    In dialogo con Luciano Vettoretto

    No full text

On the continuum limit of the Follow-the-Leader model and its stability

    Get PDF
We consider the Follow-the-Leader (FtL) model and study which properties of the initial positioning of the vehicles ensure its convergence to the classical Lighthill-Whitham-Richards (LWR) model for traffic flow. Robustness properties of both FtL and LWR models with respect to the initial discretization schemes are investigated. Some numerical simulations are also discussed

Influence of environmental attitudes and time horizons on the valuation of lagoon ecosystem services: A choice experiment approach using principal component analysis

Coastal lagoon habitats provide multiple ecosystem goods and services that contribute to people’s well-being. However, owing to degradation from both anthropogenic and natural causes, these areas require conservation and protection that involve considerable public investment. To help determine this investment, this study esti- mates the nonmarket economic value of habitat, regulation, and cultural ecosystem services (ESs) using people’s environmental attitudes and temporal preferences. Primary data were collected from 517 residents in the Veneto region through an online choice experiment survey. Respondents’ environmental attitudes and beliefs were collected using the revised New Ecological Paradigm scale and analyzed using principal component analysis. Mixed logit models were applied to evaluate the marginal willingness to pay under different scenarios. The implicit discount rate linked to the different ESs varied between 2% and 6%, showing ESs should be discounted with distinct rates. Total household indirect and nonuse values for ESs ranged from €93 to €118, according to the model used. The results suggest that people are willing to pay to improve the conservation of lagoon ESs and that the future environmental impacts are valued less than the immediate effects. Additionally, people with envi- ronmental attitudes are more likely to contribute to the protection of ESs, and unobservable factors such as motivations, attitudes, perceptions, and beliefs guide people’s valuations. These findings can be used to guide policymakers in designing sound conservation policies

Fungal Dye Alchemy for an Interspecies Reconciliation

    No full text
This article examines the role of fungal organisms in fashion design, particularly their influence on dye processes and their integration into an eco- technological paradigm. It situates the discussion within an on-going doctoral research that explores the interplay between fungi and contemporary fashion, affecting objects, production processes and design practices. In fact, despite the growing interest in fungi in academic and non-academic circles, studies conducted on their applications for fashion and textile are still scarce. The main aim of the arti- cle is to demonstrate how dye practices developed in synergy with fungal species, imbues these of an alchemical power that re-enchants the relationship between and the identity of the designer and the object. Such an approach to interspecies design leans on the posthuman philosophy, whereby the textile dye process allows rec- onciling the dichotomy between ecology and technology providing a hopefully fertile terrain to inspire the industry to engage with its scaling. According to a qualitative approach, the article develops through a two-case study interpretative comparison that adopts the methodology of participant ethnography

Overtourism and Hostile Architecture: Preliminary Assessments of the Effects in Major Italian Cities

    No full text
The term overtourism is used when the number of visitors in each location becomes disproportionate to the capacity of the site to sustainably manage tourist flows. According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), overtourism denotes the negative impact of tourism on a destination, affecting both the visitor experience and, more significantly, the quality of life of residents. To better assess the impact that overtourism has had on major Italian cities over the past decade, it is essential to understand the political strategies implemented by local administrations and the resulting urban and social transformations. City administrators in the most attractive tourist destinations have adopted solutions that encourage tourist consumption while contributing to the displacement of residents. Among these strategies, hostile architecture stands out as a measure designed to control and influence the behaviour, attitudes, and well-being of specific groups of people within public spaces. In this context, several aspects can be evaluated: the weakening of local public transportation (explicit hostile architecture), the removal or alteration of benches (implicit hostile architecture), the disappearance of public restrooms (denied architecture), and other similar interventions. After establishing the general framework of reference, this study presents an assessment based on direct survey techniques, aiming to preliminarily identify the impact of overtourism-induced discomfort on tourist decision-making. This type of consultation, targeting key industry stakeholders as well as directly affected individuals both tourists and residents focuses on hostile solutions to foster a deeper understanding of the ongoing transformations
