The escalating challenges of Helicobacter pylori-induced gastric complications, driven by rising antibiotic resistance and persistent cancer risks, underscore the demand for innovative therapeutic strategies. This study addresses this urgency through the development of tailored semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (semi-IPN) serving as gastroretentive matrices for amoxicillin (AMOX). They are biodegradable, absorb significant volume of simulated gastric fluid (swelling index > 360 %) and exhibit superporous microstructures, remarkable mucoadhesion, and buoyancy. The investigation includes assessment at pH 1.2 for comparative analysis with prior studies and, notably, at pH 5.0, reflecting the acidic environment in H. pylori-infected stomachs. The semi- IPN demonstrated gel-like structures, maintaining integrity throughout the 24-hour controlled release study, and disintegrating upon completing their intended function. Evaluated in gastroretentive drug delivery system performance, AMOX release at pH 1.2 and pH 5.0 over 24 h (10 %-100 %) employed experimental design methodology, elucidating dominant release mechanisms. Their mucoadhesive, buoyant, three-dimensional scaffold stability, and gastric biodegradability make them ideal for accommodating substantial AMOX quantities. Furthermore, exploring the inclusion of the potassium-competitive acid blocker (P-CAB) vonoprazan (VONO) in AMOX-loaded formulations shows promise for precise and effective drug delivery. This innovative approach has the potential to combat H. pylori infections, thereby preventing the gastric cancer induced by this pathogen. This research was funded by MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033, grant number PID2020-115916GB-I00.Ingeniería Química, Química Física y Ciencias de los Materiale

A Versatile Platform for PV System Integration into Microgrids

    Get PDF
Advancing decarbonization critically depends on the integration of PV systems into microgrids. However, this integration faces challenges, including the variability of photovoltaic solar energy production, the demands of energy management, and the complexities of grid synchronization and communication. To address these challenges, a PV emulator platform is an essential tool. This paper presents a novel four-layer PV emulator platform that seamlessly integrates power systems, control systems, measurement instrumentation, and communication processes. The proposed platform enables the emulation of I-V curves and the dynamic adjustment of operating points—including both the maximum power point (MPP) and power reserve point (PRP)—as well as temperature and irradiance while providing sufficient power capacity for microgrid integration. To validate its effectiveness, the platform was assessed for its capability to adjust operating points, such as MPPs or PRPs, under varying irradiance and temperature conditions. The results show that the platform effectively adjusts operating points with a deviation of less than 5% from theoretical values and successfully tracks a sequence of operating points. This performance underscores the platform’s potential in integrating and managing PV systems within microgrid environments, thereby advancing the path to decarbonization. This paper is part of the project “Integral control system to optimize the microgrids energy demand”, grant number PID2020-117828RB-I00, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities. This paper presents an analysis of the pollen and spore records associated with the thermal complex of Arucci Turobriga, a Roman city (1st century BCE-3rd century CE) located in southwestern Spain. The pollen record represents an environment consisting mainly of holm oak and cork oak groves and ash groves as riparian vegetation, accompanied by pine and wild olive trees, as well as thickets of kermes oak, mastic, rockrose and broom. Due to their abundance during the period of the town’s development, some species could have been used as forestry, agricultural or ornamental resources, such as Cupressaceae and Pinus species, as well as olive, carob and hazel trees. The group of herbaceous species represents a ruderal flora, probably associated with anthropised enclaves, given the large number of nitrophilous species it includes. The spore record is dominated by parasitic fungi (mainly Ustilago type and Puccinia type) and mycorrhizal fungi (mainly Glomeromycota p.p. and Glomus type). On the other hand, the presence of spores of coprophilous fungi corroborates the identification of a latrine in the northern sector of the city’s hot springsEste trabajo ha sido financiado por el Proyecto “La ciudad de Arucci (Aroche, Huelva)” de la Consejería de Cultura, Turismo y Deporte de la Junta de Andalucía. Valorisation of Metallurgical Waste for Inorganic Pigments Production

    Get PDF
Four industrial wastes, namely, tionite (T), iron grit (IG), electroplating sludge (ES), and mill scale (MS), are typically disposed of in controlled hazardous landfills because of their toxic content, posing potential harm to human health and to the environment. At the same time, the chemical composition of these wastes, specifically the nature and content of transition metals, makes them potentially attractive for reuse in pigments manufacturing. This work details the study of these residues for producing coloured perovskites to be tested as inorganic pigments. The residues were mixed, in different proportions, and subsequently calcined to produce the required structures. The colouring potential was then assessed in a ceramic paste and in a transparent glaze. Leaching tests were carried out to verify the effective immobilisation of the hazardous species. Dark pigments were successfully obtained from the mixtures of T: ES: Co3O4, T: MS and T: IG. The crystalline phases present in T: ES: Co3O4 are nickel–chromium iron oxide spinel–Fe1.5Cr0.5NiO4 (without Co) or trevorite–Fe2NiO4 (with Co), titanium nickel oxide–TiNiO3 and titanite–CaTiSiO5. The mixtures T: MS and T: IG presented hematite (Fe2O3) and pseudobrookite (Fe2TiO5). Leaching tests confirmed the non-hazardous or inert character of the synthesized pigments. Products showed brownish or greyish hues, depending on the pigment added. T:75ES_1100, T:73ES:2Co_1100, T:75MS_1000, T:75MS_1100 and T:75IG_1000 pigments can effectively and safely be used to colour ceramic paste replacing partially or totally the commercial pigmentsThe authors gratefully acknowledge Huelva University for providing the waste and the collaboration with the Department of Materials Engineering of the University of Aveiro, Portugal.
