Overload Mitigation of Inertial Grid-Forming Inverters Under Frequency Excursions

    No full text
Grid-forming (GFM) inverters play a critical role in stabilizing future power grids. However, their synchronization is inherently coupled with frequency support, which poses a challenge to prevent overloading while maintaining synchronization. While existing literature has proposed strategies to mitigate the overload of GFM inverters during frequency excursions, these typically focus on limiting primary frequency regulation and overlook their inertial contribution, limiting their effectiveness. The present work addresses this gap by analyzing three overload mitigation strategies that dynamically adjust both primary frequency regulation and inertia. The main contribution of this work is formal analysis of the control structures, providing insight into the tuning process, dynamic behavior, and inherent trade-offs. The performance of these strategies is evaluated under grid frequency excursions and oscillations, focusing on their ability to limit overloads and ensure seamless recovery. Simulation results are validated through experimental testing. This research was funded by the Basque Government (GISEL research group IT1522-22)

Doing conferences differently: A decentralised multi-hub approach for ecological and social sustainability

    No full text
Published: June 23, 2025Conferences are invaluable for career progression, offering unique opportunities for networking, collaboration, and learning. However, there are challenges associated with the traditional in-person conference format. For example, there is a significant ecological impact from attendees’ travel behaviour, and there are social inequities in conference attendance, with historically marginalised groups commonly facing barriers to participation. Innovative practices that enable academic conferences to be ‘done differently’ are crucial for addressing these ecological and social sustainability challenges. However, while some such practices have emerged in recent years, largely due to the COVID-19 pandemic, little research has been done on their effectiveness. Our study addresses this gap using a mixed methods approach to analyse a real-world decentralised multi-hub conference held in 2023, comparing it to traditional in-person conference and fully online conference scenarios. The decentralised multi-hub format consists of local in-person hubs in different locations around the world, each with a unique local programme developed around a shared core global programme; there is no single centralised point of control. We calculated the CO2 emissions from transport for each scenario and found the decentralised multi-hub conference had significantly lower emissions than a traditional in-person conference, but higher emissions than a fully online conference. We also interviewed 14 local hub organisers and attendees to gain their perspectives about the ecological and social sustainability benefits of the decentralised multi-hub format. We found that the more accessible and inclusive format attracted a more diverse range of attendees, meaning that the benefits attributed to conference attendance were able to be shared more equitably. These findings demonstrate the ecological and social sustainability benefits of doing conferences differently, and can be used as further evidence in the argument to help transition conferences to a more desirable state in terms of ecological and social sustainability.Funding: The author(s) received no specific funding for this work

Representación y uso de las redes sociales en las series de televisión

    No full text

Adimen Artifiziala. PTIA eredu kimioinformatikoa endekapenezko gaixotasun neurologikoen kontrako botikak aurkitzeko

