Recycling fiber-reinforced polyamide waste from the automotive industry: Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of an advanced pyrolysis process to reclaim glass fibers and valuable chemicals

    No full text
The generation of pyrolysis liquids and gases with poor quality is a limiting factor for the development of the recycling process of fiber-reinforced plastic waste. In this article, the life cycle assessment (LCA) of an advanced two-step pyrolysis process to recycle glass fiber-reinforced polyamide waste is presented. First, the solid waste is pyrolyzed by heating up at 3 °C/min to 500 °C in a tank reactor. The generated volatiles are subsequently thermally cracked at 900 °C in a tubular packed bed reactor. The process is able to reclaim the glass fibers similarly to the conventional one reactor pyrolysis, while producing liquids and gases with better properties. The large quantity of oxygenated pyrolysis oils generated in the conventional pyrolysis are cracked into gaseous hydrocarbons, CO, CO2 and a minor aqueous liquid. The pyrolysis gases become the main product of the process, presenting an interesting composition of hydrogen (39.9 vol.%), methane (22.5 vol.%), carbon monoxide (19.5 vol.%) and ethylene (10.8 vol.%). The LCA shows that advanced pyrolysis demonstrates better environmental performance than conventional pyrolysis, avoiding fossil resource scarcity and reducing global warming by half and human carcinogenic toxicity by one third.- Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (project PID2023-151187OB-I00) - Basque Government (IT1554-22, consolidated research groups

Liquid biopsy metabolomics as a novel strategy for biomarker discovery in Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC) and Ckolangiocarcinoma (CCA)

    No full text
209 p.Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is the most significant risk factor for the development of cholangiocarcinoma (CCA); up to 20% of patients with PSC develop CCA during their lifetime. Currently, the accuracy of diagnostic methods for PSC-CCA is far from satisfactory, resulting in late-stage disease diagnosis, when no curative treatments are applicable. Hence, CCA is responsible for more than 30% of PSC-related deaths. Recently, metabolomics has led to development of a novel accurate biomarker identification strategy, given that specific changes in serum concentrations of certain metabolites constitute a global phenotype. In this study, we aimed to identify precise non-invasive PSC biomarkers, for the early diagnosis and prediction of CCA by the analysis of low molecular weight metabolitesthrough new high throughput techniques. Thus, this novel liquid-biopsy strategy may help in the personalized care of patients at risk of CCA, such as PSC

Eco-geomorphic modelling response of tidal marshes to sea level rise and changes in suspended sediment supply

    No full text
Tidal marshes are coastal systems that provide valuable ecosystem services, highlighting coastal protection and carbon burial. For centuries, these dynamic ecosystems have kept pace with sea level rise through organic and mineral matter accumulation. In the current situation of accelerated sea-level rise and changes in suspended sediment concentrations, the evolution of these systems has gained special attention across scientific fields. Several methodologies like process-based models and machine learning algorithms have been applied to assess the evolution of tidal marshes in different sea level rise and suspended sediment concentration scenarios. However, up to now, these methodologies have not been integrated to assess and model the evolution of marshes. In this study, we have successfully combined a machine learning algorithm with a dynamic process-based eco-geomorphic model to assess and evaluate potential distributions of three Spanish marshes, under a selection of potential sea-level rise and suspended sediment concentrations which may unfold during this century. Results obtained from this study have proven that through the integration of existing methodological approaches and their adaptation to test contexts, we can better simulate the potential evolution of marsh systems on a local scale considering potential sea level rise and suspended sediment concentration changes. Under current sediment supply and public land availability, marshes in Oka estuary, Bay of Santander, and Cadiz Bay could lose 6.7–28.9 %, 33.1–87.5 %, and 41–86.4 % of their area, respectively. The integrated marsh evolution model presented in this work can be extrapolated and/or customised to other coastal and marine systems, fostering its reusability. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.This research is part of the PRE2022-102042 funded by MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and by the Mar\u00EDa de Maeztu Unit of Excellence 2023-2027 Ref. 328 p.Gaixotasun Zeliakoak (GZ) eragin negatiboa du pertsonen bizi kalitatean, besteak beste, aspektu sozialean. Bizi kalitatearen okertzean eragina dute populazio orokorraren eta baita gaixotasunaren maneiuan parte hartzen duten pertsonen (ostalaritzako langileen eta gaixotasuna duten pertsonen sostengu diren pertsonen, besteak beste) ezagutza eskasak. Gaixotasuna duten pertsonen ezagutza ere ez da beti egokia eta ondorioz, informazio bila aritzen dira etengabe.Nutrizio Hezkuntzak (NH) ezagutzak eta portaerak hobetzeko balio dezake, baita elikadurarekin erlazionatutako patologien inguruko gizartearen kontzientzia handitzeko ere. Horregatik, GZ duten pertsonen inklusio soziala sustatzeko, populazio zeliakoaren eta populazio orokorraren zeliakiaren ezagutzak eta horrekiko portaerak hobetzeko estrategia interesgarria izan daiteke NH.Hortaz, Tesiaren hipotesia ondorengoa da: populazio zeliakoari eta baita populazio orokorrari zuzendutako NH programak gai dira indibiduoen ezagutzak eta portaerak hobetzeko. Hori horrela, NHren bidez, bai populazio orokorrari zuzendutakoaren bidez, eta baita zeliakia duten pertsonei zuzendutakoaren bidez, populazio zeliakoaren inklusio soziala bultzatu daiteke. Hipotesi hori frogatzeko, Tesiaren helburu nagusia publiko desberdinei bideratutako GZ eta GGDren inguruko NH programak diseinatu eta ebaluatzea da. Publikoa gizarte orokorra, etorkizuneko ostalaritza langileak, GZ duten pertsonak eta euren sostengu diren pertsonak izan dira.Populazio orokorrari zuzendutako bi esku-hartze diseinatu eta ebaluatu dira. Lehenengoa, eskolako haurrei zuzenduta zegoen, Ikerkuntzan Oinarritutako Ikerkuntza deritzon STEAM/STEM metodologiaren bidez garatu zen 4 astetan zehar eta 299 haurrek parte hartu zuten. Esku-hartze hau gai izan zen dieta orekatuari buruzko ezagutzak eta jarrerak hobetzeko, baita GZri eta GGDri buruzkoak ere. Gainera, haurren zientziagatiko interesa sustatu zen. Bigarrena, Derrigorrezko Bigarren Hezkuntzako ikasleei zuzenduta zegoen, Proiektuetan Oinarritutako Ikaskuntza deritzon STEM metodologiaren bidez garatu zen eta 5 hilabeteko iraupena izan zuen. 29 gaztek parte hartu zuten. Esku-hartze hau gai izan zen GZ eta GGDri buruzko kontzientzia areagotzeko eta metodo zientifikoa garatzen ikasteko erabilgarria izan zen. Etorkizuneko ostalaritza langileei zuzendutako beste esku-hartze bat diseinatu eta ebaluatu zen ere. Bertan, ostalaritzarekin erlazionatutako Lanbide Heziketako graduetako 100 ikaslek parte hartu zuten egun bateko saio batean. Saio hau eraginkorra izan zen GZ eta GGDri buruzko ezagutzak areagotzeko eta kontaktu gurutzatuari buruzko kontzientzia areagotzeko.Azkenik, GZ duten pertsonei eta euren sostengu diren pertsonei zuzendutako sare sozialen bidezko esku-hartze bat diseinatu eta ebaluatu zen. Horretarako, lehenik sare sozialetan aktiboak diren pertsona horien ezagutzak, kezkak eta beharrak zeintzuk diren aztertu zen 300 inkesten azterketaren bidez, eta ondoren, esku-hartzea diseinatu eta ebaluatu zen. Esku-hartzean 93 pertsonek parte hartu zuten (GZ zutenak eta sostengu zirenak) eta 6 astetan burutu zen. Programa hau gai izan zen GZri eta GGDri buruzko ezagutzak hobetzeko eta elikagai bat aukeratzean eta kontaktu gurutzatua saihestean zuten konfiantza areagotzeko.Tesi honek frogatu du NH esku-hartzeak eraginkorrak direla populazio zeliakoaren eta baita populazio orokorraren ezagutzak eta jarrerak hobetzeko. Honek GZ duten pertsonen inklusio soziala bultzatzen duela uste da eta GZren tratamendua dietatik haratago doala azpimarratzen du

