Spaced learning nella scuola primaria. Sperimentazione didattica tra competenze di base, attività motorie, inclusione
Lo scopo di questo capitolo è discutere, attraverso l’esplicitazione dei risultati ottenuti dalla ricerca nelle classi coinvolte sul territorio palermitano per il progetto formativo AMIS, l’efficacia del metodo Spaced Learning sull’apprendimento matematico di base in alunni di scuola primaria.
Lo Spaced Learning, come già ribadito nei capitoli precedenti, è una metodologia didattica basata su principi neuroscientifici e psicopedagogici, che sfrutta il potere della ripetizione intervallata per consolidare la memoria e migliorare l’apprendimento a lungo termine. È stato sviluppato a partire dalle ricerche sulle modalità con cui il cervello umano codifica e recupera le informazioni.
Gli assunti torico/metodologici dello Spaced Learning (o apprendimento intervallato) fanno riferimento ad una particolare articolazione del tempo che prevede, per ogni singola lezione in classe, tre momenti di input e due intervalli. Si tratta di un metodo che permette di massimizzare la concen- trazione e il lavoro cognitivo degli alunni, focalizzando l’attenzione su un particolare argomento che viene affrontato da punti di vista diversi e con modalità diversificate.
L’approccio Spaced Learning richiede, ovviamente, una formazione spe- cifica da parte dei docenti e una certa esperienza per svolgere tutte le fasi previste dal metodo stesso nei modi e nei tempi adeguati. Infatti, lo schema di implementazione deve essere preciso, accurato e studiato preventivamente in modo che vengano rispettati tempi e contenuti, scelti ad hoc, al fine di fa- vorire una reale memorizzazione e interiorizzazione da parte dell’alunno di quanto appreso. Secondo questa teoria, la memoria può essere paragonata a un percorso strutturato della mente che deve essere ripercorso più volte per essere fissato nella mente in modo indelebile.
Il contributo discute gli esiti rilevati nelle classi terze, quarte e quinte di scuola primaria partecipanti all’indagine, attraverso la quale ci si è proposti di promuovere, verificare e analizzare l’uso sperimentale dello Spaced Learning per migliorare nei bambini l’apprendimento matematico di base
Optimal transport-based displacement interpolation with data augmentation for reduced order modeling of nonlinear dynamical systems
We present a novel reduced-order Model (ROM) that leverages optimal transport (OT) theory and displacement interpolation to enhance the representation of nonlinear dynamics in complex systems. While traditional ROM techniques face challenges in this scenario, especially when data (i.e., observational snapshots) are limited, our method addresses these issues by introducing a data augmentation strategy based on OT principles. The proposed framework generates interpolated solutions tracing geodesic paths in the space of probability distributions, enriching the training dataset for the ROM. A key feature of our approach is its ability to provide a continuous representation of the solution's dynamics by exploiting a virtual-to-real time mapping. This enables the reconstruction of solutions at finer temporal scales than those provided by the original data. To further improve prediction accuracy, we employ Gaussian Process Regression to learn the residual and correct the representation between the interpolated snapshots and the physical solution.
