Research Assessment – Navigating Pitfalls and Promoting Change

    No full text
Watch VIDEO. The main theme of the Munin conference is scholarly communication in its myriad of forms. The push for a reform of research assessment argues for precisely the need to recognize and reward a wider set of research activities and competencies. The demand – and initiative – for change will surely impact how and where research is disseminated and communicated. A key question then is how to evaluate research activities and outputs beyond academic publications. With this panel we welcome a discussion on research assessment that brings together perspectives from all the topics of this year’s Munin conference. We invite you to add your insights and diverse expertise to this panel that will reflect on questions such as: how do we measure the impact of citizen science, or document quality in innovative research practices and scholarly outputs? And how to ensure consensus on assessment methods for a wider and more inclusive range of research activities within a diverse academic landscape

This book consists of fifteen interdisciplinary lesson plans that inspire us to learn more about the ocean and our sense of it. Kindergarten and high school teachers are our primary audience, but they are not the only ones. We hope people of all ages can use them. Parents can experiment with their children at home. Some classes can be tried at retirement homes or local youth groups. Older students can use other plans as a guide for teaching younger students or at science fairs. All lesson plans were developed within the framework of the research project entitled "Expanding knowledge about methane in the Arctic" (AKMA project number 287869). The AKMA project was funded by Science Norway and led by UiT The Arctic University of Norway in collaboration with the US Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (Woods Hole).

Focus: Where are and what happens at cold seeps and how scientists study them. Learning objectives: After this lesson, students should be able to: Relate different datasets by observing and describing scientific maps Differentiate between carbon dioxide and methane gas Clarify misconceptions about greenhouse gas Explain what cold seeps are and why most gas/methane hydrates occur at continental margins Describe some of the methods scientists use to locate and study methane/gas hydrates Prerequisites: Prior to this lesson, students should be familiar with understanding maps, molecular structure and bonding, and the greenhouse effect and gases. Key words: Arctic Ocean, Methane, Carbon Dioxide, Gas Hydrate, Cold Seep, Greenhouse Gases.

An offer the journal couldn’t refuse : How a Danish collaborative project paves the way for DOAJ inclusion

    No full text
The article describes a two-year project (running from 2021 to 2022) that worked on getting Danish Open Access journals indexed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). The project was run in partnership by Copenhagen Business School (CBS Library), Royal Danish Library and Aalborg University Library, in close collaboration with DOAJ. All of the journals that participated are hosted on the libraries’ Open Journal Systems (OJS). In this article the authors demonstrate some of the challenges the journals and the project group faced in the inclusion process and in the assistance the project provided, as well as learning outcomes and perspectives

Biographical Introduction and Summary of Contents

The fifteenth volume in the series presents a monograph by the famous meteorologist and astronomer Anders (in Latin: Andreas) Celsius (1701–1744), founder of the Centigrade temperature scale known as °C. From a young age, Celsius collected observations of the aurora borealis from Swedish territories. He participated in the editing of the Acta Literaria Sveciæ, the journal of the Royal Swedish Society of Learning and Sciences in Uppsala, in which a substantial number of observations were published. The journal articles in question were often quite short, with the aurora often inserted in lists of meteorological observations with little space for descriptions. By contrast, Celsius’ monograph contains a ten pages long historical introduction discussing the periodicity of the phenomenon, arguing that one should differentiate between minor and major aurorae: only the latter were visible on the European Continent and British Isles. There follows a 48-page chronological account of 316 observations made in Sweden, including Finland, during the period from 1716 to 1732. A network of observers established by the Uppsala society provided the basis for this impressive display of Swedish science. Celsius himself had made 67 of the 316 observations; the rest had been reported by sixteen other amateur and professional practitioners of science. The introduction, written by neo-Latinist and historian of science Per Pippin Aspaas, contains biographical information on each of the various observers as well as extracts of Celsius’ text in English translation
