Socio-cognitive mindfulness is a well-being booster: A serial mediation model to test the mindfulness reappraisal hypothesis with managers

    Get PDF
Purpose The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between mindfulness and two types of well-being, namely subjective and psychological well-being, particularly in a managerial context. The mindfulness-to-meaning theory (MMT) suggests that the practice of mindfulness might lead individuals to reevaluate and find greater meaning in their experiences, ultimately contributing to increased well-being. Accordingly, we argue that mindfulness boosts well-being because it may potentially lead managers to reappraise what surrounds them, making them experience more frequent positive affect. Design/methodology/approach A two-wave survey with a two-week interval was used to gather quantitative data. An overall sample of 1,260 managers with and without experience with mindfulness took part in the study. Findings Structural equation modeling showed that mindfulness had a direct and positive relationship with both subjective and psychological well-being. Furthermore, both processes – positive reappraisal and positive affect – mediated the path from mindfulness to both forms of well-being. Practical implications The findings emphasize the importance of creating training strategies that develop managers’ ability to positively reappraise daily events and occurrences, which may trigger more frequently positive affective experiences. Therefore, promoting mindfulness training at the workplace may develop mindful employees, especially by working on specific strategies, such as positive reappraisal, which may be a promising empirical-based strategy to enhance well-being. Originality/value This study adds knowledge about how mindfulness can contribute to well-being and contributes to expanding the mindfulness-to-meaning theory by adding positive affective experiences as an additional mechanism in the relationship between mindfulness and well-being. Specifically, it demonstrates that the practice of mindfulness helps managers to positively reappraise their surroundings, which results in more frequent experiences of positive affect.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Gender-inclusive language in midwifery and perinatal services: A guide and argument for justice

    Get PDF
Effective communication in relation to pregnancy and birth is crucial to quality care. A recent focus in reproductive healthcare on “sexed language” reflects an ideology of unchangeable sex binary and fear of erasure, from both cisgender women and the profession of midwifery. In this paper, we highlight how privileging sexed language causes harm to all who birth—including pregnant trans, gender diverse, and non-binary people—and is, therefore, unethical and incompatible with the principles of midwifery. We show how this argument, which conflates midwifery with essentialist thinking, is unstable, and perpetuates and misappropriates midwifery's marginalized status. We also explore how sex and gender essentialism can be understood as colonialist, heteropatriarchal, and universalist, and therefore, reinforcing of these harmful principles. Midwifery has both the opportunity and duty to uphold reproductive justice. Midwifery can be a leader in the decolonization of childbirth and in defending the rights of all childbearing people, the majority of whom are cisgender women. As the systemwide use of inclusive language is central to this commitment, we offer guidance in relation to how inclusive language in perinatal and midwifery services may be realized.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

How can we help? A training needs assessment for non-health professionals and volunteers working with asylum seekers and refugees

    Get PDF
Aim To understand the perceptions of volunteers and non-health professionals who worked, work, or will work with refugees and asylum seekers, about their training needs and to know if these perceptions are influenced by the training and/or experience background. Subject and methods A cross-sectional study was conducted. Ninety-one worldwide participants completed the online survey. The survey consisted of a sociodemographic questionnaire collecting data on previous working and training experience, and four experimental questionnaires assessing organizational management-, cultural abilities-, health-, and communication-related needs. Results Approximately 80% of participants had previous working experience with asylum seekers and refugees, although only 48% had some kind of training in this area. The training received was quite diversified in terms of format and content. Of the total sample, 74% agreed that volunteers should undergo training to enhance their ability to assist vulnerable populations and cope with stressful situations. All the participants, regardless of training background or working experience with asylum seekers and refugees, considered it important that training programs included content related to organizational management, cultural, communication, and health. Conclusion Non-health professionals and volunteers receive limited training and possess no disciplinary knowledge to perform their work, even though it has a huge social impact. It is crucial to develop more inclusive programs, capable of being used and adapted to different contexts where people are working with asylum seekers and refugees. Future studies could explore the effectiveness of innovative training methods and compare the training needs between non-health and health professionals.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Exploring the importance of innovation ambidexterity on performance: Insights from NCA and IPMA analysis

    Get PDF
Purpose – Agribusiness shows a growing degree of competitiveness and innovation. However, the organizational mechanisms that compete for innovation and organizational performance are not sufficiently studied. Thus, this study aims to analyze the influence of market orientation and organizational structure on innovation generated and its influence on market and financial performance in agribusiness firms in Extremadura (Spain). Design/methodology/approach – A conceptual model was designed and tested. Data were collected from a questionnaire sent to innovative agri-food companies. The analysis of the model methodologically combines Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM), Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA), and Importance-Performance Map Analysis (IPMA). Findings –The main results reveal that low levels of innovation ambidexterity impact significantly performance but when compared to exploitative innovation, explorative innovation shows a stronger influence on the market and financial performance. Practical implications –The results are intended to be useful to managers to improve their innovative performance by incorporating new strategies in the market orientation and organizational structure. Originality/value – The originality of this research lies in the novelty of the proposed mediators, as well as the sector under study. The study expands the knowledge of the influence that market orientation and organizational structure have on the types of innovation (exploitative/explorative).info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Virtuous leadership and employees’ attitudes and work behaviors

    Get PDF
This study examined virtuous leadership’s effect on employees’ attitudes and work behaviors, more specifically, their affective commitment, turnover intention, and individual performance. The analyses also focused on affective commitment’s mediating role in therelationships between virtuous leadership and both turnover intention and individual performance. The sample consisted of 280 workers from diverse business sectors, who voluntarily filled out an electronic survey. The results suggest that, first, workers’ perception of virtuous leadership significantly is correlated with their levels of affective commitment, turnover intention, and individual performance. Second, affective commitment is linked to turnover intention and individual performance, and, third, the relationship between virtuous leadership and turnover intention is partially mediated by affective commitment. Last, the relationship between workers’ perception of virtuous leadership and their individual performance is fully mediated by affective commitment. The findings suggest that virtuous leaders can generate an emotionally committed workforce that is motivated to stay in the same organization and strive to achieve higher levels of individual performance—if supervisors exhibit significant virtues in the workplace.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