    No full text
Cheminformatics is part of theoretical chemistry and consists of the use of computer techniques in pharmaceutical chemical science problems. This work presents the possible application of the IFPTIA methodology (Information Fusion + Perturbation Theory + Machine Learning) in the field of medical chemistry. Specifically, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Friedreich ataxia and Huntington degenerative neurological diseases have been studied. In the predictive model, the sequences of proteins that may be related to them and the Protein Interaction Network (PES) of the different regions of the brain (entorrinal cortex (CR), hippocampus (HIP), central temple curve (CEP), rear cortex (CSC), upper forehead curve (BB) and visual cortex (CB) have been considered. The statistical parameters of the model obtained have been good; Sn (%) = 77.76, Sp (%) = 72.69 and Ac (%) = 73.83 for training; and Sp (%) = 72.66, Sn (%) = 77.95 and Ac (%) = 73.84 for validation. These diseases are incurable and from the moment the symptoms appear, the patients are weakened until the neurons in the brain die. Among the usual problems that this entails are problems of poor movement and brain functioning. In this sense, cheminformatic models can be a very useful technique in the development of new drugs, in efforts to reduce animals for testing and, in general, to avoid resources. They can predict the probability that a compound may or may not be active in degenerative neurological diseases. These models have therefore been shown to be very useful tools for understanding the mechanisms behind these diseases, and this has led to the opening of promising therapeutic pathways.; Kimioinformatika kimika teorikoaren atal bat da, zientzia kimiko-farmazeutikoetako arazoetan teknika informatikoak erabiltzean datzana. Lan honetan, IFPTIA (Informazioa Fusionatzea+Perturbazio Teoria+Ikasketa Automatikoa) metodologiak kimika medikoaren esparruan izan dezakeen aplikazioa aurkeztu dugu. Zehazki, alzheimerra, parkinsona, alboko esklerosi amiotrofikoa (AEA), Friedreichen ataxia eta Huntingtonen endekapenezko gaixotasun neurologikoak aztertu ditugu. Eraiki dugun eredu kimioinformatikoan, kontuan hartu ditugu gaixotasun horiekin erlazioa izan dezaketen proteinen sekuentziak eta garuneko zenbait eskualdetako (kortex entorrinala -KE-, hipokanpoa -HIP-, erdiko lokiko bihurgunea -ELB-, atzeko zingulu-kortexa -AZK-, goi-bekokiko bihurgunea -GBB- eta kortex bisuala -KB-) proteinen elkarrekintza-sarea (PES). Lortu dugun eredurik egokiena diskriminatzaile lineala izanik, doitasun-metrikak onak izan dira; Sn(%)=77,76, Sp(%)=72,69 eta Ac(%)=73,83 entrenamendurako, eta Sp(%)=72,66, Sn(%)=77,95 eta Ac(%)=73,84 balioen berrespenerako. Gaixotasun horiek sendaezinak dira, eta, sintomak agertzen diren momentutik aurrera, gaixoak ahulduz doaz, garuneko neuronak hiltzen diren arte. Horrek dakartzan arazo ohikoetako batzuk mugimendu eta garun-funtzionamendu okerrak dira. Alde horretatik, eredu kimioinformatikoak teknika guztiz erabilgarriak izan daitezke farmako berriak garatzeko, entseguetan animalia gutxiago erabiltzeko eta, oro har, baliabideak saihesteko ahaleginetan. Konposatu batek endekapenezko gaixotasun neurologikoetan aktiboa izateko edo ez izateko daukan probabilitatea iragar dezake ereduak. Beraz, frogatu dugu gaixotasun horien atzean dauden mekanismoak ulertzeko erreminta os

Technology, education and critical media literacy: potential, challenges, and opportunities

    No full text
This study examines the impact of technology within media education, media literacy, and educommunication, and explores how these fields are perceived and understood by students and academic experts, focusing on the development of critical competencies and critical media literacy. Based on semi-structured in-depth interviews with leading experts in the field of critical media literacy, and a survey conducted with 141 university students in Communication and Education programs, this study explores how recent technological advances are linked to challenges in information consumption—such as disinformation, fake news, incidental exposure to information, and deepfakes—as well as the challenges and opportunities these issues present within educational contexts. The results reveal that, although such technologies provide opportunities to improve teaching–learning processes, their inclusion in the curriculum is limited and often superficial. In addition, we identify shortcomings in how teachers are trained to manage these tools effectively, hindering the development of critical thinking by students. The conclusions suggest a need for critical media literacy that not only educates students in the use of technologies but also allows them to question and evaluate the content they consume, all within an ethical and reflective framework that promotes participatory and critical citizenship

