Selective chemical recycling of polyhydroxybutyrate into high-value hydroxy acid using the taurine organocatalyst

    No full text
Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are receiving significant attention due to their biobased origin, biodegradability, and excellent barrier properties. However, their high cost compared to traditional plastics necessitates the development of recycling technologies to retain their value post-use. Despite being thermoplastics, PHAs are difficult to recycle mechanically due to their narrow processing window, particularly for polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), and conventional chemical recycling routes often lead to non-selective degradation and dehydration to crotonic acid, yielding complex product mixtures with limited valorization potential. In contrast, this study presents a selective chemical recycling method for PHB that suppresses dehydration pathways by using naturally occurring taurine as an organocatalyst. Taurine outperforms other catalyst families, such as Brønsted acids and bases, in terms of depolymerization yield and selectivity, achieving 98% enantiomerically pure 3-hydroxybutyric acid (HBA) in the optimized process. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations provided insights into the pH-dependent HBA elimination mechanisms demonstrating that taurine does not play a role in this process under very basic nor acidic conditions. A liquid–liquid extraction technique was developed to separate HBA from by-product crotonic acid, successfully maintaining the R-enantiomeric form of the recovered HBA. This method is applicable to both synthetic PHB and biological PHB samples, including copolymers and blends. Overall, this taurine-catalyzed PHB depolymerization approach inhibits the formation of dehydrated by-products and offers a promising solution for selective recycling of PHB into valuable chiral building blocks. The authors acknowledge the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation: PID2022-138199NB-I00 funded by MCIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033, as well as the funding of the State Research Agency (AEI) with numbers TED2021-129852B-C21 and TED2021-129852B-C22 and the Basque Government with number GC IT-1667-22.

    No full text

71 p. -- Bibliogr.: p. 38-41[EUS] Lan honetan zehar, talde-kirolek haurren sozializazioan duten eragina aztertu da. Hain zuzen ere, metodologia kualitatiboan oinarritutako lanketa etnografiko baten bidez erlazio hori aztertu da, parte-hartuzko behaketa erabiliz Lehen Hezkuntzako 4. mailako ikasgela baten egunerokotasunean sozializazioa ikertuz. Azterketa honen abiapuntu gisa, hurrengo hipotesi nagusia jarraitu egin da: “talde-kiroletan parte-hartzeak Lehen Hezkuntzako ikasleen sozializazio-prozesua errazten du”. Testuinguru honetan, talde-kirolek haurren eskolako bizitza sozialean dituzten hainbat onura aurkeztu dira, talde-kirolen eta sozializazio egokiaren arteko erlazioa baieztatzea ahalbidetu dutenak. Hala ere, emaitzak ingurune zehatz honetara lotuta egon daitezkeenez, ezin izan dira talde txiki honetatik ateratako ondorioak gizarteko talde guztietara orokortu. [EN] Throughout this work, the influence of team sports on children's socialization has been analyzed. Precisely, through an ethnographic work based on qualitative methodology, this relationship has been analyzed, using participatory observation to investigate socialization in the daily life of a 4th grade primary school classroom. As a starting point for this analysis, the main hypothesis was that "participation in team sports facilitates the socialization process of primary school students". In this context, a series of benefits of team sports in the school social life of boys and girls have been presented, which have allowed affirming the relationship between team sports and adequate socialization. However, as the results may be linked to this particular environment, it has not been possible to generalize the conclusions drawn from this small group to all groups in society. Therefore, to obtain a definitive conclusion it would be necessary to analyze samples from different contexts to make the results more meaningful

Environmental and economic assessment of large-scale hydrogen supply chains across Europe: LOHC vs other hydrogen technologies

    No full text
The transition to decarbonized energy systems positions hydrogen as a critical vector for achieving climate neutrality, yet its large-scale transportation and storage remain key challenges. This study presents a comprehensive life cycle assessment (LCA) and economic analysis of large-scale H2 supply chains, evaluating the liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) system based on benzyltoluene/perhydro-benzyltoluene (H0-BT/H12-BT) against conventional technologies: compressed gaseous hydrogen (CGH2), liquid hydrogen (LH2) and liquid ammonia (LNH3). The analysis includes multiple H2 transportation scenarios across Europe, considering the steps: conditioning, sea transportation, post-processing and land distribution by truck or pipeline. Environmentally, LOHC currently faces higher environmental impacts than CGH2, driven by energy-intensive dehydrogenation process. Truck-based distribution further amplifies impacts, particularly over long distances, while pipeline-based distribution significantly reduces the environmental burdens where infrastructure exists. Sensitivity analysis reveals that using H2 for dehydrogenation heat lowers process-level impacts but increases overall supply chain impacts, questioning its net environmental benefit. Economically, LOHC remains competitive despite high dehydrogenation costs, benefiting from low sea transportation expenses, compatibility with existing fossil fuel infrastructure and potential for future CAPEX and OPEX improvements. While CGH2 outperforms LH2 and LNH3, avoiding energy-intensive liquefaction and cracking, its storage requirements add considerable costs. For land distribution, LOHC trucks are optimal at lower capacities, whereas repurposed natural gas pipelines favour CGH2 at higher scale, reducing costs by up to 84 %. Despite current trade-offs, the scalability, flexibility and synergies with existing infrastructure position LOHC as a promising solution for long-distance H2 transport, contingent on technological maturation to mitigate dehydrogenation impacts. This research was supported by the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), Basque Government (Project: IT1554-22), and Clean Hydrogen Partnership (grant agreement: 101111964). Fully Recyclable Pluripotent Networks for 3D Printing Enabled by Dissociative Dynamic Bonds

