    Design e patrimoni marginali o emarginati. Design per la salvaguardia e la valorizzazione fisico-digitale

    Il contributo propone riflessioni su metodologie e pratiche del design per la valorizzazione di patrimoni culturali materiali e immateriali attraverso una selezione di progetti sviluppati dall’area design dell’Università Iuav di Venezia. Le esperienze presentate si inseriscono in contesti territoriali marginali e si caratterizzano per l’attivazione di pratiche collaborative, interdisciplinari e site-specific, avviate grazie a convenzioni di ricerca con enti pubblici e privati. L’osservazione profonda delle comunità locali coinvolte e la raccolta di fonti primarie e secondarie costituiscono il punto di partenza per formulare una rinnovata classificazione dei patrimoni materiali e immateriali rispetto all’usuale interpretazione che li rende marginali e/o emarginati. A partire dalla mappatura delle condizioni specifiche i progetti attivano processi e strategie di valorizzazione nei quali il design assume ruoli differenti attuando pratiche collaborative. I progetti non si esauriscono nella soluzione di specifiche problematiche, ma tendono alla valorizzazione culturale e sociale dei patrimoni e delle comunità. Il design opera come mediatore culturale, attivando strumenti e dispositivi fisici e digitali – archivi interattivi, mostre, eventi partecipativi – volti all’attivazione di dinamiche di rigenerazione della relazione tra patrimonio e le comunità di riferimento. I progetti indagano modelli di trasmissione culturale, accessibilità e sostenibilità per il futuro delle memorie collettive

    Studenti del Corso di Laurea in Urbanistica, immersi nello sviluppo della ricerca per la tesi di laurea dedicata allo studio delle forme e dei processi di trasformazione del territorio veneto, alla fine degli anni Ottanta del Novecento siamo stati invitati da Francesco Indovina a far parte del gruppo di ricerca che attraverso le proprie indagini e riflessioni avrebbe portato alla pubblicazione del libro La città diffusa. Il confronto molto vivace, talvolta aspro, in particolare tra Francesco Indovina, Michele Sernini, Marco Torres e Luciano Vettoretto, circa i modi e gli strumenti attraverso i quali comprendere quanto stava avvenendo sul territorio, era per noi studenti, alle prese con la possibilità di mettere in pratica quanto appreso nei corsi universitari, una condizione di assoluto privilegio. Il confronto e talvolta lo scontro su cosa e come guardare, indagare e analizzare, trasformava queste occasioni in un banco di prova dei diversi atteggiamenti e posture di ricerca. Il gruppo si interrogava sulla forma assunta dall’organizzazione del territorio nel Veneto centrale e ipotizzava che “tale forma, non morfologica, ma di organizzazione spaziale” potesse essere interpretata secondo il concetto di città diffusa

    Experimental Characterization and Numerical Validation of NFRCM for Strengthening Masonry

    The study investigates the performance of scaled-down masonry panels (0.5 m x 0.5 m) subjected to Diagonal Compression Tests (DCT), to evaluate the effect of Natural Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Matrix (NFRCM) on the deformation capacity and shear response of masonry. Two specimen typologies were tested: one un-strengthened, as the control case, and the other strengthened with NFRCM using jute mesh fabric. The tests were equipped with an adapted Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique to systematically capture the deformations during the DCT. The experimental outcome demonstrated an improvement in the deformation capacity of the strengthened panel when compared to the un-strengthened one, indicating the potential of NFRCM in enhancing the mechanical performance of masonry structures. To further validate the findings, Finite Element (FE) models were developed for both the panel typologies. In the case of the strengthened specimen, a multi-leaf homogenization method accounting for the NFRCM mesh fabric direction, was employed to simulate its shear behaviour and evaluate the contribution in improving the shear performance of the specimens

    Transboundary Management of a Common Sea in the Gulf of Venice: Opportunities from Maritime Spatial Planning in Italy and Slovenia

    Italy and Slovenia have recently adopted their first Maritime Spatial Plans (MSP). These plans belong to a new generation of spatial planning acts that introduce numerous innovations. This article presents the differences and similarities between the Italian and Slovenian MSP. The aim is to determine how a new planning approach can support joint spatial development and management in a transboundary perspective with particular reference to the cross-border area of the Gulf of Venice. Descriptive and comparative scientific methods were applied in the study. We analysed the structure of both plans and the content of the individual planning instruments and tools for three key sectors: Fisheries, Maritime Transport and Nature Conservation. We found that both plans offer new opportunities for transboundary spatial coordination and planning, while the process of preparing the plans themselves is particularly important. Both plans provide instruments to address transboundary environmental impacts, spatial development and sectoral management regimes. The implementation tools include provisions on the spatial, temporal and technical conditions for carrying out a particular activity at sea. The Italian plan adopts a strategic approach that offers possibilities for intersectoral and cross-border planning coordination. The Slovenian plan is more detailed and binding. Regardless of individual differences, the adoption of both plans represents a major step towards achieving the common goals of sustainable spatial development in the shared marine area of the Gulf of Venice

