Strategies for the Promotion of Regenerative Tourism: Hospitality Communities as Niches for Tourism Innovation

    No full text
Regenerative tourism has emerged as a critical evolution from traditional approaches to sustainable tourism, which have proven insufficient to address contemporary environmental, social, and economic challenges. This study examines the case of ‘Aves de la Sierra’ in Huelva, Spain, a pioneering initiative that integrates ecosystem regeneration and community revitalisation as the core of its regenerative tourism proposal. Through the analytical theoretical framework of the Multi-Level Change Perspective (MLP) and transformative innovation, it analyses how local communities consolidate themselves as niches of innovation in regenerative tourism, autonomously managing their resources and narrative. The results of this action research process reveal a number of findings that can serve as a starting point for the dynamisation and development of other regenerative tourism experiences. These include the need for public policies aimed at strengthening these innovation niches through collaborative networks, organisational learning, and adequate funding. This article also contributes to narrowing the gap between theory and experience in regenerative tourism.Provincial Council of Huelva and Latin-American Laboratory of Socioecological Innovation and Center for Research in Contemporary Thought and Innovation and Social Development. Integration of artificial intelligence with automation for predictive maintenance in sustainable hydrogen production plants

    No full text
Automation in modern industries is possible with the aid of sensors that measure signals needed for control, fault detection and decision making about a process. Such decisions include the time to perform predictive maintenance which is not possible when there is a failure in one of the sensors. Artificial intelligence techniques can be used to detect faults in a sensor and predict what its correct reading should be using signals from other sensors involved in the process. For accurate prediction, a signal from an alternative sensor, or a combination of signals from different sensors, should be selected that has a strong correlation with the signal to be predicted. In this study, to demonstrate the application of artificial intelligence in automation, an electrolyser operating in an automated process has been considered. A Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) algorithm was developed to select the best signal among others with the highest correlation coefficient of 0.99. The selected signal was then used in a long short-term memory (LSTM) to predict faulty temperature signals in the electrolyser. The root-mean-square error (RMSE) of the predicted signal was 0.1351.Ingeniería Electrónica, de Sistemas Informáticos y Automátic

Teachers' Perspective on the Integration of Media and Information Literacy into the Uruguayan Educational Curriculum

    No full text
Media and Information Literacy (MIL) was explicitly incorporated into the Integrated Basic Education Curriculum of Uruguay in 2023. This article aims to analyze teachers' perceptions regarding this integration, considering four dimensions: a) curricular space; b) concept and scope; c) resources and key actors; and e) challenges and opportunities. To achieve this, a two-session technopedagogical experience was designed, involving 33 teachers from early, primary, secondary, and high school education from 10 departments across the country. Among the most significant findings, it is noteworthy that: a) teachers identify the lack of familiarity with the term MIL as the primary challenge for its integration, followed by the absence of specific training in the subject, particularly at the early educational levels; b) there is a predominant perception of MIL as a tool to address specific issues in the media environment, such as misinformation and digital fraud, rather than as a means to cultivate critical, informed, and creative citizens; and c) the Ceibal Center is recognized as the most committed key actor in promoting this type of education at the national level. Thus, the intention is to provide researchers, educators, and policymakers with up-to-date information regarding the configuration of this educational policyThis research has been supported by the “EPIT24 Santander-UHU: Mobility Grants for International Stays of Doctoral Students at the University of Huelva”, funded by Banco Santander, whose award was crucial for the completion of this study. The authors express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Ana Isabel Varela, director of the Centro Ludus at the Universidad Católica del Uruguay (UCU), for her valuable collaboration throughout the development of this project, as well as to the Centro Ceibal for its contribution to the dissemination of this initiative.

    No full text
The present doctoral thesis aimed to identify the psychosocial and contextual determinants of gambling behavior in adolescents. To this end, the first study analyzed the usefulness of parental and peer social norms in predicting the onset of gambling behavior. Next, the second study evaluated the relationship between gambling advertising and gambling behavior. The third study prospectively investigated the relationship between gambling perceived accessibility and gambling frequency and problem gambling. Finally, the fourth study tested the utility of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) as an explanatory model of gambling intention in adolescent gamblers and non-gamblers, and of the gambling frequency in gamblers. To address these four objectives, a survey-based longitudinal study was conducted, including two assessment moment: an initial assessment and a follow-up assessment one year later. To analyze the factors predicting gambling onset, the sample for the first study consisted of 440 adolescents who reported not having gambled at the initial assessment and also participated in the follow-up (50.9% males; aged 12-17 years; M = 14.8; SD = 1.4). For the second and fourth studies, data from 1174 adolescents who participated in the initial assessment were used (53.6% males; aged 12-20 years; M = 15.8; SD = 1.7). For the third study, data from 554 adolescents who participated in both initial and follow-up assessments were used (52.6% males; aged 13-17 years; M = 15.1; SD = 1.1). The results of the first study showed that susceptibility to peer pressure, perceiving that friends engage in gambling, and perceiving parental and peer approval of gambling behavior are associated with a higher likelihood of initiating gambling. Conversely, perceiving gambling-related problems among friends reduced the likelihood of initiating such behavior. Regarding the second study, it was found that exposure to advertising is associated with increased gambling frequency and more gambling-related problems. This relationship between advertising and gambling frequency was primarily mediated by a favorable attitude toward gambling and the normalization of this activity. Additionally, perceived family support was identified as a protective factor against gambling advertising. The results of the third study showed that a greater perception of gambling availability was related to higher frequency and more gambling-related problems in adolescents. In this case, self-efficacy to control gambling moderated this association, such that it can be considered a protective factor against perceived gambling availability. Finally, in the fourth study, the TPB proved to be a useful model to explain the intention to gamble in both adolescent gamblers and non-gamblers. Specifically, the results showed that maintaining more positive attitudes toward gambling, perceiving other’s approval of this behavior, as well as low self-efficacy to control gambling, are related to a greater intention to gamble, both in adolescent gamblers and non-gamblers. The explanatory capacity of the TPB was higher in gamblers than in non-gamblers, suggesting that previous experience with gambling enhances the association between model variables and the intention to gamble. We believe that these results, despite certain methodological limitations discussed later, may be useful for interventions aimed at delaying the onset of gambling in adolescents and preventing the emergence of gambling-related problems. These results may also be useful when designing policies that consider the regulatory framework of advertising and gambling accessibility.Psicología Social, Evolutiva y de la Educació