We demonstrate the effectiveness of our methodology with atmospheric mesoscale benchmarks characterized by highly nonlinear, advection-dominated dynamics. Our results show improved accuracy and efficiency in predicting complex system behaviors, indicating the potential of this approach for a wide range of applications in computational physics and engineering

Integrated Hydrological Modeling and Analysis Tool for Automatic Derivation of Design Floods in Sicilian Watersheds
This work presents a tool that enhances the hydrological flood modeling process at the event scale by integrating
geospatial analysis capabilities, hydrological algorithms, and data. The main purpose is to overcome some of the
main simplifications made in many modeling flood hydrographs, contributing to better simulate peak flow hydrographs
for fixed return period (i.e., design flood). By leveraging geospatial analysis capabilities within a GIS
framework, the tool uses spatially distributed data for a more accurate representation of basin characteristics and
processes. This is particularly valuable for deriving probabilistic flood hydrographs, whose accurate predictions
are essential for risk assessment and management, making the tool a valuable support in decision-making for hydrological
agencies and practitioners. The tool has been tested on Sicilian catchments but given its open-source
nature, modular, and flexible design, it is adaptable to different input data and geographic areas, proving a
promising step forward in hydrological flood modeling
La terra e il mare. Signori, feudi e porti nel Mezzogiorno medievale e moderno
Nell’Italia meridionale e insulare la terra e il mare mantennero sempre uno stretto rapporto e rimasero inscindibili. I grandi feudatari comandavano flotte, in qualità di ammiragli, guidavano spedizioni marittime e battaglie navali, non disdegnavano la pirateria, costruivano navi e controllavano le esportazioni frumentarie attraverso i caricatori. La rete di piccoli approdi dislocati lungo le coste consentiva ai feudatari, laici ed ecclesiastici, di superare gli ostacoli frapposti da una viabilità inadeguata, trasportando i prodotti agricoli tramite la navigazione di cabotaggio per venderli sul mercato locale. Dai porti più grandi, in grado di ospitare imbarcazioni di maggiori dimensioni, partivano, invece, le merci destinate al commercio nel mar Mediterraneo, fra le quali si annoveravano, oltre al frumento, il vino greco dell’area vesuviana e il tonno siciliano, prodotti rinomati e richiesti a livello internazionale. Advancing Space Charge Test Techniques: Pulsed Electro-Acoustic Measurement on a 525-kV HVDC Cable
In 2017, the IEEE Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation Technical Committee HVDC Cable Systems introduced a procedure to assess the effect of space charge accumulation in extruded high-voltage DC (HVDC) cables with rated voltages up to 550 kV, which is known as IEEE Standard 1732. In this article, we present the results of a pulsed electro-acoustic (PEA) measurement, which has been carried out in compliance with the IEEE guidelines, for the first time on a full-size cable with a rated voltage, U0, of 525 kV and with more than 100 m in length. The aim is to evaluate the maximum absolute percent variation of the electric field profile, ΔEmax, to determine after how long it takes to stabilize (variation less than 10%). Compliance with this condition is checked at three-hour intervals. Results include both positive (+U0) and negative (−U0) volt-on tests, each followed by a volt-off test. The findings reveal a significant reversal of the electric field profile during the positive and negative volt-on tests, with electric field stabilization reached after a total duration of nine and six hours, respectively. Notably, the reversal of the field is concentrated within the first hour. However, evaluating the ΔEmax at three-hour intervals leads to extending the test duration to a minimum of six hours. Furthermore, the evaluation of ΔEmax based on the profiles acquired at the beginning and end of the interval could make the results overly sensitive to external disturbances. This study demonstrates the reproducibility of the PEA measurement on full-size cables longer than 100 m and the applicability of IEEE Standard 1732

Alla base di un simile antefatto è possibile scorgere, sotto svariati profili, il mitologema edipico. In particolare, nell’epilogo dell’arringa, affiora la traccia senecana, attraverso una serie di allusioni intertestuali alla minacciosa atmosfera del prologo dell’Oedipus di Seneca. Il contributo intende evidenziare questi consapevoli richiami tragici e decifrarne il ruolo che acquisiscono nel dialogare con un prodotto di scuola capace di presentare al pubblico romano una molteplicità di importanti questioni etiche, politiche e religiose.Afflicted by a plague, a civitas decides to consult the oracle. Three Burial Vaults in Sicily