Low emission zones and their adaptability to small and medium-sized cities

    No full text
Through this thesis the adaptability of Low Emission Zones in small and medium-sized European cities will be explored, with an especial focus on the Spanish case. Despite the popularity of such measures as a key strategy to combat urban pollution, current legislation and guidelines follow a one-size-fits-all approach, which creates adaptation challenges for smaller cities. Following a bibliometric review, a comparative analysis between the two types of cities and three case studies, this project identifies clear variations in the design and planning processes, stakeholder participation and complementary measures associated with Low Emission Zones. The results show that smaller cities benefit from more holistic and participatory strategies, but that national guidelines, such as the Spanish, promote a strict approach that is not easily adapted to local realities.Tesi honen bidez, Europako hiri txiki eta ertainetako Isuri Gutxiko Eremuen moldagarritasuna aztertuko da, Espainiako kasuan arreta berezia jarriz. Horrelako neurriek hiri kutsadurari aurre egiteko funtsezko estrategia gisa duten ospearen arren, egungo legediak eta gidalerroek ikuspegi bakarrari jarraitzen diote, eta horrek hiri txikietara egokitzeko erronkak sortzen ditu. Berrikuspen bibliometrikoa, bi hiri moten arteko azterketa konparatiboa eta hiru kasu-azterketa egin ondoren, proiektu honek aldaketa nabarmenak identifikatzen ditu diseinu eta plangintza prozesuetan, alderdi interesdunen parte-hartzean eta Isuri Gutxiko Eremuei lotutako neurri osagarrietan. Hiri txikiek estrategia holistikoagoak eta parte-hartzaileagoak dituzte, baina gidalerro nazionalek, Espainiakoak kasu, tokiko errealitateetara erraz egokitzen ez den ikuspegi zorrotza sustatzen dute.

    No full text

Bootstrap ez-parametrikoa algoritmoen errendimenduaren konparaketarako estatistika bayestarraren alternatiba gisa

Adimen artifiziala eremu ia gehienetan txertatzen ari den garai honetan, ezinbestekoa da erabiltzen ditugun algoritmoen errendimenduen konparaketak egitea. Sarritan, algoritmo baten bitartez lortutako emaitzak erabilitako datuen izaeraren eta algoritmoen estokastizitatearen arabera aldakorrak dira, eta horrek konparaketa zailtzen du. Testuinguru horretan, beraz, algoritmoen arteko konparaketa egitean, lortutako ziurgabetasunaren kuantifikazioa alderdi garrantzitsua da, baina gehienetan ez zaio nahikoa garrantzi ematen. Izan ere, ziurgabetasunaren kuantifikaziorako urteetan zehar erabili diren estatistika frekuentistako hipotesi-probek gabezia nabariak dituzte arlo honetan. Alternatiba gisa, estatistika bayestarra da soluziorik onartuena gaur egun, baina badira beste metodo batzuk oraindik esploratu ez direnak. Artikulu honetan, ziurgabetasuna azaltzeko, bootstrap ez-parametrikoaren erabilera aztertuko dugu, eta metodo horren portaera estatistika bayestarrarekin alderatu eta antzekotasunak eta desberdintasunak agerian jarriko ditugu.; In times where artificial intelligence is being incorporated into almost all application domains, it is essential to make comparisons between the results of the algorithms we use. In these comparisons, the quantification of the uncertainty of the results obtained is an important aspect, but it is generally not given sufficient importance. In fact, the frequentist statistical tests that have been used over the years have obvious shortcomings in this regard. As an alternative, Bayesian statistics is the most widely accepted solution today, but there are other methods that have not yet been explored in depth. In this article we will examine the use of non-parametric bootstrap to illustrate this uncertainty, and we will compare the behavior of this method with that of Bayesian statistics, underlining the similarities and differences

The Concept of the Neutrality of the Parliamentary Speakership and Presidency. The United Kingdom versus Continental Europe

    No full text
This article analyses the neutrality of the parliamentary presidency by comparing the models of the speakership in the United Kingdom and the presidency in France, Italy,Portugal and Spain in continental Europe. The article considers the various bodies that direct parliamentary work: the speakership and the presidency as one-person bodies, and the collective bodies that support their work in continental Europe. It reviews the procedure for electing the Speaker and the President and the different functions which they perform. This reveals similarities and relevant differences. The differences are found especially in the preparation of debates and maintaining order in the parliamentary chamber, functions that they are able to perform due to their independence and neutrality. The way this independence is organised is different in the models under consideration, which can be explained by the different historical evolution of the parliaments in these countries.Proyecto Biografía colectiva and análisis prosopográfico más allá del Parlamento (PGC2018-095712-B-100), financed by Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (Spain).
