Geoarbitrage at the meso level: How intermediaries shape Chinese migration to Portugal

    No full text
This paper examines the practice of geoarbitrage, as carried out by middle-level private actors when engaging with Chinese migrants aspiring to access the Golden Visa programme in Portugal. Based on interviews with experts and Chinese migrants, content analysis of migration policies as well as of online promotional materials produced by migration consultants, we investigate the role of intermediaries in the (re)production of Portugal's desirability as a mobility destination for relatively wealthy Chinese migrants. While the concept of geoarbitrage has been mainly used regarding the micro-level of mobility decision-making, we hereby extend it to shed light on how intermediaries act as geoarbiters between legal frameworks and migrants' aspirations and resources. By examining the role of the meso-level actors involved in the geoarbitrage between Portugal and China, we aim to edify the enduring appeal of Portugal as a desirable destination for wealthy Asian migrants and to discuss key policy implications.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The implementation of the 15-minute city model in Barcelona and the decline of the city’s nightlife industry

    No full text
Through data extraction from different data sources, collation of urban public policies, auto-ethnography and exploratory netnography, this article reveals how the implementation of the 15-minute city model in Barcelona (Spain) – one of the flagship cities for the 15-minute city model in Europe – parallels the decline of the city’s nightlife industry over the past decade, despite the fact that access to culture and leisure is a fundamental pillar of the 15-minute city model. The article ends up by arguing that the implementation of the 15-minute city model in Barcelona could also be seen as enacting a cultural and moral agenda for the promotion of “good leisure”, and, by extension, the “good citizen” in the 15-minute city Barcelona.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

A new scale for evaluating disclosure in earnings calls on emerging markets

    No full text
Corporate disclosure via earnings calls is a vital mechanism for financial transparency and stakeholder communication, enabling investors to evaluate firms’ performance, governance practices, and strategic direction. Yet existing approaches to assessing disclosure quality are often outdated, fragmented, or narrowly focused on sustainability, thereby neglecting the governance dimension of transparency. This study develops and validates a comprehensive, reliable, and optimized scale to measure the quality of corporate disclosure in earnings calls, integrating both sustainability and governance perspectives. Using a systematic scale-development process grounded in a robust conceptual framework, we collected data from 74 investors and analysts across multiple stages, focusing on Brazilian listed companies. Exploratory factor analysis yielded a refined three-dimensional structure comprising Analyst Disclosure, ESG (environmental, social and governance), and Artificial Intelligence. Findings indicate that investors increasingly regard artificial intelligence as central to evaluating disclosure credibility and informing investment decisions. This research advances disclosure measurement by offering a novel, empirically validated instrument that captures evolving communication dynamics. The proposed scale provides theoretical and practical contributions by strengthening the links between governance, sustainability, and financial transparency, and it establishes a foundation for future cross-market validation in emerging economies.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    No full text
This article presents a technical and scientific analysis of the Global Teacher Prize Portugal (GTPP), an award created to recognize and value teachers who have distinguished themselves through their educational practices. Based on a theoretical framework of planning, evaluation, and diagnosis, the relevance of this initiative is analyzed as a response to the social, emotional, and institutional challenges faced by teachers in Portugal. Key issues highlighted include the social devaluation of the profession, functional overload, lack of recognition, and the fragmentation of teachers’ work, which consequently lead to professional burnout and identity crises. The study explores solutions centered on teachers’ creativity, innovation, and reflexivity, emphasizing the GTPP as a means to strengthen self-esteem, motivation, and retention in the profession, fostering new pedagogical practices and a more humanistic and inclusive environment. In conclusion, it is understood that initiatives like the GTPP contribute to rethinking educational policies, promoting an ethical and democratic approach to teaching, while also recognizing the relevance of teachers as transformative agents of society.aceit

Policy innovation in Barcelona and Utrecht: The role of advocacy coalitions in multilevel contexts

    No full text
This article explores how policy innovation in local social policies emerges within a multilevel governance context. Drawing on the Advocacy Coalition Framework (ACF), it examines how beliefs, coalitions, and institutional arrangements interact across different political arenas—European, national/regional, and local—to foster innovative social policy solutions. Empirically, the study compares two cases of policy innovation (inspired by basic income principles)—Barcelona and Utrecht. Methodologically, the analysis relies on 19 semi-structured interviews with key actors involved in the policy process, complemented by documentary analysis. Findings show that policy innovation results from the interplay between local agency and multilevel structural opportunities. The ACF proves to be a valuable theoretical lens for explaining how ideas and coalitions gain traction across governance levels. Moreover, it concludes that local innovation depends not only on the role of policy entrepreneurs but also on the enabling conditions created by multilevel governance structures.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

From industrial heartland to urban tourism destination: Balancing growth and community well-being in Amsterdam Noord

