The Perception of Corporate Social Responsibility among Millennials and Gen Z
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is increasingly recognized as an essential element in business strategies, particularly for engaging socially conscious consumers like Millennials and Generation Z, as there is an ever-growing demand from this generational cohort for transparency and ethical practices from organizations. The objective of this paper is to determine the perception of CSR among Millennials and Gen Z. To achieve this objective, the study employs a quantitative approach through the case study of the Rimini Social Club, a network of businesses and entities based in Rimini, Italy, utilizing a 5-point Likert scale quantitative survey. The survey both had a generic section on CSR with the aim of investigating the level of knowledge and importance that the sample attributes to socially responsible activities carried out by business companies and a specific section on the Rimini Social Club, which aimed to explore the knowledge, perception, and interest of respondents regarding the Rimini network. Key findings suggest that respondents support CSR practices and would be willing to pay a higher price for products from companies that support local culture and products, environmental protection, and the local community
The sustainable landfill: an integrated service for the environment
This paper aims to contribute to the debate on waste management with the intention of
considering the waste cycle as an integrated service using the logical scheme proper to
network analysis. Its optimization involves the identification of critical nodes and
bottlenecks that prevent the system from achieving balances in line with circularity and
sustainability. Providing for a sustainable landfill, as a necessary building block that cleanly
closes the material cycle, imposes the constraint that produces backward effects
throughout the supply chain, even to the point of changing the structure of the entire
network. A simple model shows that the lifespan of a landfill, in the absence of economic
constraints, depends on the actions put in place upstream of the final storage phase, which
will have to be all the more incisive the greater the community's aversion to the creation
of landfills
Unveiling the real-time behaviour of Staphylococcus aureus through nanomotion sensing
Iron is an essential micronutrient for bacterial growth and plays a crucial role in various physiological processes, including motility. This study investigates the influence of iron availability on the behaviour of Staphylococcus aureus, a significant human pathogen, using a nanomotion sensing technique. By correlating nanoscale vibrations with metabolically related behaviour, this sensor offers real-time insight into the activity of biological specimens from single proteins to living bacteria and mammalian cells. S. aureus cultures were grown under iron-repleted and iron-depleted conditions, and their nano-scale motility was monitored in real time. We compared the activity of wild type S. aureus with an isogenic deletion mutant, in which siderophore production was abrogated. Our results demonstrate distinct motility patterns of the two strains in response to varying iron concentrations, including different outlines of their activity. We identified the fingerprint of the iron intake pathway for the two strains: in the presence of iron, while the wild-type strain followed an exponential growth pattern, the mutant suspended its growth. Remarkably, in presence of iron, both strains showed some coordinated oscillations at well-defined frequencies, which could be related to specific behaviour of S. aureus. These results were corroborated by the phenotypic assays performed through optical microscopy and conventional growth methods. Such findings highlight the potential of nanomotion sensing, a powerful tool to study cellular vibrations and to investigate the complex relationship between iron homeostasis and S. aureus activity, suggesting this metabolic route as a possible fruitful target for the development of novel antibacterials
Nutritional habits, inhibitory control, and emotional reactivity to healthy and unhealthy food cues in non-obese female students: insights from heart rate variability
Background: Research shows that the nutritional habits of university students do not follow the national recommendations. While most studies have focused on the increased risk of overweight/obesity, avoiding unhealthy food or maintaining a normal weight does not necessarily result in a regular consumption of healthy essential nutrients. Methods: The present study was aimed at investigating the interplay between emotional reactivity and inhibitory control in 42 non-obese female students exposed to healthy (fish/lean meat, fruit/vegetables) and unhealthy (savory and sweet junk food) food pictures, after an average fasting of 7.5 h. Resting heart rate variability (HRV) was assessed as a physiological index of self-regulation, exploring its association with emotional reactivity and inhibitory control, as well as its predictive role in nutritional habits. We measured valence, arousal and craving during a free viewing time task and assessed inhibitory and attentional control through an emotional Go/NoGo task. Hunger, nutritional habits and frequency of physical activity were also collected. Results: Unhealthy foods elicited higher pleasantness, arousal and craving than healthy foods, indicating stronger appetitive motivation. Emotional reactivity was predicted by hunger or fasting duration as a function of food type. Higher HRV predicted slower reaction times to Go stimuli for all food types except fruit/vegetables. HRV and physical activity negatively predicted the habitual consumption of sweet junk food and positively predicted that of fruit/vegetables. Conclusion: Our results provide novel insights into the mechanisms underlying dietary self-regulation in non-obese female students, highlighting the significant role of resting HRV and physical activity in promoting healthy dietary choices and limiting junk food intake
Back to Functionalism? Capturing Language and Pathologising Dissent: from Environmental Movements to Protests against Pandemic Policies
This chapter examines how traditional left flagships - such as public health, trust in science and environmental sustainability - have undergone a semantic reversal as neoliberal capitalism has appropriated and repurposed them to legitimise its interests. A systematic reflection on the complex consequences of these semantic reversals in the public sphere and in changing contexts and opportunities for political participation is still lacking. We examine how these processes have intensified in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the ecological crisis, leading to the stigmatisation of protest movements and the shrinking of the space for political dissent. These semantic reversals, particularly evident in the case of COVID-related protests, allowed for a reproposition of interpretive schemes peculiar to the early days of structural-functionalist literature. This was also possible because these protests were framed as 'exceptional': it was precisely the persuasiveness of their discontinuity that justified the abandonment of interpretive tools accumulated over decades by different disciplines. By reading the covid phase not as an exception, but rather as an acceleration of pre-existing dynamics affecting political participation and representation, we recognise in the recovery of functionalist approaches an outcome of justification of existing power relations. By contrast, drawing on qualitative research, we argue for the need for different interpretive perspectives capable of unveiling the ongoing redefinition of the lines of political conflict and contextual processes of re-politicisation
