation’s objective is to illuminate the influence of media coverage on voters’ perceptions of male and female politicians. Revisiting interdisciplinary literature, it first proposes a theoretical causal framework of media-based gendered candidate evaluations. Through a series of four empirical articles and eight data collections, employing diverse methods like meta-analysis, mixed methods think aloud paradigms, and survey experiments, the research challenges conventional wisdom of ubiquitous gender biases. Contrary to expectations, media coverage generally does not systematically distort gender-based voter evaluations. Rather, it tends to create gender similarities, influencing both male and female politicians similarly. Notably, when distinctions emerge, they often favor women. The findings suggest that women in politics can gain by emphasizing expertise over conforming to gender norms. However, the study cautions that subtle biases may persist within intricate political and media systems. In summary, this dissertation uncovers the nuanced dynamics of media, gender, and voter responses, advancing our comprehension of gender biases in political communication and offering insights for promoting more equitable political representation
Writing about the Middle East in a Postmodern Era. A Critique
In this paper the complexities of ongoing conflicts in the MENA region are scrutinized through a critical lens. Acknowledging the influence of multiple actors and factors in shaping political history, the paper challenges the prevailing use of postmodern and post-colonial paradigms in framing and assigning responsibility for these conflicts. While recognizing their contributions, the paper argues against their limitations in providing a nuanced understanding of the underlying dynamics and roots of MENA conflicts.
The paper argues that postmodern and post-colonial lenses oversimplify conflicts by presenting them in binary terms and focusing solely on the role of Western colonialism. Instead, it advocates for a broader perspective that considers the complexities of the region\u27s history, including the legacies of the Ottoman Empire and local social structures and actors. It suggests a contextual realist approach analysing conflicts at both internal and external levels, examining state formation processes and regional dynamics. While acknowledging the challenges, it asserts that with the right analytical and methodological tools, a deeper understanding of the region\u27s conflicts and the underlying dynamics of its political landscape is possible
Reflections on racism and history by secondary school students in the context of global history lessons
The article discusses pupils\u27 perspectives on global history lessons with a thematic focus on racism and the resulting opportunities for a critical examination of power and inequality relations. The empirical basis are interviews with nine students in which they reflected on the lessons they experienced themselves. The results show that the teaching units enable them to put previously covered historical content into a new perspective. In addition, the pupils ascribe social relevance to racism, although this reference to the present does not necessarily go hand in hand with reflection on their own subject positions. This shows the importance of lifeworld references for an in-depth discussion. It is therefore crucial to discuss references to the present and lifeworld in the classroom. Only in this way can students historically locate racism as a global phenomenon of the present and (self-)critically reflect on the associated power and inequality relations
The first contact with the child given up for adoption: Perspectives of the biological parents on motives, hopes and fears
This article is dedicated to the biographically and emotionally complex motivations of birth parents who have given their child up for adoption and are planning to meet their now adult child decades later. In the explanations, reference is made to the analyses of the completed project Domestic Adoption in Switzerland. The motives for birth parents to seek or avoid this contact and the hopes and fears they associate with this decision are of interest. The focus is on the period before the first meeting. For the study, 15 biographical interviews with parents were analysed using grounded theory. The parents\u27 main motives recorded were to find out how their child grew up without them, to justify their decision to adopt at the time - whether free or unfree - and to extend their family affiliation. This is linked to hopes of recognition and fears of rejection of their parental role
The platformisation of party politics? A comparative study of party websites’ technological infrastructures 2012-2021
Political parties have gone digital. Political scientists in countries around the world have diagnosed the rise of the digital party and traced parties’ adoption of digital technology. Existing attempts to understand parties’ digital practices have focused on the adoption of different tools, with scholars empirically studying and theorizing how and why digital technology is used. What has received less attention is the technical architecture and origins of these tools, questions that have been more directly examined by political communication scholarship. In this paper we entwine insights from these two disciplines, interrogating the idea of ‘platformization’ in the context of political technology. Presenting a unique, longitudinal dataset that captures the technological development of political party websites in 66 parties in 16 countries, we provide unprecedented insight into the evolution of party websites and show evidence of increasing platform dependency. Our findings have important implications for our understanding of parties’ relationship with technology, showing how technological developments and monopolies can lead to increasingly homogenized practice internationally