    No full text
Additive manufacturing (AM) has risen in popularity due to its ability to produce complex shapes in a material-efficient way. However, to produce objects with advanced properties, complex multimaterial strategies are often employed. This one-polymer-one-property paradigm significantly slows down the application of AM, and in particular of fused deposition modeling (FDM), for manufacturing of functional objects. In this study advantage of pluripotency in materials is taken, i.e., the ability to attain different properties from a single stock, to afford mechanically tunable 3D printed dynamic thermosets (moduli from 2 MPa – 3 GPa, 1500× increase, Stress at break from 2 to 70 MPa, 35× increase). To do so, FDM-compatible CO2-derived dissociative polymer networks are designed that undergo a dynamic reaction-induced phase-separation (DRIPS). This strategy enables the control of the size of the rigid phase with a simple post-printing thermal treatment, cascading in spatially patterned mechanical properties. This study showcases new directions for the 3D printing communities, with deep implications in soft robotics and compliant mechanics. The authors would like to express thanks for the financial support provided by the NIPU-EJD project; this project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under Marie Skłodowska-Curie Grant Agreement No. 955700.

    No full text

Lan-neurri horiek urriaren 8ko 1026/2024 Errege Dekretuaren bidez garatu dira, enpresetan LGTBI pertsonen berdintasunerako eta diskriminaziorik ezerako neurri planifikatuak garatzen dituena. LGTBI plan bat nola egin behar den da ikerketaren ardatza. 4/2023 Legeak argitaratu zenetik urtebeteko egokitzapen-epea ezarri zuen, 2024ko otsailaren 2an bete dena, 50 langiletik gorako enpresek LGTBI pertsonen aurkako jazarpena edo indarkeria artatzeko jarduera-protokolo bat izan dezaten. Legegileak ez du 1026/5024 Errege Dekretua aldarrikatu 2024ko urrira arte, enpresaburuek jakin dezaten nola ezarri behar den. Testuinguru horretan, enpresa-betebehar hori betetzeko kontuan hartu beharreko jarraibideak aurkezten dira.; The aim of this study is to analyse the measures in the field of employment set out in Law 4/2023, of 28 February, for the real and effective equality of trans people and for the guarantee of the rights of LGTBI people, focusing basically on Article 15 ‘Equality and non-discrimination LGTBI in companies. Due to the importance of this precept, Royal Decree 1026/2024, of 8 October, has recently been enacted, which develops the planned set of measures for equality and non-discrimination of LGTBI people in companies. In this context, the guidelines to be considered in order to be able to comply with this corporate duty are presented

Undersampling based IQ demodulator for particle accelerator cavities: design, implementation and characterization

    No full text
This work details the development and validation of a high-precision, cost-effective undersampling-based IQ demodulation system for high-frequency RF signals, designed for particle accelerator cavity control. Theoretical modeling of Track-and-Hold Amplifiers (THAs) revealed that clock phase noise significantly impacts measurement accuracy, with an order of magnitude increase in jitter or signal frequency leading to a two-order-of-magnitude rise in output noise. An analytical study also informed compensation strategies for ”quadrature oscillations” arising from small deviations between the modulation and demodulation frequencies (further confirmed in simulations and experimentally). A prototype, built on the NI FlexRIO PXIe platform with a 14-bit, 250 MS/s ADC, incorporates an FPGA-based Tayloe detector featuring a pipelined CORDIC algorithm and real-time THA non-linearity correction. Experimental validation confirmed accurate demodulation and oscillation mitigation across several Nyquist Zones. Its successful application to a magnetron signal demonstrated robust capture of complex amplitude and phase dynamics, highlighting its potential for Low-Level RF control in accelerator