Within the framework of a deeply rooted cult of the deceased in Sicilian culture and an architectural tradition dating back to the early 20th century, three small structures were built in the cemetery of a small town in the province of Trapani. Conceived and executed in consecutive moments, the three works share the use of the same construction technique and can be interpreted as three spatial ideas for a single theme. The projects aim to develop a coherent architectural language, based on light and void, while simultaneously exploring the plastic potential of concrete to shape the essential space of memory. In this way, the structural, functional, and formal components converge, resulting in an architecture that could ideally dispense with any additional finishes.En el marco de un culto a los difuntos profundamente arraigado en la cultura siciliana y de una tradición arquitectónica que se remonta a principios del siglo XX, tres pequeñas arquitecturas se construyen en el cementerio de un pequeño pueblo de la provincia de Trapani. Pensadas y realizadas en momentos consecutivos, las tres obras comparten el empleo de la misma técnica constructiva y pueden interpretarse como tres ideas de espacio para un único tema. Los proyectos buscan desarrollar un lenguaje arquitectónico coherente, basado en la luz y en el hueco, explorando al mismo tiempo las potencialidades plásticas del hormigón para componer el espacio esencial de la memoria. De esta manera, se produce la coincidencia de la componente estructural, funcional y formal, para una arquitectura que idelamente podría prescindir de cualquier otro acabado
A Comparative Analysis of Meta-heuristic Algorithms for Finite Element Optimization
In the field of structural engineering, the optimization process is crucial for ensuring both the efficiency and safety of designed structures. The persistent search for solutions that maximize structural performance while minimizing costs presents a fascinating and complex challenge. In this context, this paper aims to analyze and compare three different Nature-inspired optimization algorithms that are derived from theory of biological evolution, swarm intelligence, and chemical and physical processes. Specifically, the study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the performance and characteristics of Genetic Algorithms, the Firefly Algorithm, and the Group Search Optimizer Algorithm in the context of struc-tural optimization within the ANSYS APDL environment. The results obtained from each meta-heuristic algorithm will be discussed and compared in terms of their convergence, efficiency, and capability to find optimal and/or approximate solutions
Determination of phenolic content, antioxidant activity, and brine shrimp toxicity of the aerial part extracts from Sinapis alba and Sinapis arvensis (Brassicaceae) growing wild in Sicily (Italy).
As part of a project aimed at the valorization of taxa included in the Brassicaceae family belonging to the spontaneous flora of Sicily, our research team has recently focused on studying the taxa of Sinapis L., utilized as food plants and in traditional medicine as sources of bioactive compounds with application in pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and cosmetic fields. In Italy, the genus is represented by Sinapis arvensis L., S. pubescens L., and S. alba L., the latter consisting of three infra-specific subdivisions namely subsp. alba, subsp. dissecta (Lag.) Bonnier, subsp. mairei (H.Lindb.) Maire. All these specific and intraspecific taxa are present in Sicily.
Particularly, current research is focused on the aerial parts (leaves, flowers, and stems) of Sinapis alba (white mustard) and Sinapis arvensis (wild mustard).
The total phenolic and flavonoid content of the 70% methanol extracts from the aerial parts of the selected species has been spectrophotometrically quantified. Moreover, the antioxidant properties were determined by in vitro methods based on different mechanisms: the primary antioxidant activity was evaluated by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and reducing power assays, while the ferrous ion chelating activity assay estimated the secondary antioxidant properties. Finally, Artemia salina lethality bioassay was performed for the preliminary toxicity assessment.
The total phenolic content was found to be higher in S. alba leaf, flower, and stem extracts (68.53 ± 2.57, 69.33 ± 1.83 and 47.01 ± 1.56 mg GAE/g extract, respectively) than those of S. arvensis. The same trend was also observed for the flavonoid content (32.94 ± 0.91, 29.93 ± 0.67 and 17.36 ± 0.41 mg QE/g extract, respectively).
Concerning the antioxidant properties, all the extracts of the two species showed mild to moderate DPPH radical scavenging activity compared to the standard butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT); among the extracts, S. alba flower extract displayed the best activity, reaching 95% inhibition at the highest concentration tested (IC50
reducing power assay, both species showed mild to moderate reducing power, compared to the standard BHT being S. alba extracts more active than those from S. arvensis. In the ferrous ion chelating activity assay, S. arvensis extracts displayed good secondary antioxidant properties, higher than those from S. alba, with flower extract being the most active (IC50 = 0.15 ± 0.09 mg/mL) followed by stem and leaf extracts (IC50 = 0.22 ± 0.005 and 0.37 ± 0.08 mg/mL, respectively).
The results of the antioxidant tests indicate that the extracts of the two Sinapis taxa possess antioxidant properties based on different mechanisms: the best primary antioxidant activity was observed for S. alba extracts, whereas those from S. arvensis displayed better secondary antioxidant properties.
At last, the results of A. salina lethality bioassay showed the absence of toxicity against brine shrimp larvae for all the extracts.
Overall, the obtained results improve the knowledge of the Sinapis taxa, also indicating S. alba and S. arvensis, belonging to the spontaneous flora of Sicily, as safe sources of antioxidant compounds
