Sustainable horizons: Navigating ESG reporting challenges in the hospitality and tourism industry

    Get PDF
A review of ESG reports shows that hospitality companies often take an external, fragmented approach to ESG reporting, failing to consider the sector’s diverse stakeholder groups and unique operational challenges. A more cohesive, theoretical foundation to guide the reporting of ESG activities in the sector is necessary. Integrating stakeholder salience theory and sustainability materiality framework, the study examined the current ESG issues reported by firms in the hospitality industry, to offer preliminary directions for ESG reporting based on material ESG issues per subsector. Based on a sequential mixed-methods design, we analyzed 140 ESG reports, and followed up with a-typical structured interviews with ESG experts. We find that ESG firms across subsectors predominantly report on legislation, regulations, and salaries, with limited emphasis on stakeholder engagement. We extend the literature by including key informants’ views on effective communication of ESG, highlighting challenges, and offering recommendations to improve ESG disclosure across the industry.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Mobility against all odds: The experiences of Chinese international students in Portugal amid the COVID-19 pandemic

    Get PDF
The COVID-19 pandemic significantly affected international student mobility. Chinese international students had to deal not only with challenges such as border closures and lockdowns but also with discrimination and stigmatisation. In this paper, we examine the decisions of Chinese students to engage in international mobility and their experiences in Portugal during the pandemic, relying on 23 in-depth interviews with Chinese international students living in Portugal during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic (2020–2021). Our findings indicate that, although these students were concerned about the COVID-19 pandemic and its risks, they tended to prioritise their academic endeavours, while their mobility plans did not appear to have been significantly affected by the pandemic. These findings provide new insights into how international students structure their mobility plans and make sense of their experiences of studying abroad during “unsettling events”.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Planning (in) the next century? On the futures of planning that are already here

    Get PDF
What if the problem with planning was its very relation with normativity and future? In this article, we challenge the idea that “the future that we want” can be designed in the sense that planning has historically done—by imagining a future that should be sought by action in the present. In so doing, we explore the possibility of planning as a strategy to release the futurial, excessive presences that already exist in the present, through Stefano Harney and Fred Moten's notion of “fugitive planning,” and Giorgio Agamben's idea of “destituent power.”info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The politics of pro-outsider labour market reforms: A configurational study

    Get PDF
Over the past decades, the level of regulation of fixed-term contracts has been in flux. Many reforms deregulating these contracts were followed by a regulatory countertrend, a puzzling finding considering influential theoretical expectations like the ones developed by the dualization and liberalization literatures. This paper draws on the comparative employment relations and comparative political economy literatures to identify the drivers of pro-outsider reforms. Furthermore, it develops an innovative argument claiming that governments may rely on support from a ‘domestic coalition’ including workers in permanent contracts, or they can leverage the European link to support their intention of conducting a pro-outsider reform. Each of these paths relies on the assemblage of distinct pro-reform coalitions of policy actors. To test our argument, the paper uses fsQCA. We compare 38 reforms enacted in 16 European countries between 1985–2019. After the fsQCA analysis, we conduct a qualitative discussion of the different paths.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Impact of non-R&D factors on China's pharmaceutical company performance

    No full text
China’s pharmaceutical companies have achieved significantly better company performance through relatively less research and development (R&D) investment, than international pharmaceutical juggernauts during the same period. This study aims at understanding the reasons for this phenomenon. First, this study adopts a multiple case study by interviewing the employees of three representative pharmaceutical companies in China. Six core categories affecting the performance of China’s pharmaceutical companies are identified through multi-level data coding. Then, according to the core categories identified from the multiple case study, we define four company internal factors, namely, leadership, operational capability, reputation, and compliance response, as independent variables, being company performance the dependent variable, and two external factors, characteristics of industry and competitive landscape, as moderators. Accordingly, a theoretical model is constructed and theoretical hypotheses are raised. Finally, with a focus on the pharmaceutical industry, questionnaires are distributed, and SmartPLS is used to statistically analyze the acquired data. The main conclusions of this study are as follows: 1) Six core factors related to company performance are identified: leadership, operational capability, reputation, compliance response, characteristics of industry and competitive landscape; 2) four company internal factors, including leadership, operational capability, reputation, and compliance response, as independent variables, are positively associated with the dependent variable, company performance; 3) the two moderators, characteristics of industry and competitive landscape, increase the relationship between operational capability and company performance; 4) characteristics of industry and competitive landscape, as moderators, weaken the relationship between leadership and company performance. This study enriches the current body of knowledge related to performance theories and provides theoretical support for effectively explaining the special phenomenon observed in China's pharmaceutical industry.

Identifying Social factors that Stratify Health Opportunities and Outcomes (ISSHOOs) in pain research: Consensus recommendations for the collection and reporting of equity-relevant data

    No full text
Background The aspiration to improve health equity is fundamental to scholarly focus and action in public health, and highly relevant to addressing the global burden of pain–the leading contributor to disability worldwide. There is potential for advancement towards health equity to be facilitated by greater access to data that identifies the role of socio-demographic factors in pain and health outcomes. Methods The ‘Identifying Social factors that Stratify Health Opportunities and Outcomes (ISSHOOs) in Pain Research’ project was a multi-stage process that aimed to reach consensus on the most important equity-relevant items to include in all human adult pain research. Conducted April 2022–May 2025, it incorporated two scoping reviews (published 2023), an international Delphi study (published 2025), consensus meetings and focus groups; prioritising global participation, patient perspectives, and interdisciplinary expertise throughout. Findings Three hundred and four individuals from 45 countries, across six continents, contributed to developing two sets of items. Set A, the ‘minimum dataset’, is a globally relevant set of eight standardised socio-demographic items (age, sex, gender identity, place, race/ethnicity/cultural identity, education, financial position, work status), accompanied by concise guidance to assist implementation and setting-specific tailoring; Set B is an ‘extended dataset’ of optional items from which researchers can select items consistent with their study population and research questions. The ISSHOOs recommendations offer a culturally sensitive, cross-culturally relevant, practical and highly useful resource. Interpretation Routine adoption and clear reporting of the ISSHOOs datasets across all human adult pain research will lead to improved and harmonious descriptions of research participants across health equity domains. Our goal is to promote equity-relevant awareness and understanding, and ultimately drive progress towards reducing avoidable disparities in health for people with pain, with potential for broader application to other fields of health.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