    This study investigates intertemporal preferences by estimating individual discount rates in both monetary and environmental contexts. Using survey-based experiments and stated preference methods on a representative sample of the Italian population, it examines how individuals trade off present and future benefits and how discounting behavior varies across contexts and socio-demographic groups. The results show higher discount rates for monetary outcomes than for environmental goods, suggesting that individuals place relatively greater value on future environmental benefits. These findings highlight the context sensitivity of time preferences and have important implications for cost-benefit analysis and long-term policy design, particularly in environmental and public investment settings

    Towards Sustainable Seas: ReMAP's Contribution to Monitoring and Evaluating Maritime Spatial Plans

    In compliance with the EU Directive 2014/89/EU on maritime spatial planning (MSP), the first generation of plans has now been approved and is under implementation. Subsequently, there is a growing necessity to monitor and evaluate how effectively these plans fulfil societal needs and promote the economic development of maritime and coastal sectors, while ensuring environmental sustainability and minimising marine ecosystem degradation. The ReMAP project (Reviewing and Evaluating the Monitoring and Assessment of Maritime Spatial Planning) is dedicated to addressing this challenge. The project focuses on developing comprehensive frameworks for monitoring, reviewing, and evaluating MSP to ensure the plans align with long-term objectives and deliver tangible benefits for marine and coastal environments. ReMAP builds on the advancements made by the Technical Expert Group on data for MSP, which established an EU data standard for sharing maritime spatial plans in 2021. The harmonised MSP plans hosted on the European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet) provide the opportunity to leverage interoperability within an innovative and modular analytical approach to assess MSP performance. ReMAP employs a suite of 10+1 simple, open-access and reusable analytical modules that collectively deliver a comprehensive evaluation of the current status and effectiveness of maritime spatial planning. These tools are designed for flexible use across various MSP phases, including initial development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation towards the improvement of the MSP plans. The ReMAP project has focused on three specific use cases to test the developed tools. These are the entire Baltic Sea basin, a cross-border use case in the West Mediterranean, and a local testing area on the Galician coast in Spain. ReMAP tools are aimed at the development of a range of comprehensive analyses, which include cumulative impact assessments evaluating how various maritime activities collectively impact marine environment; socio-economic analyses that examine the economic effects of maritime sectors; and governance reviews to evaluate the effectiveness and structure of MSP governance. ReMAP also addresses land-sea interaction analyses, studies on the compatibility of marine conservation efforts, and navigation safety assessments. Additionally, the framework evaluates ecosystem services, aligns with EU environmental legislation objectives, and utilises input/output data analytics to manage and evaluate spatial information effectively. The performance of these 10+1 tools is being refined within Alpha (January 2024) and Beta (March 2025) tests developed with the collaboration of stakeholders, framework potential users in each of the use case areas. The Modular Analytics Framework will be released in October 2025. It is designed to identify specific areas of maritime plans that may require updates or modifications to better address societal needs, support blue growth, and ensure environmental sustainability. ReMAP is developing a comprehensive MSP monitoring and evaluation framework to detect issues that should be considered both during the implementation phase and in the next iteration of planning. ReMAP’s innovative approach to MSP evaluation offers a pathway towards achieving a healthier and more resilient ocean, to advance scientific understanding and promote effective solutions for ocean conservation and sustainable development

    Cultures of glass. Heritage-based innovation and sustainability in education

    This paper presents the GLASS Cluster as a case study in sustainability education, where heritage and innovation meet. It illustrates how glass cultures can support the training of architects and designers through collaborative and antifragile learning. The study draws on ESF+ projects, Erasmus+ BIP, GlassLAB workshops, and design hackathons developed with enterprises, as well as on the analysis of publications, exhibitions, and governance frameworks such as the Committee for Glass Scholarships. The findings highlight capacity building for young researchers, the transfer of artisanal and industrial knowledge through digital tools, and a replicable pedagogy that links local heritage with global sustainability goals