Consequently, its integration into the field of education and professional practice is recommended, in order to create and maintain healthier and non-violent relationships

Permutation-based combinatorial optimization problems in Fourier space

    No full text
259 p.In this thesis, permutation-based combinatorial optimization problems are analyzed under a fairly uncommon framework: Fourier space. We give the Fourier characterization of three problems: the quadratic assignment problem, the linear ordering problem and the traveling salesperson problem. Then, the definition of these problems in Fourier space is used to reveal a number of properties that remained unseen with their usual definition. Among others, the topics of intrinsic dimension, intersection between problems, equivalent instances and rankings produced by the problems are studied. The Fourier decomposition of the linear ordering problem is also used to decompose the problem into a P and an NP-hard component. Using this decomposition, it is experimentally observed how the behavior of a number of constructive algorithms degrades as the problem transits from P to NP-hardness.This work is supported by the Basque Government (BERC 2022-2025 and IT1504-22) and by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness MINECO (projects PID2022-137442NB-I00 and PID2023-149195NBI00). No full text

    No full text

Impact of exotic forest plantations on native plant species

    No full text
Native forests are essential for biodiversity conservation but their area is decreasing all around the world. In the northern Iberian Peninsula, over the past centuries the expansion of fast-growing exotic species for timber industry has increased rapidly. Such land use changes could have a negative impact on plant species composition due to changes in forest management, soil characteristics or landscape. Specifically, in the Basque Country, the predominant Pinus radiata plantations are now being replaced by eucalypt plantations. The main objective of this study was to analyse the impact of forest management on the composition of plant species in forest systems and to identify the drivers that influence species composition. The landscape, stand and soil characteristics and species composition of the three forest systems (native forests, pine plantations and eucalypt plantations) were compared using ANOVA, the Kruskal-Wallis test and a bootstrap method. Multivariate statistics were used to analyse the stand and species distribution, and to identify the influencing factors. The results indicated that eucalypt plantations exhibited a significantly lower vegetation cover in the upper layers (17.69 ±.34%; 53.61 ± 1.04%), number of species (15.45 ± 0.86 species), and pH value (4.13 ± 0.08), than pine plantations (32.19 ± 4.53%; 58.58 ± 2.77%; 19.75 ± 1.29 species; 4.76 ± 0.11, respectively) and native forest (47.42 ± 3.67%; 82.67 ± 3.96%; 26.8 ± 1.55 species; 5.32 ± 0.15, respectively). Moreover, species composition was significantly different among the three forest systems, being forest specialist species mainly observed in native forests and generalist species in forest plantations. Furthermore, soil pH, presence of water in the surrounding landscape, distance to watercourses, aspect and forest system were identified as influencing factors in plant species composition. Therefore, native forests represent the optimal choice for the conservation of native plant species in forest systems, while eucalypt plantations are not an appropriate option for this purpose; thus, it is necessary to find alternatives to exotic plantations, such as native species plantations.Open Access funding provided thanks to the CRUE-CSIC agreement with Springer Nature
