    No full text
The theme of distance represents a central problem in the scientific biography of the architectural historian Manfredo Tafuri (1935-1994). This paper aims to investigate Tafuri's working method starting from the sources used and the teaching material prepared for the academic course about the History of Antiurban Ideology, held by him at the IUAV in the 1972-73, in which Venice appears for the first time in a historical perspective: as the link in a chain that, through contradictory paths, can also help to understand the current condition

    No full text

A Proactive GIS Geo-Database for Castles Damaged by the 2012 Emilia Earthquake

    Get PDF
The 2012 Emilia earthquake highlighted the vulnerability of fortified architecture. Based on the observed seismic behaviors, this research proposes a GIS geodatabase, designed with a proactive approach, for the prediction and prevention—at a territorial scale—of the most frequent damage mechanisms of the investigated typology. The designed geo-database allows for the identification of possible correlations between constructive features and the occurrence of damage, through statistical and geo-referenced analysis. Moreover, the designed geodatabase, by enabling the comparison of the damage level data with the seismic action of the site, through INGV (National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology) shakemaps, allowed the definition of experimental fragility curves, for three of the most common damage mechanisms. By applying these functions to castles in the province of Parma, it was possible to define future seismic risk scenarios for the mechanisms considered, thanks to the use of the seismic hazard map. Therefore, the described methodology could be functional to identify the most urgent and high-priority interventions in order to optimize the management of economic resources. The final aim is to promote the application of the concept of minimum intervention, and more in general to preserve the architectural heritage, avoiding emergency interventions and aiming instead to apply planned conservation strategies

    No full text
In a world of constant transformations, where urban geographies adopt new morphologies, urban areas, buildings, and open spaces go through cycles of high and low utilization, within which moments of transition, uncertainty, and immobility emerge. Factors such as natural disasters, economic shifts, or political changes can bring the built environment into a state of uncertainty—caught between an old and a potential new destiny. This phenomenon has led various actors to rethink—and often reactivate—these types of spaces at multiple scales, resulting in transformations within the already-built city through processes of reconstruction upon itself as a generic principle. These processes are articulated through various practices formed around the prefix re—which, from multiple entry points—seek to build the city from the tabula plena rather than the tabula rasa, projecting the future through the reuse of previous traces, reactivating and initiating new cycles within the palimpsest. In this broader context, the doctoral research The Changing Tabula Plena: Chile’s Central Valley through Talca and Its Many Small Significant Changes explores how this phenomenon—predominant in cities of the Global North, where further expansion is often no longer possible—manifests in Chile’s Central Valley. A geographic region that, due to recurrent earthquakes, generates, accelerates, and fosters the conditions for the constant transformation of its consolidated urban fabric, positioning it as a particularly fertile ground, on a global scale, for studying this phenomenon. All of this occurs within a context where expansion and transformation of the already-built city happen simultaneously. The research is based on the heuristic hypothesis that many small significant changes, occurring within the tabula plena, are collectively and radically transforming the cities of Chile’s Central Valley. To examine this, the case of Talca between 2008 and 2024 is analyzed, investigating how numerous urban planning concepts prefixed by re- have empirically modified the city. This leads to key research questions: How are the transformations of the tabula plena manifesting in the cities of Chile’s Central Valley? What do these changes reveal about urban dynamics within the already-built city? And is a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon necessary? The findings are presented in a thesis structured in four chapters which, after laying out the transformations, delve into the need to establish a denomination capable of offering an integrated conceptual framework of the phenomenon—one that can initiate effective tools to help various actors engage in dialogue toward building an urban project—explicit or implicit—that resonates with the possibility of conceiving the city, the urban space, and its components as renewable resources

    Ignazio Gardella : persistenza dell'architettura

Architecture, new technology, and politics in the Italian Sixties

    No full text
The Sixties were a period of epochal transformations for Italy’s economy, culture, political landscape, arts, and territory, and constituted the terrain for significant reflections on the role of technology in society. In the Italian Sixties, the arrival of a new technology, the computer, was accompanied by great aspirations also as far as its adoption in architectural design and in the production of the built environment was concerned. From the enthusiastic years which followed the launch of Olivetti’s ELEA 9003 mainframe and Turin’s 1961 Expo, at the zenith of the country’s postwar economic miracle, unprecedented industrialisation and technological euphoria, to the period of hard political contestation, academic reform and counterculture which had crucial moments in the students’ and workers’ protests of 1967-1969, many prominent figures of the Italian architectural scene wrote intensely about the computer, and in some cases even adopted it in experimental computer aided design processes. To this date, an extensive historical study of this relationship, which had internationally relevant protagonists such as Luigi Moretti, Giancarlo De Carlo, and Manfredo Tafuri, and lesser-known ones – albeit of great interest – such as Leonardo Mosso, Laura Castagno and Maurizio Sacripanti, has not been carried out. As a sort of map, this thesis identifies some of the main fields where the computer and a computer culture were envisioned as instruments which could bring about a renewal of design disciplines: the world of operations research and “scientific” design methodologies in architecture; the world of building industrialisation; and the multifaceted world of what would be known as “programmed” architecture. Each of these worlds had its climaxes, crises, and protagonists, often with different or even conflictual gazes on the matter. The expectations towards the computer expressed within these fields were tightly interwoven with the broader, burning themes which, each one with its rhythm and historical milestones throughout the decade, characterised the political and theoretical debates of the Italian Sixties. In particular, themes which will emerge in the thesis and which will constitute the context of chosen architectural cases studies are those of the complex notion of democracy in a society which had been through the fascist regime, after the new democratic constitution; the question concerning intellectual labour within the neo-capitalistic system of production, which also concerned the notion of participation; and, deeply connected with all the former, the question concerning the machine and the possibility of its critical and politically engaged use. Fed by a network of international exchanges, such intertwinings of architecture, pioneering explorations of computers and political questions were deeply imbedded in the Italian context of that period; however, in a different context with inevitably different characteristics, the aspects of the relationship between technology, politics, and architecture they investigated are still urgent and problematic. The Sixties were a period of epochal transformations for Italy’s economy, culture, political landscape, arts, and territory, and constituted the terrain for significant reflections on the role of technology in society. L'EFFIMERO ARCHITETTONICO. Due allestimenti di Valeriano Pastor e Michelina Michelotto

    No full text
