    Renewable Energy Communities – Development of a simulation tool aimed at energy and profitability analyses

    Renewable Energy Communities (RECs) are emerging as a key field of research to further increase the share of renewable-energy-based systems in energy production. Research on RECs may take advantage of knowledge and tools from various disciplines such as Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) in buildings, urban energy consumption profiles, renewable energy sources, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), load balancing strategies, profitability analyses, electric system management, etc. This paper deals with the development of a software tool aimed at the evaluation of the balance and profitability of RECs. It is based on building energy simulation software EnergyPlus and calculates the outputs relevant for RECs. It enables researchers to perform energy and profitability analysis at various detail levels, starting from a volume-based approach up to the detailed definition of single apartments or buildings. For buildings lacking detailed information, it makes available data collected from acknowledged resources to determine building envelope characteristics and energy consumption profiles depending on construction/renovation year, building’s intended use and other general information

    Tuning Port Systems and Local Contexts. Socio-Spatial Interaction of Small Ports and Cities by Terms

    Ports, irrespective of size, play a critical role in regional economic development by enabling resource accessibility, transportation, and energy services, and act as crucial nodes of land-sea interaction. However, their socio-economic and environmental impact necessitates balancing economic development and legal framework with comprehensive sustainability and territorial adaptation. Under the impetus of regionalisation and port cluster dynamics, increasingly institutional strategies are geared toward the creation of port systems. While large ports have been extensively studied, Small and Medium-Sized Ports and recreational harbours remain underexplored despite their significance to local economies and the Blue Economy, as well as the understanding of ports as ecosystems and social constructs shaped by long-term institutional relationship and influenced by local cultures. Using socio-spatial analysis and case studies from the Apulian coast in southern Italy, the study examines how port system strategies interact with urban areas, starting from the terminologies for describing spatial scopes and typological classification. The insights highlight the importance of shared meanings and common visions underlying the definitions, for the implementation of strategies that align the action of the institutions involved. The need for collaborative processes that address the challenges of port city ecosystems planning and management by integrating the overall objectives of which ports are part of with their urban and socio-cultural specificities is also emphasised. The study contributes to a broader understanding of small port contexts, and addresses the need for a multi-actor and inclusive governance integrating diverse institutional perspectives

    Innovation and Resilience Through Bio-artifacts and Circular Design

    Research exchange and doctoral training by CTRL+JUNK LAB at Università Iuav di Venezia and the Territorial Design group at Leibniz University Hannover. Bridging the fields of design, architecture, and territorial planning, the Laboratory of Survival project explores how creative approaches can regenerate environments, communities, and economies through bio-artefacts and circular design. Developed in collaboration with Università Iuav di Venezia and Leibniz University Hannover, the project captures the dialogue between urban transformation and working with nature, and between research and practice. From Hyperlocal Design and regenerative visions of Venice to collective eco-innovation and circular tools for architecture, the essays and research projects reveal a landscape of emerging ideas, charting a path from material design to territorial resilience, where each project’s act becomes part of a laboratory for survival. At once visionary and grounded, this volume shows that the future of circularity lies not only in recycling materials, but in reimagining relationships between people, places, and the planet

    L’economia circolare e l’ecologia industriale offrono un paradigma integrato per superare il modello lineare di produzione e consumo, promuovendo il mantenimento del valore di materiali ed energia nel tempo. L’economia circolare fornisce il principio normativo della rigenerazione attraverso ecodesign, riuso, riparazione e riciclo, mentre l’ecologia industriale ne supporta l’attuazione analizzando i sistemi produttivi come metabolismi complessi e favorendo la simbiosi tra imprese. Il contributo richiama le radici teoriche del paradigma e ne chiarisce i limiti fisici alla luce della termodinamica, interpretando la circolarità come strategia di riduzione del throughput piuttosto che come chiusura perfetta dei cicli. Vengono infine discusse le implicazioni operative e strategiche, con riferimento al ruolo del design, ai modelli di business circolari e al potenziale della circolarità nel ridurre gli impatti ambientali e rafforzare competitività e resilienza delle imprese

    Giorgio Casali e la fotografia per il design

    Giorgio Casali (1913-1995) è una figura centrale nella storia della fotografia del Novecento. Dal 1951 a metà degli anni ottanta, per oltre trent’anni, egli è il fotografo dei maggiori architetti e designer italiani. La sua prolungata collaborazione con la rivista internazionale “Domus” lo mette in luce quale testimone negli anni in cui l’Italia viene attraversata dall’onda della modernizzazione, periodo caratterizzato da un forte entusiasmo per i nuovi stili di vita, per il nascente mercato dei consumi di massa, per le trasformazioni architettoniche pubbliche e private che plasmano nuovi contesti. Il sottotitolo della mostra, Paesaggi pubblici e privati, fa riferimento alla costruzione della nuova società, urbana e sociale, che si esprime nell’immaginario domestico, rappresentativo, produttivo e umano interpretato dalla fotografia. I materiali del Fondo Giorgio Casali, conservati presso l’Archivio Progetti dell’Università Iuav di Venezia (centoventimila fra lastre e negativi, oltre a una corposa documentazione dell’attività dello studio con le carte personali), consentono di raccontare, secondo diversi tagli tematici, le trasformazioni dell’Italia nella fase del più intenso sviluppo. Le sue fotografie rappresentano quindi un corpus documentale di grande interesse per raccontare uno dei contesti più produttivi del paese in una fase di sperimentazione e cambiamento

    Assessing heat stress risk to inform urban heat adaptation. A method applied in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, Italy

    Urban areas usually experience higher temperatures than their surroundings, especially due to impervious surfaces that absorb and re-emit solar radiation. This phenomenon is called urban heat island and occurs mainly at night. People living in urban settings are therefore particularly exposed to potential heat-related health problems caused during the hot season due to prolonged thermal discomfort conditions. This situation is likely to worsen in the future due to climate change, possibly resulting in increased health costs and socio-ecological inequalities. The socio-demographic structure of the population is key in determining the vulnerability of the population to heat stress conditions, with the weakest and most socially and economically disadvantaged being the most vulnerable. To support more targeted adaptation interventions to improve urban resilience and reduce people’s heat-related risks, this study develops a heat stress index that combines hazard, exposure, and vulnerability factors. The index is applied to the urban areas of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region (Italy), making it possible to identify risk hotspots that may be prioritized for reducing risk. The factors that contribute to determining the final risk condition are analyzed and discussed, together with the possible uses of the approach to support climate adaptation planning decisions at different scales and the risk mitigation solutions that may be implemented to this ai