    No full text
This study explores the dynamics of urban tourism development in Amsterdam Noord, a district undergoing a significant transformation from an overlooked area to a vibrant hub, with particular attention to how sustainability concerns and community well-being are negotiated in this process. The study aims to develop an empirically grounded theoretical framework explaining the processes through which tourism development in Amsterdam Noord influences community dynamics and sustainability outcomes. Using a Grounded Theory methodology, including desk research, interviews, and observations, the research investigates the benefits and challenges posed by the increasing tourist influx, proposing a holistic model to urban development. The findings reveal that while tourism, as a part of a broader development strategy, has stimulated economic growth and urban regeneration, it has also exacerbated gentrification and social inequalities. The study emphasizes the need for balanced tourism policies that prioritize community well-being and sustainable development. The research highlights the complexity of managing urban tourism in a way that preserves the unique character of local neighbourhoods.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Children's friendship quality in early childhood education: The interplay with classroom quality, participation practices, and length of exposure to the ECE teacher

Friendships are crucial for children, and high-quality friendships encompass positive, supportive, and low-conflict interactions. Early childhood education (ECE) teachers spend considerable time with children and influence their relationships through high-quality teacher-child interactions and opportunities for child participation. This study examined the associations between observed classroom quality, observed participation practices, and children’s friendship quality, considering the moderating role of the length of exposure to the lead ECE teacher (i.e., months with the lead teacher). Participants in this study were 336 children (163 boys), aged 42 to 76 months (M = 60.14, SD = 7.86), from 58 ECE classrooms in the Lisbon area, Portugal, and their lead teachers. Findings suggest (i) a positive relationship between instructional support and closeness in children's friendships, when children spent more months with the lead teacher; (ii) a negative relationship between emotional support and conflict in children's friendships, when children spent more months with the lead teacher; (iii) a positive relationship between classroom organization and conflict in children’s friendships, when children spent fewer months with the lead teacher; and (iv) a negative relationship between conditions for participation and conflict in children's friendships, when children spent more time with the lead teacher. These findings have implications for practice and policymaking, emphasizing the relevance of sustained high-quality teacher-child interactions and participation practices to enhance children’s friendship quality in ECE.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Prioritising communities: Barriers to climate activism and political imagination among minoritised youth groups

Minoritised youth voices are often underrepresented in climate action research. Despite the increasing interest in youth climate activism, there is still an overall lack of attention to the perspectives of young people struggling with discrimination, poverty, and other social injustices. In this article, we focus on a diverse group of minoritised youth in Portugal to explore their experiences of climate activism, perceived agency, and political imaginaries of the future. We conducted a qualitative study involving seven focus groups with 55 participants, including young people with a migrant background and/or living in underserved communities in Portugal. Based on a Reflexive Thematic Analysis, we generated three main themes that illustrate participants’ ways of engaging with climate change issues, the barriers that constrain their engagement with climate activism and the challenges in the political imagination of the future. Our findings suggest that minoritised youth would like to have a voice in political debates about climate change and that more inclusive dialogues about climate futures could help bridge existing territorial and social divides.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The pandemic as a ‘revelatory crisis’: The experiences of international students during emergency remote teaching in a postcolonial context

    No full text
This paper critically examines the experiences of international students during the abrupt transition to emergency remote teaching in Portuguese higher education institutions amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on 42 in-depth interviews, four focus group discussions with international students from China, Brazil, Syria, and Portuguese-speaking African countries, and 15 interviews with institutional staff, the study explores the pedagogical and structural challenges faced during this crisis. Framed within critical pedagogical theories, particularly Paulo Freire’s and bell hooks’ concepts of engaged and care-informed pedagogy, the analysis reveals how emergency remote teaching exacerbated pre-existing inequities and deficit narratives surrounding international students. Findings highlight the persistence of transmissive teaching models, limited institutional preparedness, and discriminatory assumptions based on nationality, which collectively undermined inclusive learning environments. The pandemic is interpreted as a ‘revelatory crisis’ that exposed systemic failures in international student support and pedagogical adaptation. The study argues for a transformative shift towards ethically engaging pedagogies that recognise international students as equal co-contributors to the academic community. Recommendations are offered to reform institutional practices and teaching strategies in the post-pandemic landscape, emphasising the need for inclusive, dialogic, and diversity-sensitive approaches.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The Eco Showboat and the river communities of Limerick: When art and science weave new territories

    No full text
The Eco Showboat project, led by artists Anne Cleary and Denis Connolly in 2022 and 2023, in collaboration with scientists, local artists, and communities, promoted activist artistic actions advocating for an ecological approach to urban and non-urban territories traversed by Ireland’s waterways. By navigating rivers, lakes, and canals and engaging with diverse territories, the solar-powered boat Mayfly connected actions carried out along the water, and aimed to weave links between aquatic environments, the territories concerned, and the practices and visions of local populations. This article focuses on the Limerick stage of the journey and its broader territory, where relationships between river communities and the river itself emerged through meaningful engagement—not only in collaborative artistic processes but also in ecological awareness initiatives. These efforts highlighted the role of local inhabitants in the sustainable management of rivers and in their enhanced integration into the urban fabric. The actions carried out by Eco Showboat illustrate how artistic activism, supported by science, strengthens the connections between the river, the city, and its inhabitants. It consolidates the emotional bond with the fluvial environment while also raising awareness of environmental issues and encouraging more responsible practices. These initiatives also contribute to the regeneration of rivers, foster interaction between the river and the city, and support a broader vision of the city as an integral part of a larger territorial ecosystem.publicad
