Multi-modal data generation with a deep metric variational autoencoder

    No full text
We present a deep metric variational autoencoder for multi-modal data generation. The variational autoencoder employs triplet loss in the latent space, which allows for conditional data generation by sampling new embeddings in the latent space within each class cluster. The approach is evaluated on a multi-modal dataset consisting of otoscopy images of the tympanic membrane with corresponding wideband tympanometry measurements. The modalities in this dataset are correlated, as they represent different aspects of the state of the middle ear, but they do not present a direct pixel-to-pixel correlation. The approach shows promising results for the conditional generation of pairs of images and tympanograms, and will allow for efficient data augmentation of data from multi-modal sources

Semi- and weak-supervised learning for Norwegian tree species detection

    No full text
Tree species mapping of Norwegian production forests is a time-consuming process as forest associations largely rely on manual interpretation of earth observation data. Deep learning based image segmentation techniques have the potential to improve automated tree species classification, but a major challenge is the limited quality and availability of training data. Semi-supervised techniques could alleviate the need for training label and weak supervision enables handling coarse-grained and noisy labels. In this study, we evaluated the added value of semi-supervised deep learning methods in a weakly supervised setting. Specifically, consistency training and pseudo-labeling are applied for tree species classification from aerial ortho imagery in Norway. The techniques are generic and relevant for the wider earth observation domain, especially for other land cover segmentation tasks. The results show that consistency training gives a significant performance increase. Pseudo-labeling on the other hand does not, potentially this is due to varying convergence speeds for different classes causing confirmation bias or a partial violation of the cluster assumption

    No full text
Background: The VIP Partnership Program is a health promoting and universal preventive program, developed to facilitate a better transition from lower to upper secondary school (and from primary to lower secondary school) and to promote a good learning environment. The VIP Partnership Program is developed and owned by Vestre Viken Hospital Trust/VIP Mental health in school and financed by the Norwegian Directorate of Health as part of the subsidy scheme “Mental Health in School”. Methods: This review is based on a systematic literature search in the databases Embase, Medline, Psyinfo, NORART, Cochrane, Cristin, NORA, SCOPUS and SweMed. International databases on evidence have also been searched, as well as information about the intervention from the program provider. Results from literature searches and the other information obtained were reviewed to identify Nordic effect studies, international systematic reviews and eventually other Norwegian studies of the intervention. Results: The results include an assessment of the programs description, present efficacy study, research methodological quality and implementation quality. The VIP Partnership Program is considered well described and has a broad professional-based framework, while no specified theoretical foundation. The intervention offers some implementation support by offering information meetings and three-hours training. Two Norwegian efficacy studies have been conducted, both with a quasi-experimental design. The first study indicates a significant improvement for schools using the VIP Partnership Program on one outcome variable - social classroom environment, as compared to control schools not implementing the program. The effect was small, and as the VIP Partnership Program was introduced in some of the schools prior to baseline and the nesting in data was ignored in the analyses, the findings are dubious. The second study showed positive outcomes at post-test for happiness and joint depression/anxiety symptoms among students with no or low anxiety at baseline, but not among student with high anxiety. No significant effects were found at six-months follow-up. There were no significant improvements on loneliness.More studies with a stronger design and analytical approach, and several relevant outcome variables tested are needed to draw any conclusions on program effects in lower and upper secondary schools. In addition, the theoretical rationale for the program should be pointed and justified, and the implementation strategy further developed. Conclusion: The VIP Partnership Program is classified at evidence level 3 – measures with some documen-tation of effect.

CAGE13-3 Cruise Report: Sub-seabed CO2 Storage: Impact on Marine Ecosystems (ECO2) (A 7th Framework Programme EU project) PART I.

    No full text
The ECO2 project sets out to assess the risks associated with the storage of CO2 below the seabed. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) is regarded as a key technology for the reduction of CO2 emissions from power plants and other sources at the European and international level. The proposed project will assess the likelihood of leakage and impact of leakage on marine ecosystems. As part of the ECO2 project, cruise CAGE13-3 intend to acquire a 3D seismic volume (which will act as monitor along with the 3D cube collected in 2011) from the Snøhvit carbon capture area. In addition, we will repeat some of the lines twice and in reversed direction in order to study the repeatability of the P-Cable acquisition for monitoring purposes. The primary objective of the hydrological and biogeochemical sampling in the Snøhvit area is to study any possible effects of a Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) site on the water column and on the bottom sediment. The cruise may be known as: HH_2013_ECO2_
