    No full text

Monsoon variability and high latitude climate signals in the Central Mediterranean at the Pliocene- Pleistocene transition: The Gelasian stratotype section (Monte San Nicola, Sicily) [Global and Planetary Change, volume 249, 104788]: Comment

The stratigraphic record of Monte San Nicola (southern Sicily, Italy), where the Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for the Gelasian Stage (Lower Pleistocene) has been defined, has been studied by our research group for fifteen years. In 2021, another working group (GELSTRAT) started investigating the Monte San Nicola stratigraphy in a location close to the GSSP section, with results that differ significantly from those published by our team. In particular, major discrepancies in the alkenone-derived paleotemperature reconstructions led the GELSTRAT team to suggest that our age model is invalid, and they inferred that we had made a wrong interpretation of the physical stratigraphic record. In this comment, we demonstrate that our chronological model is correct, while the stratigraphic profile studied by the GELSTRAT team should be approached with care, due to the presence of tectonic displacements, truncations, and uncertain lithological evidence for critical marker beds, such as the sapropel layers below the Nicola bed

The Fourth Arena. Rethinking Political Participation in the Digital Age

    Get PDF
The digital revolution and the rise of e-participation have led scholars to reconsider established definitions of political participation: their dimensions, modes, and arenas. Drawing on the theoretical framework proposed by Francesco Raniolo in his book 'La partecipazione politica. Fare, pensare, essere', this article examines the academic debate surrounding the various definitions of online participation and its intersections with long-standing disputes over the nature of political participation. Treating the media (and the Internet) as an arena for observing citizens' engagement and participatory acts enables to address the hybrid and expanding repertoire of what will be called Participation at Distance (PaD), which also sees the re-invention of traditional forms of participation. More than other arenas, the media arena constitutes a 'place' capable of hosting old and new, conventional and unconventional, institutional and non-institutional, instrumental and expressive, legal, a-legal, and illegal forms of political participation

Homocysteine, Nutrition, and Gut Microbiota: A Comprehensive Review of Current Evidence and Insights

    Get PDF
: Homocysteine, a sulfur-containing amino acid, is an intermediate product during the metabolism of methionine, a vital amino acid. An elevated concentration of homocysteine in the plasma, named hyperhomocysteinemia, has been significantly related to the onset of several diseases, including diabetes, multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis, cancer, and neurodegenerative disorders such as dementia, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. An interaction between metabolic pathways of homocysteine and gut microbiota has been reported, and specific microbial signatures have been found in individuals experiencing hyperhomocysteinemia. Furthermore, some evidence suggests that gut microbial modulation may exert an influence on homocysteine levels and related disease progression. Conventional approaches for managing hyperhomocysteinemia typically involve dietary interventions alongside the administration of supplements such as B vitamins and betaine. The present review aims to synthesize recent advancements in understanding interventions targeted at mitigating hyperhomocysteinemia, with a particular emphasis on the role of gut microbiota in these strategies. The emerging therapeutic potential of gut microbiota has been reported for several diseases. Indeed, a better understanding of the complex interaction between microbial species and homocysteine metabolism may help in finding novel therapeutic strategies to counteract hyperhomocysteinemia

    No full text
