    No full text
Focus: To gain an appreciation of ocean depth using ideas of scale and physical education. Learning objectives: With these TWO activities, pupils will begin to understand (and feel) how deep the ocean can be in relation to their own size and height. They will get a feeling of the difference between height (above ground) and depth (in relation to water). Key words: Height, (ocean) depth.

    Get PDF
Arne Østring’s flash fiction «Out of the Silence» could certainly be read as a slightly comical text about a Japanese kamikaze pilot’s – a suicide bomber’s – impossible raid against a militarily superior enemy, but more interestingly the text balances a war-logic and a rational psychology, it unpacks the premise and backstory of kamikaze war, and it situates a suicide bomber as what sociologist Norbert Elias called homo clausus: the isolated, enclosed individual who is all alone in the world. And finally, the text demonstrates that a reading of literary suicides must always be a reading of the text.

    Get PDF
How can we interpret Bjarte Breiteig\u27s short story «Der nede sørger de ikke» (They Don\u27t Mourn Down There)? The short story depicts two teenage boys who, seemingly without reason, vandalize the arts and crafts rooms at their school. However, on a symbolic level, their destructive actions are connected to themes of suicide, creativity, and individuality.

    No full text
This article analyzes the theme of suicide in NRK\u27s successful youth drama Rod Knock (Rådebank). Departing from a genre perspective on youth drama conventions within Norwegian and Nordic public service broadcasting drama, the article analyzes how the series constructs a compassionate gaze that seeks both to recognize the impossibility of understanding the act of suicide and to show conditions for actions that may contribute to survival.Denne artikkelen analyserer selvmordstematikken i NRKs suksessfulle ungdomsdrama Rådebank.

What Spanish can tell us about the syntax of eventives vs. stative verbal predicates

    No full text
The main goal of this article is to argue and provide support for the distinction between eventive and stative verbal predicates being encoded in the syntax. More specifically, following Travis (1991, 2010, MacDonald 2008, Kardos & Farkas 2022), I provide arguments for the existence of an aspectual functional projection situated between Voice and VP: AspP. I argue that eventive verbal predicates project AspP and stative verbal predicates do not. Its syntactic presence serves as input to semantics giving rise to a dynamic predicate, a predicate that entails (some amount of) change along a scale, based on scalar approaches to eventive verbal predicates (Hay et al. 1999, Kennedy & Levin 2008, Beavers 2011, 2013, among others). Empirically, I discuss two phenomena from Spanish: hacerlo "do so" substitution and verbal interfixes, like ot in fregotear "to scrub at" (vs. fregar "to scrub"). I argue that hacer selects for AspP while the verbal interfixes head Asp. Support for the main proposal that there is a syntactic distinction between eventives and statives emerges from the ungrammaticality of hacerlo when it takes a stative verbal antecedent and the fact that the output of interfixation does not give rise to stative verbal predicates, only eventive verbal predicatesEl propósito principal de esta artículo es ofrecer argumentos y apoyo para una distinción sintáctica entre los predicados verbales eventivos y estativos.

Bowhead whales spend more time in waters with colder sea surface temperatures

    No full text
Marine mammals are under potential threats due to rapid ocean warming. Such threats may be especially challenging for the bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus), an endemic arctic cetacean, because it is limited in how much further north it can go. To explore the effects of global warming on this species, data from 84 bowhead whales in Baffin Bay – West Greenland tagged with satellite linked radio transmitters during the 11 years between 2001 and 2011 were analysed. With this time series, it is possible to investigate the effect of increasing temperature of preferred water mass temperature and temperature at depth where most bowhead feeding occurs through sea surface temperature (SST) on bowhead whale behaviour. We used daily positions and daily SST to develop seasonal Tweedie generalised linear mixed models to model the duration that bowhead whales spend in 20 x 20 km cells as a function of SST. The model was fitted on a much finer spatial and temporal scale than in previous studies, thus enabling a more detailed understanding of behaviour relative to water temperature. Our study demonstrates that bowhead whales spend more time in water with colder surface temperatures, suggesting that as waters continue to warm, bowheads may move further north, potentially reducing their overall available habitat

In 2022 a gender-neutral singular pronoun hen was introduced through a spelling reform of Norwegian Nynorsk and Bokmål (origin: from Finnish trad. hän via Swedish hen, officially introduced into Swedish in 2015). In this article, we present findings from a survey on hen sent to all employees at the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences during the public hearing period prior to the spelling reform. The analysis shows a majority of the respondents (N=645) supporting the introduction of hen, across age groups (range 20–70), but with some differences according to gender and department affiliation. The reported use of hen was also high. In a quantitative content analysis of free text comments, we see that two categories of arguments dominate among respondents supporting the introduction of hen: The first is a ‘political’ subcategory with comments emphasizing the rights of persons who do not define themselves as female or male. The second is a ‘pragmatic’ subcategory where hen is referred to as a practical alternative to other gender-neutralizing Norwegian expressions, but in which respondents do not necessarily presuppose an understanding of gender beyond the binary. The arguments against hen follow a similar divide. In a dominant ‘pragmatic’ subcategory, respondents express that the new pronoun is an unnecessary addition to the current range of gender-neutral expressions, and in a ‘political’ subcategory respondents express negative value assessments of the reform and pronoun. The article documents patterns in reported language use and reported attitudes about a particular language change at a particular point in time, from a particular social group (HE employees), and the results provide a starting point for future investigations of the usage pattern and attitudes to the pronoun hen in Norwegian.I 2022 vart hen innført som kjønnsnøytralt pronomen i nynorsk og bokmål.

Playing rogues: Picaresque experiences in videogames

    No full text
This article explores how video games, with no apparent connection to the literary rogue, still articulate Picaresque episodes and simulate Picaresque experiences through their intended gameplay and worldbuilding. These experiences are a specific expression of the combination of mechanics, narrative, and the agency of the player around a defined type of character, the rogue. They show how pervasive the influence of Picaresque Literature is, influencing design choices and informing key forms of being and acting in virtual worlds. This paper aims to define what a Picaresque experience in video games is and how it is possible to produce them. To achieve this, three video games will be analysed to show the different specific tools video games use to enable these experiences. The analyses will be supported by a theoretical framework based on existing bibliography about agency, videoludic narrative, mechanics, and Picaresque Literature with the objective of offering a comprehensive description of Picaresque experiences while also explaining them as a transmedia phenomenon that demonstrates the influence of Picaresque Literature in video games
