Assessing the Hands-on Usability of the Healthy Jeart App Specifically Tailored to Young Users
Background: The widespread adoption of mobile devices by adolescents underscores
the potential to harness these tools to instill healthy habits into their daily lives. An exemplary
manifestation of this initiative is the Healthy Jeart app, crafted with the explicit goal of fostering
well-being. Methodology: This study, framed within an applied investigation, adopts an exploratory
and descriptive approach, specifically delving into the realm of user experience analysis. The focus of this research is a preliminary examination aimed at understanding users’ perceived usability of the application. To glean insights, a comprehensive questionnaire was administered to 101 teenagers, seeking their evaluations on various usability attributes. The study took place during 2022. Results: The findings reveal a considerable consensus among users regarding the evaluated usability aspects. However, the areas for improvement predominantly revolve around managing the information density, particularly for a subset of end users grappling with overwhelming content. Additionally, recommendations are put forth to streamline the confirmation process for user suggestions and comments. Conclusion: This analysis illuminates both the strengths of the app and areas ripe for refinement, paving the way for a more user-centric and efficacious Healthy Jeart application. This work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation under project PID2020-119478GB-I00 and by the European Commission, the University of Huelva, and the Junta de Andalucía under project UHU-202062.Tecnologías de la Informació
Unveiling a Technosol-based remediation approach for enhancing plant growth in an iron-rich acidic mine soil from the Rio Tinto Mars analog site
This paper explores the potential of Technosols made from non-hazardous industrial wastes as a sustainable solution for highly acidic iron-rich soils at the Rio Tinto mining site (Spain), a terrestrial Mars analog. These mine soils exhibit extreme acidity (pHH2O = 2.1–3.0), low nutrient availability (non-acid cation saturation < 20 %), and high levels of Pb (3420 mg kg−1), Cu (504 mg kg−1), Zn (415 mg kg−1), and As (319 mg kg−1), hindering plant growth and ecosystem restoration. To address these challenges, the study systematically analyzed selected waste materials, formulated them into Technosols, and conducted a four-month pot trial to evaluate the growth of Brassica juncea under greenhouse conditions. Technosols were tailored by adding varying weight percentages of waste amendments into the mine Technosol, specifically 10 %, 25 %, and 50 %. The waste amendments comprised a blend of organic waste (water clarification sludge, WCS) and inorganic wastes (white steel slag, WSS; and furnace iron slag, FIS). The formulations included: (T0) exclusively mine Technosol (control); (T1) 60 % WCS + 40 % WSS; (T2) 60 % WCS + 40 % FIS; and (T3) 50 % WCS + 16.66 % WSS + 33.33 % FIS. The analyses covered leachate quality, soil pore water chemistry, and plant response (germination and survival rates, plant height, and leaf number). Results revealed a significant reduction in leachable contaminant concentrations, with Pb (26.16 mg kg−1), Zn (4.94 mg kg−1), and Cu (2.29 mg kg−1) dropping to negligible levels and shifting towards less toxic species. These changes improved soil conditions, promoting seed germination and seedling growth. Among the formulations tested, Technosol T1 showed promise in overcoming mine soil limitations, enhancing plant adaptation, buffering against acidification, and stabilizing contaminants through precipitation and adsorption mechanisms. The paper stresses the importance of tailoring waste amendments to specific soil conditions, and highlights the broader implications of the Technosol approach, such as waste valorization, soil stabilization, and insights for Brassica juncea growth in extreme environments, including Martian soil simulants. This research received financial support from the Regional Government of Andalusia (Spain) and the European Regional Development Fund Andalusia 2014–2020 under Project P-18-TP-3503, in partnership with DSM Soluciones Medioambientales. Presence of Quercus Suber Soft-Leaf Defoliators on Trees with Distinct Foliar Monoterpene Emission Profiles
The cork tree, Quercus suber L., is a characteristic species of the Dehesa agrosilvopastoral
system, typical of western Spain. Defoliating insects are an important component of these ecosystems. This study assessed the presence and impact of defoliators feeding on Q. suber soft leaf tissue and their relationship with foliar monoterpene emission profiles. Samplings consisted of weekly tree beating (15 times per tree per sample) during the flight period of key species. We studied 26 cork trees with known profiles of foliar monoterpene emission (13 pinene and 13 limonene chemotypes). We identified a total of 272 larvae from 9 species. The main species were Catocala nymphagoga Esper (40.8%) and Periclista andrei Know (27.6%). Notably, 70.6% of larvae were found on trees with a pinene chemotype. The combined abundance of the four key defoliator species (C. nymphagoga L., P. andrei, Bena bicolorana L., and Cyclophora punctaria L.) was 62.7% lower on limonene-chemotype trees than pinene-chemotype trees. Significant differences were found in defoliation damage between leaves with distinct terpene emission profiles. These results suggest that both the abundance and damage caused by defoliators differ with trees’ emission profiles, and this may indicate differences in palatability and/or nutritional quality between Q. suber trees with distinct foliar monoterpene emission profiles. This research was funded through the Andalusian Plan for Research, Development and Innovation (PAIDI) by the Gestión de Recursos Forestales research group (RNM301), and the article processing charges were funded by this group (RNM301) and the Análisis y Planificación del Medio Natural research group (RNM315).Ciencias Agroforestale
The pristine precursor of Andean‑type magmatism preserved in magma mingling zones
Intermediate magma compositions have been postulated to be parental to Andean-type magmatism
in the recent years. Geochemical and experimental methods have allowed the modelling of a
hypothetical parental composition that accounts for the major element trends displayed by Andeantype
batholiths. However, natural plutonic examples matching the modelled composition remain
lacking, likely due to the predominance of fractionated liquids and cumulates in the batholiths after
protracted and large-scale differentiation. Contrary to this, magma mingling zones, a common feature
in Andean-type batholiths, are characterised by quenching phenomena, minimising differentiation.
