Cinquant’anni dopo: il sistema monetario di Bretton Woods in prospettiva storica
No full textThis contribution tackles the international monetary system established at the Bretton Woods Conference against the backdrop of the relationship among globalization, economic growth and international monetary relations from WWI to the 2008 Great Contraction. The first section reviews the relationship between the integration of national markets in the international economic system and their domestic growth from the nineteenth century classical gold standard to the 1980s. It emphasizes the pivotal importance of exchange rates among the currencies united in an international monetary system to account for their economies’ rates of domestic growth. The second part pinpoints the role of both the U.S. Federal Reserve System, and the international financial markets, in stabilizing the international economic system. Thereafter the article stresses the role of the U.S. dollar both under the fixed-exchange rate system, and since the mid-1970s under the new fiduciary dollar standard regime: the financial innovation that erupted in the 1980s favored this renewed centrality of the dollar

5. The Moral Economy of Consensus and Informality in Uzbekistan
No full textThis chapter looks at the transformation of Uzbek society by investigating the changing nature of authoritarianism from a moral economy perspective. The focus of analysis is on the relationship between informal economy and authoritarianism in Uzbekistan. It addresses how the workings of the informal economy shape the political sensibilities of the Uzbek new middle classes. The chapter takes inspiration from Chris Hann’s (2018) approach to the moral economy, in which the study of the transformation of social values across history figures prominently, but it also puts the Uzbekistan case in explicit comparison with his Hungarian case study. In both settings, significant connections subsist between illiberal politics, economy and populism/nationalism. Chris Hann’s work helps us understanding how, in both contexts, populist and nationalist elites rely on (and seek to manipulate) historically shaped values that resonate with people’s lived experiences and moral horizons

No full textNell’attuale società, che in passato ha visto l’orrore delle dittature e dei lager nazisti e comunisti, e che oggi sembra subire l’egemonia di un’economia di mercato che si pone contro le sovranità nazionali – nonché contro i diritti sociali e in generale le democrazie come si vede in alcuni paesi –, il drammaturgo romeno Matei Vişniec intravede ancora l’assurdità
della condizione umana, proseguendo il percorso di Kafka, Sartre, Camus e altri che avevano scorto nelle realtà del dopoguerra la stessa incoerenza della vita. Per lo scrittore romeno la società del nuovo millennio non è ancora in grado di far fronte alle trappole tese da nuove forme di autoritarismo. Quale corrente poteva dunque meglio descrivere il caos vissuto negli ultimi anni se non quella del Dadaismo, una corrente di
negazione e nonsense come annunciato nel Manifesto del 1918
(«Dada non significa nulla»)? Nasce così Il Cabaret Dada, una pièce teatrale che, come si legge già nel sottotitolo, è «alla rinfusa e in continua lavorazione», proprio come il susseguirsi imprevedibile degli eventi attuali cui fa allusivamente riferimento l’autore, in un continuo rimando a scene disastrose che evocano la tragedia della prima guerra mondiale

No full textLuce Irigaray has always had a tumultuous but lasting relationship with Hegel's philosophy, proof of which is present throughout her work, from Speculum of The Other Woman (1974) to her most recent To be Born (2017).
As we will show in this article, the object of the Belgian philosopher's criticism is the Hegelian dialectic: Irigaray reads this process as a form of violent reductionism, as the appropriation of the Other. In the Hegelian discourse the Woman - as in the case of Antigone - has been placed on the margins of politics, thought and community. But perhaps it is precisely for this reason - as we shall try to demonstrate - that she represents and reveals the persistence, beyond any possible edict and beyond any possibility of punishment, of this chaotic element, of a permanent and irrepressible conflict