‘Meating’ the animal and moral emotions: Exploring animal caring and cruelty appeals for dietary change

    Get PDF
In modern Western societies, consumers are often disconnected from the animal origins of meat, which facilitates meat consumption by reducing empathy towards animals, and feelings of disgust and guilt. Conversely, animal advocates may appeal to meat’s animal origins to evoke moral emotions that discourage meat consumption. This preregistered study investigated the effectiveness of such meat-animal reminders among 421 meat-eating participants from the UK, recruited via Prolific. Participants were randomly exposed to one of three images: a pork chop without animal reminder (control condition), a pork chop paired with a human petting a pig (animal caring appeal) or paired with a human stunning a pig before slaughter (animal cruelty appeal). Based on harm-based accounts of moral judgment, we measured moral emotions oriented to the pig victim (e.g., empathy, sadness), the human perpetrator (e.g., anger, disgust) and the self (e.g., guilt, shame), and examined their effects on participants’ willingness to change pork chop consumption and tendency to justify pork-eating. ANOVA analysis revealed that both animal appeals (vs. control) increased moral emotions, while mediation analyses indicated that these emotions indirectly decreased pork-eating justification and increased willingness for dietary change. The animal cruelty appeal seemed particularly effective by evoking perpetrator- and victim-oriented emotions. However, we also found evidence of counteractive effects on pork-eating justification and willingness for dietary change once moral emotions were controlled for, suggesting moral disengagement. Hedonic motivations to eat meat remain a significant barrier. Future research should further explore interventions that enable consumers to translate moral concerns into lasting dietary change.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Exploring the green audience : Behavioral determinants of sustainable live music event participation

    Get PDF
As sustainability gains prominence across industries, live music events are increasingly adopting environmentally and socially responsible practices. This study investigates the key behavioral determinants influencing consumer intention to attend sustainable live music events, using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) as its foundational model. This research extends the TPB by incorporating two new variables- Environmentalism and Willingness to Pay. A mixed method approach was employed combining quantitative data (N= 338) analyzed through PLS-SEM and qualitative data from structured interviews (N=20), for further insights. Findings confirm that attitude towards behavior, subjective norms and environmentalism significantly increase the intention to attend sustainable music events, while Perceived Behavioral Control plays a minor role. Moreover, willingness to pay acted as a significant barrier, reinforcing the attitude-behavioral gap in sustainable consumption. Qualitative findings highlighted the role of artist advocacy and social norms in shaping the attendees’ perceptions and further behaviors. This study provides theoretical contributions by extending the TPB to the sustainable live music events field and offers practical implications and further recommendations to event’s organizers, emphasizing the need for effective communication, artist engagement and pricing strategies to enhance attendance at sustainable live music events

BIM-based life cycle assessment: A systematic review on automation and decision-making during design

    Get PDF
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is essential to achieve a Net-Zero Carbon Built Environment and inform effective mitigation strategies for environmental impacts throughout a building's life cycle. However, collecting Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) data and the Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) processes are complex and time-consuming. BIM-LCA integration enables automated quantity-take-off, supporting faster evaluation of different design options and decision-making. Consequently, research on BIM-LCA has grown significantly since 2013. However, previous literature reviews on BIM-LCA do not cover developments from the past three years, nor do they assess how BIM-LCA supports decision-making or how decision-making methods can enhance its adoption and use, particularly among non-LCA experts. A systematic literature review was conducted following the PRISMA protocol to address this gap. A total of 115 research articles (2019–2024) were analysed according to design phases, BIM object LOD, LCA application, data exchange and extraction methods, automation degree, and decision-making features, covering Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis, Multi-Objective Optimisation, and Sensitivity/Uncertainty analyses. The findings highlight advancements in LCI automation. However, several challenges remain, including manual BIM-LCA data mapping during LCIA and limited research on: BIM-LCA for renovation projects, dynamic data exchange for OpenBIM, standardised LOD for different LCA applications, and local databases for budget-based targets. Furthermore, few studies integrate LCA with economic and social indicators, and decision-making methods are mainly absent from BIM-LCA tools. This study outlines research directions to address these limitations and improve BIM-LCA automation and decision-making. Future efforts will focus on gathering insights from industry stakeholders to establish priorities for user-centred BIM-LCA development.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Issues of identity and emotions in the hybridization of NHS hospitals: The role of activity-based costing as a strategy

    No full text
Public hospitals are becoming increasingly hybrid in their institutional logics in response to changing strategies. We conducted a longitudinal, in-depth case study involving five public hospitals, the Portuguese Ministry of Health, and its agencies to examine the role of activity-based costing (ABC) in the hybridization of the sector. Theoretically, we drew on Thornton et al.’s metatheoretical framework, as well as literature on identity and emotions, to inform the study. In doing so, we recognize that constructing a new hybrid institutional logic within a field is a complex endeavor that spans multiple levels of analysis and that actors at the intraorganizational level play a central role in shaping institutional processes. Our findings highlight the role of clinicians’ emotions and identity change in the construction of a new hybrid logic at the microlevel. We found that conflicts of identity and negative emotions triggered by the implementation of ABC—such as distrust, fear, and anxiety—hindered the development of hybridization at higher institutional levels. We conclude that only through positive emotional processes can a new hybrid logic gradually develop at the microlevel and accrete at the field level.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