In this paper, we present data from intermediate magmatism in the world-class Gerena magma
mingling zone in the Seville Sierra Norte batholith (southern Iberia), compositionally equivalent to
Andean-type magmatic series. Geochemical data from quenched dark globules of variable scale and
the corresponding host granodiorites are contrasted with the bimodal trends displayed by the host
batholith. Results suggest that the smaller-scale dark globules have not undergone any significant
fractionation. Furthermore, after conducting geochemical modelling we conclude the dark globules
represent a composition that could be parental to Andean-type magmas. We propose that magma
mingling zones are an optimal place to probe for parental magmas of Andean-type magmatism,
particularly those represented in pristine melanocratic, intermediate globules. This work was supported through the Spanish Research Agency (AEI) IBERCRUST II/PID2021-126347NB-I00/

Molecular Dynamic Simulations of Aqueous Micellar Organometallic Catalysis: Methane Functionalization as a Case Study
Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations constitute a powerful tool that provides a 3D perspective of the dynamical behavior of chemical systems. Herein the first MD study of the dynamics of a catalytic organometallic system,in micellar media, is presented. The challenging methane catalytic functionalization into ethyl propionate through a silver-catalyzed process has been targeted as the case study. The intimate nature of the micelles formed with the surfactants sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) and potassium perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) has been ascertained, as well as the relative distribution of the main actors in this transformation, namely methane, the diazo reagent and the silver catalyst, the latter in two different forms: the initial compound and a silver-carbene intermediate. Catalyst deactivation occurs with halide containing surfactants dodecyltrimethylammonium chloride (DTAC) and Triton X-100. Computed simulations allow explaining the experimental results, indicating that micelles behave differently regarding the degree of accumulation and the local distribution of the reactants and their effect in the molecular collisions leading to net reaction. We thank to Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación for Grants PID2020-113797RB-C21, PID2020-113588RB-I00, and PRE2018-086249, also funded by FEDER “Una manera de hacer Europa”. Analysis and Quantification of the Distribution of Marabou (Dichrostachys cinerea (L.) Wight & Arn.) in Valle de los Ingenios, Cuba: A Remote Sensing Approach
Cuba is struggling with a growing environmental problem: the uncontrolled spread of the
allochthonous weed species marabou (Dichrostachys cinerea) throughout the country. Over the last
70 years, marabou has become a formidable invasive species that poses a threat to Cuban biodiversity
and agricultural productivity. In this paper, we present a free and affordable method for regularly
mapping the spatial distribution of the marabou based on the Google Earth Engine platform and
ecological surveys. To test its accuracy, we develop an 18-year remote sensing analysis (2000–2018)
of marabou dynamics using the Valle de los Ingenios, a Cuban UNESCO World Heritage Site, as
an experimental model. Our spatial analysis reveals clear patterns of marabou distribution and
highlights areas of concentrated growth. Temporal trends illustrate the aggressive nature of the
species, identifying periods of expansion and decline. In addition, our system is able to detect specific,
large-scale human interventions against the marabou plague in the area. The results highlight the
urgent need for remedial strategies to maintain the fragile ecological balance in the region. This study was funded by the Andalusian Agency for International Development and Cooperation (AACID) [grant number 2017DEC013].Ciencias Agroforestale
