This book presents a study of Bithynia from the Archaic to the Hellenistic period. It is organized in two parts, divided chronologically by the expedition of Alexander the Great to Asia and the subsequent foundation of the Hellenistic kingdom of Bithynia. The first part deals with the main problems relating to the Greek foundations in this geographical area (Astakos, Kalchedon, Kios, Myrleia and Olbia) and the regional influence of the great powers (Athens, Sparta, Persia) in the late Archaic and Classical period. Ample space is given to the non-Greek presence in the area, examining the issues relating to the satrapy of Phrygia. In the second part, the focus is on the Hellenistic kingdom of Bithynia, whose formation profoundly modifies the political and social balances present in the area in the previous period. Finally, an appendix is dedicated to a short exposition concerning the monetary issues of the kings of Bithynia
Crafting Purity in Assyro-Babylonian Procedures
Assyro-Babylonian procedural texts for
making cult objects dated to the 1st millen- nium BCE provide an untapped resource for examining scribal conceptions of craft and purity in the ancient world. Ritual pro- cedures for “opening of the mouth” of a cult statue (mīs pî), and for manufacturing a ritual drum called the lilissu, constitute the principal focus of this two-part study. This work uses three themata – time, space, and the material world – to provide the scaffold- ing for a comparative analysis that spans various centuries and localities, highlight- ing the ways in which “purity” was crafted in cuneiform scholarly cultures
Die Konjunktur der Komödie im China der Gegenwart. Stücke und Zugänge
This book intends to be an approach to comedies in Chinese theatre and to the comical in China more broadly. Despite being an important aspect of contemporary Chinese culture, this field remains largely unexplored in research. At the core of this book are six dramas in commented translation, all of them are preceded by introductions written by leading scholars from the fields of Chinese and Theatre studies. A chapter on the comedy in Chinese theatre culture further proposes a historical perspective.

This paper investigates Ḫayrī Šalabī’s novel, Riḥlāt al-Ṭuršaǧī al-Ḥalwaǧī, where the protagonist makes a journey into the past. During this fantastic journey he is witness to some of the important events of the past and he knows a lot of Egyptian historical personalities. Through this novel, Šalabī tries to understand the profound meaning of History, in
search of which normally official historical sources are silent about. He puts himself on the side of those men and women who belong to the sub ordinate classes (the ʿāmmah) and who have been only exploited by the élites and have, in general, been victims of History
My contribution explores the meanings and literary influences behind the “fallen leaves” motif and the “old man” pose in the writings of Nagai Kafū (1879-1959). Starting from two short essays published in the first half of the 1940s, I will analyze a number of fiction and non-fiction works written from 1908 through 1937 in order to demonstrate that the theme of ageing has much deeper connotations than one could expect, and that the author resorted to it with a view to criticizing Japan’s path modern society
