Transforming Research Assessment for an Equitable Scientific Culture

Science plays a pivotal role in the advancement of democratic societies, and there is a growing consensus advocating for its recognition as both a common good and a fundamental human right. To effectively fulfil this role, science necessitates the trust of society, the support of policy makers, and robust international collaboration, enabling the mobility of researchers and the free flow of knowledge.
To encourage this, our responsibilities as researchers extend beyond the realm of academic publishing. They encompass science outreach, education, diplomacy, policy advocacy, entrepreneurship, and collaborations aimed at addressing global challenges or progress towards more equitable societies. However, this is hampered by current research assessment practices and the academic reward system, which perpetuate a \u27publish or perish\u27 research culture that confines the scope of science to academic publishing, fosters privilege-based biases, and prioritises quantity over quality, as well as prestige over integrity.
During this talk, I will share my personal journey as an early career researcher from the Global South, now affiliated with one of the most innovative research labs worldwide. My research journey, which was enabled by securing highly competitive funding since early stages of my career, provided me with first-hand insight into the biases and repercussions of current research assessment practices on the trajectories of researchers.
Further validating this perspective is a ground-breaking study I co-led with colleagues from the Global Young Academy, exploring research assessment for career advancement on a global scale. This study shows that research institutions worldwide heavily rely on bibliometrics to evaluate career progression, irrespective of the academic discipline. However, while more established institutions appear to be walking away from these practices, these are becoming more popular in emerging research institutions from low-middle income countries. These findings highlight the need for transformational global (inclusive) initiatives.
I am privileged to be part of one such initiative – The Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA). CoARA brings together a community of researchers and research enablers dedicated to reforming this perilous research culture. CoARA’s guiding principles centre on acknowledging the diversity of contributions and careers in science, shifting research evaluation towards qualitative aspects where research ethics and integrity are at the core, and recognizing that excellence is context-dependent, varying for each candidate, role, and projects. A standout feature of CoARA is its unwavering commitment to early career researchers, placing them at the heart of its principles, governance, structures, and interventions. Thus, ensuring that future generation of scientific leaders is well-equipped to navigate and transform the landscape of research assessment and scientific culture
Speech Synthesis Integration in Open Journal Systems
No full textPDFs of research papers are often characterized by poor accessibility and lack of speech synthesis compatibility. In this poster, we present our project that addressed these challenges by introducing a tailored EPUB format optimized for speech synthesis. The project was carried out at UiT\u27s publishing service for open access journals (Septentrio Academic Publishing) and was partially funded by the National Library of Norway.
During the course of the project, we explored two approaches to article formats compatible with speech synthesis.
The first approach involved the implementation of specialized markup intended for speech synthesis software. However, this method proved to be excessively labor-intensive for our university\u27s publishing service, prompting us to seek a more efficient alternative.Our second approach entailed converting documents from Word to EPUB via JATS XML, leveraging the versatile Pandoc tool. This streamlined approach not only simplified ongoing management but also ensured the creation of accessible files enriched with robust metadata. A noteworthy aspect of this project is its reliance on open source tools, making the approach readily transferable to other publishing services, particularly those employing Open Journal Systems
Second Book Launch and Creative Bilingual Workshop “Follow Your Heart. The School for Multipotentialites”
No full textThe overall aim of this report is to document the experience gained during the second book launch and the second experience of a creative and emotional education bilingual workshop on the book Follow Your Heart: the school for multipotentialites. Continuing along the lines of the first book launch and the co-created scientific workshop in Shepton Mallet, UK, in February 2023, the authors of the book, in collaboration with the teacher Jorinde Green (LaLa Land, Torino), organized a second event targeting primary-school aged children and their families to join for an afternoon of Follow Your Heart-inspired activities, storytelling, and collaborative work on ecological and emotional education in the Space Habitat, in via Le Chiuse 66, Torino. Building off the first book launch in the UK, which was hosted by the educational farm The Good Life Projects, this second event was held in a community center and project called “Habitat” and brought together 18 children (ages 4 to 9) and their parents and/or guardians. The proceeds from the event, which were collected through book sales, were donated to Windsor Hill Wood and to Space Habitat (our host) itself, to support educational spaces that promote quality education for all. In continuity with the previous report, this report aims to share the key lessons learned from the event and promote further discussion within the field of emotional and ecological education, in line with the project ECO_CARE
An Innovative Partnership and Methods for Knowledge Co-Production in Water Governance. The case study of the Gesso Stura Natural Park.
No full textThis report describes the education, research activities and productive dialogue that took place over a 3-day workshop at the Gesso Stura Natural Park (Italy, Piedmont Region). The project was coordinated by Prof. Eva Julia Lohse in collaboration with Prof. Margherita Paola Poto, and funded by the DAAD to establish and strengthen collaboration between the University of Bayreuth and the University of Turin. The workshop aimed to explore interdisciplinary, novel methods for (legal and political) water governance in the age of climate crisis. It investigated how co-production of knowledge can be used in environmental decision-making processes so as to reach better decisions based on a broader knowledge base, increase acceptance of protection measures by the public, and improve management of areas hit by severe droughts to guarantee access to water for communities. The workshop builds on the long-standing cooperation between the two principal researchers and their institutions regarding participation in environmental decision-making, sustainable development and water governance in Italy and Germany. This cooperation has been further developed by joint research on co-production of knowledge with indigenous and local communities to address the complex legal and social questions raised by the climate crisis

No full textThe Norwegian Registry for Spine Surgery (NORspine) was established in 2007 and extended to includeboth lumbar and cervical operations in 2012. The registry aims to improve the quality of surgicaltreatment for degenerative spine conditions. It measures patient reported outcomes (PROM) andexperiences (PREM) with validated outcome scales. The actuality, correctness, reliability, completenessand comparability of the data has been validated and is good. A report is published annually with an overview of results for all hospitals and surgical units in Norway that perform back and neck surgery.Nasjonalt kvalitetsregister for ryggkirurgi ble opprettet i 2007 og utvidet til å inkludere nakkekirurgi i 2012. Registeret har som mål å forbedre kvaliteten på kirurgisk behandling av degenerative rygg- og nakkelidelser. Registeret måler pasientrapporterte utfall (PROM) og erfaringer (PREM) med validerte skårer. Datakvaliteten er god med dokumentert aktualitet, korrekthet, reliabilitet, kompletthet og sammenlignbarhet. Årlig blir det publisert en rapport med oversikt over resultater for alle sykehus og kirurgiske enheter i Norge som utfører rygg og nakkekirurgi. 
Ocean Interconnectedness: An interdisciplinary workshop to learn from the ocean, through multisensory activities and reflections on the role of emotions in science and law: Senses & Science, Love & Law
No full textThe overall aim of this report is to document the experience and knowledge gained during the interdisciplinary workshop coordinated by Giuliana Panieri and Margherita Paola Poto on Ocean Interconnectedness. This event, organized at UiT The Arctic University of Norway on the 19th and 20th of September 2023, served as a pivotal platform for the convergence of various project outcomes. It synergized the achievements of Akma2 Ocean Senses, which advances ocean literacy through multisensory toolkits, alongside the endeavours of ECO_CARE and Follow Your Heart, dedicated to fostering emotional and ecological education and research. This event marks the kick-off of The Ocean Incubator Network, a newly established network funded by UArctic. Moreover, this workshop welcomed insights and contributions from other projects and departments, including the School of Business and Economics at the UiT The Arctic University of Norway, The Deep Network Project, and The Thalassophile Project. Together, we aim to create a dynamic and comprehensive platform for the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and collaboration in the realm of ocean-related education and awareness