Evaluation of aerial thermography for measuring the thermal transmittance (U-value) of a building façade

    No full text
In efforts to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions in the construction sector, policies promoting energy efficiency improvements in existing buildings are being implemented. Accurately assessing the impact of energy retrofit strategies requires precise determination of thermal envelope performance through energy audits. Aerial thermography, employing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with infrared thermal cameras (IRT), is an underused method overcoming limitations in energy audits of large buildings or complexes. This approach offers an elevated perspective, providing an overview of the building’s thermal patterns, aiding in the identification of thermal envelope defects. By measuring temperature distribution, even in inaccessible envelope areas, the severity of identified defects can be estimated. Beyond detecting thermal bridges, air leaks, and moisture, aerial thermography is valid for estimating thermal transmittance (U-value) of enclosures. The aim of this research is to evaluate this method to calculate the U-value of the façade of an university building located in a Subtropical Mediterranean climate, during a typical full day in different seasons of the year. Concurrently with aerial thermography, the thermometric method (THM) was applied to compare results and refine the operational conditions during U-value measurement using different statistical indices and uncertainty analysis. The results demonstrated the validation of airborne thermography as a method for U-value calculation under specific meteorological and operational conditions, overcoming the common physical limitations of traditional building audit methodIngeniería Electrónica, de Sistemas Informáticos y AutomáticaIngeniería Minera, Mecánica, Energética y de la Construcció

Synergistic antifungal activity against Candida albicans between voriconazole and cyclosporine a loaded in polymeric nanoparticles

    No full text
The goal of this work is to investigate if the synergistic antifungal activity between cyclosporine A, CsA, and voriconazole, VRZ, increases when both drugs are encapsulated in a nanocarrier as compared when they are free. The preparation and characterization of blank and VRZ and CsA loaded polymeric based PLGA nanoparticles (PLGA, PLGA-PEG, and PLGA+PEG) was a necessary previous step. Using the more suitable NPs, those of PLGA, the antifungal susceptibility tests performed with VRZ-loaded PLGA NPs, show no significant increase of the antifungal activity in comparison to that of free VRZ. However, the synergistic behavior found for the (VRZ+CsA)-loaded PLGA NPs was fourfold stronger than that observed for the two free drugs together. On the other hand, the investigation into the suppression of C. albicans biofilm formation showed that blank PLGA NPs inhibit the biofilm formation at high NPs concentrations. However, a minor effect or even a slight biofilm increase formation was observed at low and moderate NPs concentrations. Therefore, the enhancement of the biofilm inhibition found for the three tested treatments (CsA alone, VRZ alone, and VRZ+CsA) when comparing free and encapsulated drugs, within the therapeutic window, can be attributed to the drug encapsulation approach. Indeed, polymeric PLGA NPs loaded with CsA, VRZ, or VRZ+CsA are more effective at inhibiting the C. albicans biofilm growth than their free counterparts. This work was financied by the Consejería de Economía, Conocimiento, Empresas y Universidades de la Junta de Andalucía (FQM-206, FQM-274), the European Union (Feder Funds), and by the University of Seville (Ayudas Servicios Generales de la Universidad, CITIUS, 2024/00000387, 2024/00000395). Psychosocial factors, substance use and condom use among heterosexual youths

    No full text
The increase in sexually transmitted diseases and the decline in male condom use among young heterosexuals make it necessary to study condom use behaviours and associated factors. The objectives of this study are: to study sexual behaviours and their relationship with socio-demographic variables; to examine intrasubject differences; to analyse whether self-efficacy, time perspectives and use behaviour are related to socio-demographic characteristics and sexual behaviours. The sample consists of 333 heterosexuals aged 18-30. There is evidence of more equal sexual behaviour between women and men, although men engage in more risky behaviours. Condom use behaviour differs depending on whether the sexual relationship is with a regular or occasional partner. Higher self-efficacy and future orientation contribute to safer sex. A greater orientation towards the present is associated with unsafe practices. The lines of action to be followed in safer sex interventions are outlined
